Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 1141 AM CST Mon Feb 20 2023 ...UPDATED AVIATION FORECAST DISCUSSION... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 306 AM CST Mon Feb 20 2023 KEY MESSAGES... * After a mild start to the week it will turn very cold by midweek with winter storm conditions likely. * Bitter cold wind chills are expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning. * Temperatures moderate quickly back to near normal next weekend. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday) Issued at 306 AM CST Mon Feb 20 2023 Westerly downslope flow will bring a warm up to the area today. Deep mixing will help push highs into the lower 50s across portions of the Sandhills into southwest Nebraska. Winds just off the surface are quite strong this morning (40+ kts at H85). Already seeing some decent mixing of stronger winds to the surface this morning, with gusts nearing 30 mph at North Platte. This is localized however with other observations showing little in the way of any gusts. Localized strong wind gusts will remain possible just about anywhere across western Nebraska through the morning then subside this afternoon as winds aloft decrease. A weak cold front does push into northern Nebraska this evening. There is little in the way of CAA behind the front but a shift in winds to more northerly can be expected. This will be short lived however. A weak surface high quickly pushes across the area and winds shift to the south by Tuesday morning as the high passes. Longwave troughing will begin to dig southward along the west coast and into the northern Rockies Tuesday...with the flow aloft transitioning to southwest downstream across our area. Deep surface cyclogenesis will commence across eastern Colorado ahead of the troughing. By late Tuesday afternoon the surface low should be centered near Akron, and quite deep at 988mb. Strong gusty south winds will materialize ahead of this low across Kansas into Nebraska. The south winds will advect warmer air northward and one more mild day forecast. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday) Issued at 306 AM CST Mon Feb 20 2023 Upper level troughing will carve farther southward into the southern Rockies and desert southwest on Wednesday...with a deep surface low tracking from eastern Colorado through southern Kansas. Meanwhile, a strong arctic cold front will surge southward across the Northern and Central Plains, with strong mid-level FGEN developing north of the arctic front across Nebraska. The strong FGEN will coincide with deep lift overspreading the area as the upper trough begins to eject northeastward toward the Central and Northern Plains. The result will be snow developing first across western Nebraska Wednesday morning, then spreading northeastward toward northern Nebraska and South Dakota during the afternoon. Snow, heavy at times, will continue into Wednesday night as the upper trough pivots across the area. Total snow accumulation greater than eight inches are likely across northern Nebraska with lesser amounts expected farther south. Current thinking is that 3-5" will accumulate along the I-80 corridor. This system is still 48 hours away and these amounts are subject to change. Blowing and drifting snow is likely Wednesday night into Thursday. Strong north winds develop within area of tight surface pressure gradient between arctic high pressure to the north and a deep surface low to the south. Bitter cold wind chills will be the other story. The coldest readings will be Thursday morning when values nearing -40F will be possible across northwest Nebraska. Overall this will be a quick shot of arctic air. A rapid warm up is expected by Saturday as westerly downslope flow pushes highs back to near or above normal. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 1140 AM CST Mon Feb 20 2023 VFR conditions are expected to prevail through tonight across western and north central Nebraska. Increasing mid/low clouds are expected overnight, and MVFR CIGs are possible for terminals east of an ANW to BBW line into tomorrow morning. Northerly LLWS will also increase for all area terminals into tomorrow morning as well. Behind the front, snow will develop and become heavy at times over northern Nebraska where significant snow accumulations are possible Wednesday and Wednesday night. For the southern Sandhills and southwestern Nebraska, snowfall totals are expected to be lighter. Snowfall totals of 6 to 12 inches are likely across the central and northern Sandhills and northern Nebraska. Across the southern Sandhills into central and southwest Nebraska, 3 to 5 inches are expected. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for much of the Sandhills and northern Nebraska. In addition to snow and blowing snow, dangerously cold wind chills will develop Wednesday and continue through Thursday night.
