Today through Friday...

Today start's off unseasonably mild, a theme across the area for the
couple of weeks now. Highs today will likely reach back into the
mid/upper 70s F to lower 80s F. Southerly flow is increasing ahead
of an approaching front associated with a compact closed upper low
and shortwave trough. Surface pressures fall through the day to our
west as the surface low deepens and begins to occlude. This upper
low will eventually weaken as it transverses the axis of a stout
eastern CONUS ridge, but not before taking on a negative tilt and
serving as the focus for a severe weather episode stretching from
near Texarkana this afternoon and into the ArkLaMiss by late tonight.

Overnight showers and storms have reinforced an east-west oriented
boundary that could be the focus for some storms by afternoon, but
by and large the majority of the strong to severe storm risk will
hold off until tonight. Deep boundary layer moisture is in place and
as expected dew points across the area are in the middle and upper
60s. Aloft, heights will fall late this evening with the approach of
the upper low and the increasing divergence aloft should allow for
an approaching band of convection to persist with some threat for
severe weather west of the Mississippi River by midnight, near I-55
around dawn, and finally exiting east of the area after mid morning.
The primary risks will be damaging winds and the possibility for
tornadoes. Due to the very strong wind field aloft driving strong
low and mid level shear profiles, a strong tornado can't be ruled
out, particularly for areas that are both generally along and west
of the I-55 corridor and along and west of the I-20 corridor.

To highlight these risks, the existing categorical risk area
delineation was maintained from the previous forecast cycle. The
highest of these risks approximates the area outlined above and is
maintained with an Enhanced Risk (3/5) for severe weather
designation.

Both initially just ahead of the front tonight and again following
the passage of the front on Friday, a very tight pressure gradient
and favorable conditions for mixing with strong winds aloft being
brought to the surface will result in gusty winds that could become
damaging. For this reason, an HWO product highlighting this risk was
adjusted to include a contour depicting "Significant" wind threats
was added for portion of the upper Delta where wind gusts may exceed
50 mph. A wind advisory was also issued for much of the area to
account for more widespread gusts that may reach 40-50 mph. These
conditions could result in downed trees and powerlines as well as
difficulty travel particularly for vehicles with high profile. The
strong winds will initially be southerly with hazardous gusts
possible generally after 9 pm tonight. This would initially pose
greatest risk to those traveling on roads oriented east to west.
Winds become westerly by morning and could reach maximum values
during the day Friday, with greatest travel risk then posed to those
traveling on roads oriented north to south. Winds should diminish by
evening.

In addition to the winds, a noticeable chill will come with the
frontal passage and temperatures Friday will be 10-15 degrees cooler

Friday night through Wednesday: In the wake of the departing
system, the temporarily flattened southeast CONUS ridge will allow
for cooler temperatures this weekend over the forecast area.
However, "cooler" in this remarkably warm stretch of weather
means readings near or slightly above climatology can be expected
with lows down into the 40s Sat/Sun mornings. This cool-down will
be shortly lived as the warm ridge is forecast by global models
to rebuild early next week. Increasing warm advection should bring
the 80s back into the picture along/south of I-20 for Mon-Wed. A
southward push of continental polar air beneath the ridge may help
to set up a frontal boundary Wednesday over northern portions of
the area, and this could increase shower chances, but no
signficant shortwave troughs are expected to affect our region
