Primary change to inherited forecasts this morning was nudging up
temperatures slightly based on latest obs/trends. Took a good look
at winds for the rest of the day and based on latest guidance,
they appeared to be doing fine as is.

Also plan to extend the inherited Dense Fog Advisory on the near
shore waters prior to its 18z expiration, based on latest fog
guidance.

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Thursday night)
Issued at 344 AM CST Tue Feb 21 2023

High pressure at the surface and aloft is centered near South
Florida this morning. Low pressure at the surface is over north
Texas. A moderate south to southwest flow is occurring locally
between systems. The moist air mass being advected in has allowed
sea fog to occur, however winds have been elevated just enough to
mix out fog inland. Winds may decrease just enough toward sunrise
to allow fog to potentially reach the I-10 corridor.

Today will be yet another breezy and warm day. Wind speeds again
will be near wind adv criteria. Enough of a ridge aloft will be be
in place to keep the forecast dry.

Wednesday a disturbance aloft will pass north of the local area
increasing rain chances into the afternoon. Chances will be
highest from the East TX Lakes Region through Cen LA with minimal
chances, if any, along the coast. As low pressure moves across the
central plains the pressure gradient will tighten across the
local region increasing winds. Wind gusts in the 30 to 45 mph are
anticipated.

Thursday will be yet another warm day, however winds will relax. A
weak frontal boundary will drift into the region and stall. A few
showers may occur by Thursday afternoon, but overall coverage
will be minimal.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday through Tuesday)

The longterm period starts off with a large high pressure regime
located over the Straights of Florida which has spread to cover the
entire Gulf of Mexico. An exiting jet max is stretched west to east
across the upper Ohio River Valley, and the next southeast weather
maker in the form of a closed low is coming ashore in northwest
California.

High pressure and southerly flow will be the dominant features in
southwest LA/southeast TX for much of the weekend. Friday and
Saturday look predominantly dry, however with strong WAA off the
Gulf and wavering midlevel heights, very low end rain chances will
exist over northern portions of the area during each afternoon.

Notably higher rain chances return later Sunday when the approaching
shortwave swings across the Rockies. Latest guidance is is fairly
separated on how the wave behaves beyond this point. The GFS keeps
the low more amplified into Monday with a west-east progression
across the US, while the ECMWF is more inclined to quickly lift out
the trof early Monday. While each model has their differences, each
one does have a jet entrance region which overspreads the region
late Monday, which would assist in some storm formation. Ridging
builds in quickly thereafter on Tuesday morning.

Temperatures will remain well above normal (10 to 15 degrees) under
the strong WAA regime throughout the entirety of the longterm.
Monday may see a brief break in the spring-like heat thanks to cloud
cover and some rain-cooled air, with similar temperatures Tuesday on
northerly winds.

Issued at 1155 AM CST Tue Feb 21 2023

No significant changes to previous TAF thinking. Main issues today
continue to be the elevated srly winds thanks to the deepening low
pressure over the Red River Valley as well as the low ceilings
thanks to the saturated layer sfc to around 900 mb per this
mornings sounding data. While there is plenty of dry air aloft,
the saturated layer looks sturdy enough to prevent it from
scouring out with any mixing, although ceilings are expected to
rise with heating this afternoon, especially at KAEX. Thereafter
tonight, ceilings are forecast to again lower per forecast
soundings/time-height sections. Fog is not expected to be an issue
at all as low-level jetting maintains the elevated winds.

Sea fog will remain in place this morning across the near shore
waters including the lakes and bays. Wind may mix out most of the
fog during the afternoon, however there is a chance that fog
redevelops tonight.

Winds will increase into Wednesday as low pressure moves across
the plains. An SCA will be needed.

Winds will decrease into Thursday and sea fog will likely
redevelop and linger through Friday.

the area. A few stronger storms will be possible during the
afternoon, mainly from the Lakes area of southeast Texas into
central Louisiana, with storms capable of producing strong wind
gusts.
