Today and Tonight: As an upper ridge builds, and high pressure
moves to the east, winds will begin to turn back out of the south,
which will allow temperatures to warm into the mid to upper 70s
across the area Thursday. Southerly flow prevails overnight
Thursday, will provide for strong warm air advection and moisture
advection, setting us up for the potential for severe weather
Friday. /SAS/

Friday through Wednesday night: Main focus in the long term remains
the concern for severe storms across most of our CWA late Friday
afternoon and evening. Come Friday morning an amplified upper level
trough shifting east of the Rockies will be closing off a low over
the northern Plains and helping to deepen a surface low over eastern
Nebraska/western Iowa. These lows will shift east over the Great
Lakes region through Friday night before lifting to the northeast
Saturday. This low pressure system will drop a cold front that will
approach our western most zones by late afternoon and clear our
southeast most zones Saturday morning. Deep moisture will increase
along with a strengthening wind field across our region Friday ahead
of the approaching cold front. By afternoon PWATs look to pool to
near an inch and three quarters with surface dew points in the mid
60s over our western zones. An 850mb wind in excess of 50kts along
with a 500mb in excess of 70kts will lead to strong deep layer shear
in an environment where MLCAPEs will be in excess of 1000j/kg. This
environment will support the development of supercells in our west
initially during the late afternoon and early evening before
activity becomes more linear during the evening along and ahead of
the cold front. Not much has changed from yesterday concerning the
threats and areas at greatest risk for severe storms. The greatest
severe thunderstorm threat will be across the northwest most
portions of our CWA that remains outlooked in an Enhanced Risk for
severe storms. A Slight risk extends south of the Enhanced area to
around the I-20 corridor with a Marginal south to the Highway 84
corridor. Any severe thunderstorm could produce damaging wind gusts,
hail, and tornadoes. Timing remains late afternoon to around
midnight, with the chance for any severe storms decreasing farther
south and east overnight. By Saturday morning the rain will be
ending in our southeast while cooler and much drier air moves into
our CWA in the wake of the cold front. Dry weather is expected
Saturday and Saturday night as our winds aloft become nearly zonal
and a surface high shifts east across the region. By Sunday morning
the surface high will be to our east setting up a light return flow
that will try to increase low level moisture ahead of a disturbance
moving east across the southern Plains. This disturbance will
increase our rain chances from the west Sunday afternoon. Rain
chances will continue through Monday before tapering off Monday
night as the disturbance shifts east of Mississippi. Mid level
ridging will develop over our region Tuesday before shifting east
Wednesday as a large amplitude upper level trough develops over the
western CONUS and begins closing off another low and helping support
another surface low. There are significant placement and timing
issues with this low pressure system and the potential for severe
storms affecting our CWA. Currently thinking suggests that this
system may produce a severe storm threat over our CWA in advance of
its associated cold front, Wednesday and Wednesday night. Wl hold
off introducing a severe threat in our HWO with this system until
more consistency is seen in later model runs. /22/
