Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Indianapolis IN 254 AM EST Tue Jan 24 2023 .Short Term...(Today and tonight) Issued at 254 AM EST Tue Jan 24 2023 Key Points: WINTER STORM WARNING across much of central Indiana from Late Tuesday Night through Wednesday Afternoon * A significant winter storm will impact central Indiana * Generally 5 to 9 inches of snow expected. * Locally higher amounts north and west of Indianapolis, with lesser amounts further south and east * Significant impacts to travel expected Wednesday morning Discussion: No major changes regarding the well-advertised storm system that is poised to bring significant winter weather to the region. Model consensus has been honing in on the idea of a surface low track riding northeast along the Ohio river from southwestern Kentucky up towards southeastern Indiana. This track would place much of central Indiana, particularly north and west of I-70, within a broad area of accumulating snowfall. Some precipitation type issues remain south of I-70, which would be closer to the low pressure center. This area remains among the most uncertain in terms of total snowfall as any rain may limit amounts. Additionally, the system's dry slot may edge into our southern counties during the day on Wednesday. A deviation to the north/south would naturally decrease/increase amounts across these counties. Our system is currently taking shape across the Desert Southwest as of this writing. At 500mb, analysis puts the center of the vort max just along the US Mexican border near southeast Arizona. Precipitation is beginning to break out across west Texas, signaling the beginning of our storm. Guidance is initialized quite well regarding the placement of the upper-level vort max, so only expecting minor run to run deviations in the models between now and event onset. By the time precipitation arrives in Indiana around 03-06z, model soundings continue to indicate that surface temps may be just above freezing. Some rain is possible at onset, but with a substantial dry layer aloft, evaporational cooling should bring the column down below freezing rather quickly. Any near to slightly above freezing surface temperatures are expected to be shallow, enough to be overcome by higher snowfall rates allowing accumulations to begin soon after onset. Ground temperatures are not expected to be much of an issue either. Multiple days of near-freezing temps have allowed ground temp readings to cool into the mid to upper-30s. If the light snow event this past Sunday is any indication of what may happen tomorrow, it's that the snow should have no difficulty accumulating onto roadways and paved surfaces with sufficiently heavy rates. The snow is likely to be a heavy wet snow as well. Model soundings show a deep nearly isothermal temperature profile below the dendritic growth zone (DGZ) through sunrise Wednesday. Lower snow ratios would then be expected, with something nearer to 8:1 than the standard 10:1. As the surface low passes to the southeast, cooling aloft should bring the saturated layer into the DGZ, allowing for higher ratios closer to 10:1 or 12:1. This would most likely occur within the wrap-around / cold conveyor area of precip. Enhanced rates within areas of mesoscale banding are also possible on the back side of this system. Guidance is in good agreement in regard to the 700mb low passing over the Indy area. Generally, the best potential for deformation banding occurs along and just northwest of the 700mb low track. If the current track holds, some locations north and west of Indy may receive locally higher amounts than what is shown in the current forecast. Upgrading the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning for most of our CWA in this forecast package. Amounts across the far south remain uncertain due to mixing potential and dry slotting. So will put the southern tier of counties into a winter weather advisory for now. Summary: Snow will begin around midnight Wednesday morning / Late Tuesday night. Snow ratios will be a bit lower with dense wet snow during the night. Snow quickly accumulating on the road surfaces is expected as higher rates / lack of solar radiation will overcome any residual ground warmth. A couple of inches will likely already be on the ground by sunrise Wednesday, leading to hazardous driving conditions. Rain may mix in temporarily near and just south of the surface low, which will most likely pass just south of I-70. Higher snowfall rates are possible during the day on Wednesday as deformation banding on the northwest side of the low begins to take shape. Snow begins to wind down late in the afternoon, after 4-6 PM or so. Snow totals of 5 to 10 inches are expected, with the highest amounts north and west of Indianapolis. Lesser amounts further to the southeast. && .Long Term...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 254 AM EST Tue Jan 24 2023 The long term period will initially feature negative 500-mb height anomalies associated with broad troughing across the central and eastern part of the country into the weekend. Once the snow- producing mid-latitude cyclone departs to the northeast we will remain in cyclonic surface flow per MSLP pattern, and another midlevel shortwave trough will be approaching. This is a favorable pattern for snow showers and we have increased probabilities above the blends which have a low bias in this pattern. There is good agreement within the deterministic/ensemble model suite of another shortwave trough approaching Friday with associated deep saturation and modest ascent resulting in some light snow. Into the weekend, the synoptic-scale pattern shifts to an amplifying southeastern ridge and retrograding trough. Chaos in the ensembles increases, especially early next week, but the general theme should be (1) below average predictability for temperatures given proximity of a strong quasi-stationary baroclinic zone in our area, and (2) continuation of transient minor shortwaves and modest ascent/moisture leading to periodic minor precipitation episodes into the middle of next week. && .Aviation...(06Z TAF Issuance) Issued at 1259 AM EST Tue Jan 24 2023 Impacts: * Period of MVFR ceilings this morning, first KLAF then KIND * Tuesday night will bring low ceilings, snow, and reduced visibility * Southwest wind trending southeast late today Discussion: Various satellite products and METAR show stratus layer to our north advancing southeast.
