.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 409 AM EST Sun Dec 17 2023

Seasonably mild weather with lingering showers will continue for
one more day with highs near 48 before wintry weather arrives
Monday. Travel conditions will deteriorate through the day,
especially downwind of Lake Michigan. Numerous lake effect heavy
snow showers with blowing snow can be expected.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

The initial upper level system was still over the area early this
morning. This system was producing light scattered showers. Areas
of fog were developing west of highway 31 in the wake of the
system. Winds will increase today and help to mix out the fog this
morning. The initial upper level system will lift northeast ahead
of a strong cold front that will approach the area tonight. Lows
will be near or slightly below freezing. Winter weather impacts
are not expected before daybreak.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

Key Messages:

*Lake effect snow showers will form rapidly Monday morning and
 move south/southeast, the showers will persist into Monday night.
*Winter Weather Advisory for wintry travel with lake effect snow
 and blowing snow causing travel impacts.
*Wind gusts to 45 mph are likely near Lake Michigan

Have issued a Winter Weather Advisory in coordination with
surrounding offices and WPC. It looks like there will be better
chances for impactful winter weather Monday through Monday night.
The scenario supported by the GFS and more fine-tuned by several
of the high resolution models still depicted impactful wintry
weather in about a 21 hour window from 7am Mon to 4am Tuesday.
Delta T values will rise close to 20C with colder air spreading
over the area Monday (still -12C @ 850 mb 12Z Monday). Believe
initial impacts will be minor before the onset of the morning
commute Monday; however, surface temps should be slowing falling
during the day with lake effect snow increasing, travel is likely
to become more hazardous as the day goes on.

Bands of lake effect snow (or eventually a single band) are
expected given numerous factors including favorable snow
growth/DGZ in the cloud layer, preconditioning from Lake Superior,
not much shear in the cloud layer, briefly strong synoptic lift
and deeper cloud layers with the cloud tops/ELs >15,000'.
Thinking snowfall amounts will be extremely variable, but amounts
generally 2-4" near Lake Michigan with higher amounts in the
bands in the more favorable regions south/southeast of Lake
Michigan. Sustained winds of 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph will
cause blowing snow later in the day in the heavier snow bands. The
latest WSSI (2am EST) is starting to capture the wintry impacts
and looks to be in the ball part.

Otherwise, Rapidly falling inversion heights will bring an end to
the snow late Monday night as low and mid layers dry out and
become unsupportive for precipitation. Mild weather is expected
starting Wednesday will likely continue until at least Christmas.
Light rain is possible starting Friday as more energy arrives from
the northern stream.

Robust nrn stream disturbance ovr sw MB will dig/sharpen rapidly
sewd into se MI this period. This sys will induce rapid
deepening/intensification of lake aggregate troughing as intense caa
wing wraps quickly swd. In addn, preceding warm advection wing Mon
morning may yield a brief but intense period of snow as stout upper
trough axis pushes through.

Thereafter very favorable long axis fetch develops through wrn flank
of intense upper low and with strong moisture flux within combined
lake/synoptic induced deep vertical motion plume will illicit an
intense primary lake snow band. Highres guidance consensus would
place this invof KSBN and perhaps even KFWA for a time Mon night
with LIFR restrictions likely. Until then brief but intense snow
squalls likely as upper trough pivots through Mon morning with IFR
restrictions expected. Otherwise strong west, veering to northwest
winds Mon with gusts aoa 30kts.
