Showers and storms have generally ended across Eastern Kentucky
this morning. As such, have removed the mention of thunder and
any lingering showers in the far east will be out within the next
hour. Clear skies are filling in nicely, before lower clouds
return later this afternoon into tonight. Have refined sky grids
to better match the latest satellite trends. Have also loaded and
blended in the latest T/Td/Wind obs for consistency. Updated grids
along with a new set of zones/radio products have been sent out.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Sunday)
Issued at 458 AM EDT SAT APR 1 2023

Convection really grew upscale through Central Kentucky early this
morning, forming a QLCS which has tracked through the CWA.
Fortunately, the last of activity will shift out of Eastern Kentucky
this morning with generally isolated thunderstorm chances that could
bring down some gusty winds ahead of the cold frontal boundary
before 12z. In behind this initial front, clearing skies are filling
in across west and Central Kentucky, finding us briefly into mid day.

The next focus becomes strong to damaging environmental winds driven
by a tight pressure gradient and strong LLJ. HREF means suggest 50-
60 mph surface gusts mid morning through mid afternoon for our
northern half of counties along with BUFKIT mean momentum transfer
values as high as 60 kts in some guidance. As such, will continue
the High Wind Warning as is, with a Wind Advisory elsewhere through
this afternoon. Sustained winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 60+
mph are expected, with the highest of these values across elevated
and exposed locations in the SE along Virginia into the afternoon.
As the low traverses further north and east today, winds will
slacken into the overnight, becoming light by Sunday morning.
Outside of the wind threat, a secondary cold front is expected to
drop southeast out of the Midwest and Mid Mississippi Valley, where
lingering low level moisture along the base of the upper level
trough could bring isolated shower to sprinkle chances in the north.
Low level clouds will fill back in because of a frontal inversion
setup and sub 700mb moist layer into the afternoon and through the
night.

Given the secondary cold front passing this afternoon, temperatures
are expected to fall the latter half of the day where overnight lows
will be tricky. Given the low clouds hampering in a portion of the
area, lows will likely be fairly uniform for the northeastern two
thirds of the CWA, in the low to mid 30s. More optimistic in the SW,
as coverage won't be as thick and a better opportunity for
ridge/valley splits will present itself. Either way, areas of frost
will be likely into Sunday morning, so sensitive vegetation should
be tended to and covered overnight. Into Sunday, upper level heights
rebound and surface high pressure settles in across the Tennessee
Valley. Mostly sunny skies with near seasonable highs will close out
the weekend.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Friday)
Issued at 443 AM EDT SAT APR 1 2023

The period will start with zonal flow punctuated by a shortwave
trough rippling through to our south. The GFS, NAM, and ECMWF all
have the feature, but show differences in timing and latitude.
Any rain would be minimal, and with the uncertainties, have used a
20% POP on Monday (but it may need to be added to Sunday night).

As the shortwave passes by, larger scale changes will be taking
place, with the flow aloft starting to buckle. A western CONUS
trough is expected to be in place by Tuesday, inducing ridging
further east. Warm air advection will be occurring on the east
side of the trough, bringing moisture north off the gulf. A potent
upper low lifting northeast from the central Rockies will support
another intense surface low which will track across the upper
Midwest at midweek. Its trailing cold front should pass through KY
on Wednesday and Wednesday evening. The open gulf, upper level
support of the approaching upper trough, and the cold front will
all work to support precip for our area. The POP will increase
Tuesday into Wednesday, with thunderstorms also a possibility as
instability builds in the warm sector ahead of the cold front.

A break in precip is forecast behind the cold front from late
Thursday into Thursday night. However, the front will stall across
the Deep South, with moisture overrunning its north side. At this
longer time range, model agreement begins to degrade, but both the
ECMWF and GFS show a northern stream impulse aloft heading
southeast across the Midwest and possibly reacting with a weak
southern stream perturbation aloft closer to the front. This could
draw deep moisture back north over KY, and chance POPs were used
to finish the work week.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Sunday morning)
ISSUED AT 750 AM EDT SAT APR 1 2023

VFR conditions will begin as of TAF issuance, as clear skies build
in from west to east through the morning. Winds will significantly
pick up during this time out of the southwest to west, blowing
between 15 and 25 kts with gusts of 35 to 45 kts late morning
through the afternoon. Low clouds will also begin filling back in
as a secondary cold front passes through today. The post frontal
inversion will lock in low level moisture, and reduced ceilings in
the MVFR category should be expected for all but SME and possibly
LOZ this evening into tonight. Winds will also begin to slacken
during this time, generally blowing at less than 10 kts after 5z
Sunday. As drier air sinks into the lower levels, ceilings should
scatter out, returning to the VFR category by periods end.
