Winds continue to gradually ease this afternoon and accordingly

Forecast Highlights...

* Wind advisory in effect from midnight tonight through noon
  Wednesday generally along and south of the I-80 corridor. Sporadic
  gusts near advisory criteria possible late afternoon/evening.

* Scattered showers develop this afternoon, with a period of more
  widespread rain this evening into the early overnight hours. A few
  rumbles of thunder can't be ruled out especially northwest of the
  I-55 corridor tonight.

* Gusty west winds gradually diminish Wednesday.

* Temperatures remain well-above mid-February normals.

A deep upper level trough/closed low was centered over northeast New
Mexico early this morning. Model guidance remains in excellent
agreement in lifting this feature quickly northeast across the
Plains today, and across the upper Midwest and western Great Lakes
region tonight into early Wednesday. In response, surface trough
currently in the lee of the Rockies is progged to consolidate into a
deep surface low of around 985 mb by this evening across western
Iowa and track across Lake Superior Wednesday morning. Strong
surface pressure falls in advance of this low will quickly tighten
the gradient across our region through this afternoon, making for
increasing south-southeast winds ahead of the low and an approaching
occluding frontal system. Forecast soundings depict low level jet
winds ramping up into the 60-70 kt range across the forecast area
late this afternoon and evening, though relatively stable low levels
ahead of the warm front appear likely to limit mixing into these
stronger winds late this afternoon and evening and lend somewhat low
confidence to widespread wind advisory criteria during that time.
While sporadic gusts 40-45 mph are certainly possible, deepening of
the mixed layer behind the occluded frontal passage later tonight
into Wednesday morning support a higher confidence in more
solid/widespread advisory criteria (sustained 30 mph and/or gusts 45
mph or higher) winds from around midnight tonight into Wednesday
morning before winds gradually diminish later in the day. Thus have
elected to hoist a wind advisory for the south half of the forecast
area during this period, though will issue an SPS highlighting the
potential for some sporadic higher gusts prior to the start of
the advisory this evening.

Aside from the winds, a band of elevated rain showers is expected to
develop into the cwa from the west this afternoon, though coverage
may initially be limited until this evening when stronger forcing
and deeper saturation arrive. However, strong vorticity advection
ahead of the negatively-tilted mid-level wave, strong upper level
divergence in the left exit region of the upper level jet steak, and
strong isentropic upglide within a narrow axis of nearly 1.00 inch p-
wats should result in a decent period of widespread shower/rain
coverage toward/during early evening. Some embedded thunder also
appears possible this evening, as forecast soundings depict some
modest elevated MUCAPE of 100+ J/kg within a region of steeper mid-
level lapse rates immediately ahead of the mid-level vort and
impinging dry slot. This looks most likely northwest of the I-55
corridor across northern IL from mid-evening through about midnight
or a little after. Showers should then end from southwest to
northeast after midnight, as the dry slot spreads in aloft and the
mid-level wave lifts northeast of the area.

Unseasonably mild mid-February weather persists through the period.
Highs today are expected to be in the low-mid 50s area wide despite
increasing cloud cover and southeast winds, though the onshore
component of those winds will keep the immediate Illinois lake shore
in the 40s. Lows tonight will remain in the 40s for most areas, and
there will be a larger gradient in temperatures Wednesday as the
cold front trailing the low edges across part of the area. Highs
Wednesday should range from the mid-upper 40s northwest with more
cloud cover, to the mid-upper 50s far southeast where more sun is
likely.

.LONG TERM...

Wednesday through Monday...

The main weather highlights during the period are:

* Increasing threat for a wintry mix Thursday, with some
  accumulating snow possible over parts of northwestern into far
  northeastern IL.

* Shower and storm threat continues in IN on Thursday, but much
  of this threat looks to be just to the east-southeast of our
  area.

* Turning sharply colder Friday, but then warming up again into
  next weekend.

The next storm system we are watching is currently anticipated to
track northeastward from the southern Plains into the Great Lakes
region Wednesday night through Thursday. Model and ensemble
guidance favor a surface low track northeastward from the Ozarks
Wednesday evening, into northern sections of IN later in the day
Thursday. While this is the case, ensemble members do continue to
depict a fair amount of spread with the systems timing into
Thursday, which makes some of the finner scale details of the
weather forecast into Thursday a bit unclear at this time.
However, the continued support for a track southeast of much of
far northern IL does support the idea that accumulating wintry
precipitation may impact at least far northern/northwestern parts
of the area Thursday.

Showers and thunderstorms (some possible strong) are likely to
occur Wednesday night into Thursday in association with the storm
systems warm conveyor belt. However, much of this activity may
largely miss our area to the east and southeast. Nevertheless, I
did hang onto some mention of thunder in the forecast over my far
southeastern counties Thursday morning in closer proximity to the
likely track of the surface low.

