Additional cloud cover expected today across the region as low
level winds continue to advect a very rich airmass over the
region. Aloft, this morning a more zonal or progressive upper
level flow has taken shape with a 590dam H5 trough elongated over
the southern Gulf of Mexico into the SW Atlantic. Over time, this
feature will continue to strengthen and spread eastward toward
Florida later today and tonight. This will transition our upper
flow quickly to a more active southwest flow aloft. With the
heights increasing, surface temperatures will respond similar to
yesterday and despite some cloudiness we should be looking at
temperatures in the upper 70s or lower 80s for Fat Tuesday.
An upper level trough is forecast to move northeast out of
northern Mexico and eventually toward the midwest states late
today and Wednesday. Forecast models continue to show this feature
being pushed more and more north and west away from our region as
the upper high continues to build strength across the Southeast
U.S. This will also limit most if not all rainfall potential with
this feature and surface cold front that tries to sneak into the
Lower Mississippi River Valley...stalling as the parent wave
rockets into Canada by the end of the forecast period.
Looking at the wind potential for Wednesday, as the system
continues to trend even further to the north and west, the strong
LLJ is also retreating a bit. This package we did lower surface
winds just a bit. At 925mb, winds will roughly be around 35 to 40
knots across the far western tier and 30 to 35 knots along and
east of the I55 corridor. Forecast soundings still show plenty of
insolation on Wednesday with super adiabatic lapse rates right off
the deck, which should help for some considerable mixing of these
winds to the surface. At this juncture, winds look to be near Wind
Advisory criteria for Wednesday, especially over the western tier,
however, with models still trending more and more north and west
with the parent system, there appears to be some uncertainty
related to strength of those 925mb winds. Similar to today,
heights continue to gradually increase meaning temperatures should
respond similarly with most locations away from the immediate
coast warming into the 80s...or roughly 10 to 15 degrees above
seasonal averages. (Frye)

We have been looking at very warm and dry conditions for the past
several days and this thinking continues with unseasonable and
possible record temperatures for February on Thursday. The models
continue in agreement through the entire period and the NBM is
giving reasonable outputs. The only change was to add a degree to
NBM daytime highs to account for the warmer than normal
temperatures.
The overall weather pattern for the period does look more like
summer with dominant upper and surface high pressure over the Gulf
driving the warm temperatures and lack of rain. There is a slight
chance for rain over the northern portions of our area on
Thursday, but the next good chance for rain looks to be Tuesday as
an upper low moves across the Great Lakes trailing a fast moving
front that reaches south across the MS River Valley into the Gulf.

Most terminals have cleared out to VFR coverage of shallow cu
after spending much of the morning hours with MVFR CIGS. VFR
conditions with breezy southwest winds at 10-15 knots and gusts
nearing 25 knots will persist through the afternoon hours before
MVFR CIGS return tonight with more stratus developing over the
coastal areas especially. CIGS could approach IFR intermittently,
but winds are expected to remain elevated overnight inhibiting
lower stratus and fog development. Winds will increase out of the
south on Wednesday morning with gusts upwards of 30-35 knots
possible at terminals mainly along and west of I-55 by midday
Wednesday. This will also enhance the potential for some LLWS
along coastal areas by the afternoon, but little impacts are
anticipated at terminals at this time.

Areas of locally dense fog will be possible through the morning
hours as S to SSW surface winds continue to bring in a rich low
level airmass over relatively cool water surface temperatures.
Eventually the fog will at least become less dense by later this
afternoon; however, there remains a weak signal for more fog
overnight tonight, but confidence is much lower than this morning,
especially as low level winds dramatically increase right off the
deck.
Strong southerly flow will develop, especially later this
afternoon and overnight tonight. Added cautionary headlines and
SCAs for the respective time period. Regardless of location, by
Wednesday all local waters will need Small Craft Advisories as
winds and seas build. Going into late this week winds and seas
become more favorable with only light to moderate winds forecast
