Today through Tonight...
Main concerns in the short term are dense fog in the SE & light
icing potential in the NW Delta through Wed morning.
Today: Sfc analysis indicates strong 1035mb sfc high building ENE
over MO into the Mid W. N winds & strong cold advection are present.
Synoptic & water vapor analysis indicates broad isentropic ascent
with the cold core upper low situated over the Baja Peninsula. Local
radars indicate broad area of rain in the far NW Delta. Sfc temps
are hovering in the low 30s, with some obs right around freezing.
This is in contrast to a sharp temp gradient with temps in mid-40s
to low 50s in the Natchez Trace corridor while near 60 degrees in
the Pine Belt. Wouldn't be surprising that some freezing rain could
be occurring in N Bolivar Co this morning. Recent HREF freezing rain
accumulation model (FRAM) & hi-res CAMs including HRRR/FV3 &
especially the ARW, indicate a wider expanse of the Delta will have
some potential. With strong cold advection persisting, highs will
struggle to reach much above freezing, basically only in the 34-35
degree range, while some areas in N Bolivar could struggle to reach
freezing. Any rain coverage will begin to dwindle by mid-morning,
limiting some of the icing concerns but only briefly before another
wave of rain & icing moves back in by late aftn-evening hours.
Concerns now will mainly be on very elevated surfaces &
trees/powerlines but less on bridges/overpasses through midday.
Added a Winter Weather Advisory for the NW in Ashley-Chicot in AR &
Washington-Sunflower-Leflore in MS. Some of these areas could see
some brief icing, but majority of concerns will persist into Wed
morn. Updates to the HWO are upcoming but will likely include a
slight shift to the ESE in the Limited area.
Further SE, dense fog developed overnight & slowly shifting ESE
overnight, with the most persistent into the I-59 corridor & S of I-
20. Kept the dense fog advisory ongoing through 10AM, but some in
the Pine Belt could extend an hour or so later. No changes to the
ongoing Dense Fog Advisory & HWO are needed. 00Z upper air analysis
indicates strong subtropical ridge centered over the SE Gulf of
Mexico & ridging extending into the SE portions of the region. This
will keep most areas dry SE of the Natchez Trace, outside some light
drizzle. Highs here will peak into the upper 50s-low 60s to even
near 70 degrees in the Pine Belt in far SE MS.
Tonight: Sfc high will gradually build ENE into the OH Valley &
Great Lakes region by Wed morning. This will keep strong NNE cold
advection. With another shortwave, ascent over the baroclinic zone &
shallow cold, recent trends have been too warm. Due to this, have
trended down lows towards CAMs but not as aggressive as some. Lows
should fall below freezing over the NW Delta & into the Hwy 82
corridor & W of I-55. This combined with another round of light-
moderate rain will lead to additional freezing rain potential
ramping up again through mid-late morning Wed. Expanded the new
Winter Weather Advisory to catch Morehouse-W Carroll in LA & Leflore
in MS from this evening through midday Wed. In total, expect ice
accums to be generally up to a tenth of an inch, best combo of ice
accums & temps falling into the 29-31 degree range will be in the
first five counties in AR & NW MS. This could form on elevated
surfaces, trees & powerlines & make for slick conditions on
bridges/overpasses again Wed morning. Some rain chances could
dwindle outside of the Delta prior to daybreak while some may move
back in just prior to midday Wed. /DC/
Wednesday through next Tuesday...
A second round of light freezing rain is expected to occur across
portions of northwest MS beginning early Wednesday morning as early
morning lows are expected to drop a few degrees below freezing.
Because of this, we have continued to advertise a "Limited" threat
for light ice accumulation particularly for most of the Delta. Some
elevated surfaces/vegetation could see some light icing accumulate.
This brief period of light ice should begin to dwindle down by late
Wednesday morning as afternoon temperatures are forecasted to climb
above freezing across our CWA. Most of the rain should push east out
of our forecast area by Wednesday afternoon giving us a small break
from the rain. This small break is not expected to last long as rain
chances could sneak back into our forecast area by Wednesday
evening.
Rain chances should continue heading into Thursday as global models
highlight a surface front remaining somewhat stationary over the
region. In addition to this, an upper wave should begin to track
east introducing additional southwesterly moisture transport across
our CWA. Most of the area could see rainfall totals between 2-3
inches of rain as some of these storms could have the potential to
produce locally heavy downpours at times. Because of this, we have
continued to advertise a "Limited" threat for flash flooding through
midday Thursday. The rain should begin to taper off early Friday
morning as the front finally pushes east out of the area. A freeze
could be possible heading into Saturday with morning lows in the
upper 20s. Otherwise, surface ridging should begin to build across
most of the eastern CONUS over the weekend leading to dry weather
across our forecast region by the end of the long term period. /CRJ/

31/15Z at GLH & GWO before increased coverage at GTR, HKS, JAN &
MEI after 31/22Z-01/02Z. Due to cold thermal gradient around,
