Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 430 AM PDT Sat Aug 19 2023 .SYNOPSIS...SHower and thunderstorm activity increases today compared to yesterday, but Sunday and Monday see widespread showers and some thunderstorms as Hilary tracks closer to the Southwest U.S. Temperatures trend notably cooler between today and tomorrow. && .SHORT TERM...Today through very early Monday The low pressure system that has been sitting off of the western coast of California continues to push moisture into the region, but Hurricane Hilary's northward movement will lead to even more moisture. Showers and some thunderstorms move in to central Nevada during the morning hours, pushing northward during the afternoon. Highest QPF totals for today will mostly come out of areas south of the U.S. 50 corridor, ranging from about 0.10" to 0.50". North of the corridor, widespread totals of a few hundredths of an inch up to 0.15". If any isolated, embedded heavier cells form, localized totals may be greater than these ranges. However, that is something that has to be virtually forecast in real-time. Afternoon highs in northern Nevada remain warm in the upper 80s and low 90s, but locations in central Nevada where showers occur stay cooler in the low to mid 80s. Sunday is still expected to be the day with greatest rainfall amounts. Humboldt, Elko, northern Lander & Eureka, and northern White Pine counties are forecast to see a range of 0.20" to approximately one inch of rainfall over the course of the day. Southern Lander & Eureka, and southern White Pine see a range of one inch to 1.5", and greatest totals come out of northern Nye where 1.5" to almost 3" are forecast. The mountains in northern Nye are on track for a range of 3" to 4"+ and widespread flooding is a major concern. If you are in an area that sees flooding when we have the typical summertime thunderstorms, you are almost guaranteed to see flooding to some degree as this is going to be heavy, prolonged rainfall. Canyons that have seen landslides with short-lived heavy rainfall in the past are at risk of seeing these occur with these forecast QPF total, such as Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains. All of this to say, this is a significant and impactful amount of rainfall occurring on Sunday, and should not be taken lightly. Once it starts raining, any breaks in the rain will be short lived and won't offer much flooding mitigation where flooding occurs. Be sure to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Temperatures will also be significant cooler compared to Saturday, with highs in the 60s and low 70s. .LONG TERM...Monday into next Friday The main story continues to be the remnants of a major tropical storm that is forecast to move northward and into portions of southern and western Nevada. For the forecast area, this is an anonymously wet tropical system. This system could very well produce rainfall amounts that may exceed all time daily records. The heaviest rainfall is expected to occur over central Nevada throughout Monday, but the northern sections of the state will not be immune to seeing above average rainfall. As a result, all of northern and central Nevada remains under a flood watch through Tuesday morning. Storm total rainfall amounts during this time frame are shaping up to be around 2 to 5 inches with locally higher amounts in central Nevada and 1 to 3 inches with locally higher amounts in northern Nevada. Flooding of low lying and flood prone areas, over roadways, and along rivers, creeks, and streams is highly likely. In addition, some burn scar areas that may not have recovered previously may produce debris flows during this time. Highs will be in the 60s and 70s, while overnight lows will be in the 50s and 60s. Winds will be breezy each afternoon except Monday where sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph are possible and a wind advisory may be required for some portions of the forecast area. Tuesday through Friday, moisture remaining over the forecast area may allow for the development of additional showers and thunderstorms across portions northern and central Nevada. However, rainfall amounts will be less than what Monday brought. Highs will be in the 70s and 80s while lows will be in the 50s. Winds will be breezy each afternoon. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions for all terminals through Saturday morning. Another round of showers and thunderstorms expected along the northern TAF sites after 18Z Saturday. Impacts will include lightning, brief heavy rainfall, and erratic/gusty outflow winds up to 35 knots. && .FIRE WEATHER...Showers and thunderstorms again today with move coverage compared to yesterday. Higher moisture amounts in the atmosphere are starting to build in, so thunderstorms today will be a mix of wet and dry. However, dry thunderstorms will only be isolated in coverage. All zones see showers and thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday, but dry thunderstorms will be very isolated and few in number if any actually happen. && .HYDROLOGY...Deep Tropical moisture moves in from the south, following a northward track. Impacted first are northern Nye and White Pine counties today. Heavy showers and thunderstorms spread northward by tomorrow, bringing impacts to the rest of our counties. The moisture, atmospheric instability, and weak lift associated with the decaying remnants of Hilary has the potential to produce moderate to heavy rainfall and the potential for strong thunderstorms to produce moderate to high rainfall rates from 1 to 2 inches per hour.