Farther to the northwest, a southwest to northeastward oriented
baroclinic zone is expected to set up over far northwestern IL and
adjacent areas of southern WI and eastern IA Wednesday into
Wednesday night following the departure of the potent storm system
tracking across the Upper Midwest Tuesday night. This baroclinic
zone is likely to foster a band of moderate to possibly heavy band
of accumulating snow late Wednesday night into Thursday as
strengthening mid-level deformation along the systems
northwestern periphery induces a rather healthy band of
frontogenesis beneath the entrance region of an upper jet.
Questions still remain on which exact areas this band of
accumulating snow will occur, but current indications would
support this roughly along and southwest to northeastern corridor
from northern MO and southern and eastern IA through far northern
parts of IL (north of I-88) into WI. There is also a threat of a
light wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet just south of the
heavier band of snow, and this wintry mix could fall across parts
of the I-80 and I-88 corridors (including parts of the Chicago
metro area) Thursday morning. Overall, this system does not look
to be a major snow or ice maker for the area, but with the
potential for a few inches of snow to fall(along with some minor
icing) it appears that there will be some impacts to travel, at
least for northern parts of IL. This looks to especially be the
case as surface temperatures remain below freezing during the day.

Colder air will briefly make a return on Friday as the
aforementioned baroclinic zone shifts southeastward across the
area, making way for a colder air mass to spill in as high
pressure builds across the region. This will be short lived,
however, as southerly to southwesterly flow develops Friday night
into Saturday on the backside of the surface high. This will set
up a quick warm-up for the weekend. Ensemble guidance then
suggests that our next chance for precipitation will come sometime
during the early to mid-week time frame. The NBM came in with
some broad- brushed slight chance and chance PoPs for Sunday night
into Monday, which seems okay for now, though with still a
considerable amount of spread in the available forecast guidance
at this vantage point, it appears possible that this next shot for
precipitation may come just beyond the end of the current
forecast period.

Forecast concerns for the terminals...
*Breezy southeasterly winds developing Tuesday morning with gusts
 around 30 kts during the afternoon and evening

*LLWS threat Tuesday night if gusts don't materialize

*Rain moves overhead Tuesday evening with pockets of heavier
 showers late evening

*MVFR ceilings move in with the rain and linger through the period

Light southerly winds and mostly clear skies will persist through
the rest of the overnight as the surface high to our south
continues to move away. As it does a developing low pressure
system will begin to move into the area Tuesday morning which will
turn winds southeasterly and increase their speed with gusts
around 30 kts Tuesday afternoon and evening. Stronger gusts in
excess of 30 kts are starting to look more likely in the wake of
the low late Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning. However,
there continues to be some uncertainty in how well the atmosphere
would be able to mix during this period which will determine how
high the gusts will reach. If mixing doesn't materialize as
guidance suggests, the stout 60 kt low-level jet will create a
threat for low-level wind shear for a period. At this time I have
forgone a formal LLWS mention in the TAFs in favor of the gustier
winds, but this trend will have to be monitored going forward.

Additionally, the low will also bring widespread light to
moderate rainfall to the area late Tuesday afternoon through late
evening. Guidance has continued to show that the initial wave of
rain Tuesday afternoon would be in the form of light showers
and/or sprinkles due to the dry low-levels with the more robust
rain moving in after 00z Wednesday. Most of the rain Tuesday
evening is expected to be of a light to moderate intensity, but a
brief period of heavier showers is starting to look more likely
late Tuesday evening as instability increases under the upper low.
While there is still a bit of uncertainty in exactly where the
more convective rates would establish I did add a PROB30 to the
Chicago terminals to account for this potential. There also
continues to be a non- zero chance for a rumble of thunder or two
during this period of heavier showers, but confidence is still too
low for a formal mention at this time.

Lastly, VFR cloud cover will increase through the day on Tuesday
ahead of the rain before ceilings lower with the rain. Guidance
continues to favor MVFR ceilings developing and persisting
through the remainder of the forecast period. The signal for high-
end IFR ceilings has started to diminish, but still cannot be
completely ruled out especially under the heavier rain Tuesday
evening.

A period of gale force winds is expected across southern Lake
Michigan from this early this evening through Wednesday morning.
Winds will initially be from the south-southeast, shifting
southwest overnight and then west on Wednesday. Winds will
diminish fairly quickly Wednesday afternoon, as strong low
pressure lifts away from the region to the northeast.

The gale watch previously in effect for the Illinois and Indiana
nearshore waters has been upgraded to a gale warning, from 6 pm
through noon Wednesday. A small craft advisory is in effect at
noon, preceding the gale warning.

DISCUSSION:

Two storm systems will move through the region this week. The
first will bring a period of rain and strong wind gusts of 35 to
40 mph Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

The second system is likely to produce a wintry mix across parts of
northern Illinois late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning,
before changing over to mainly snow prior to ending late Thursday.
Some snow accumulation appears possible, especially along and north
of the I-88 corridor across far northern Illinois. Farther southeast,
there is a chance of thunderstorms Thursday mainly southeast of the
I-57 corridor across eastern Illinois and northwest Indiana.
