Issued at 316 AM CST Thu Mar 2 2023 A powerhouse early spring storm system will move into the Midwest by Friday bringing gusty winds, widespread heavy rainfall, and the potential for accumulating snow. Conditions then turn drier and warmer into early next week. && .SHORT TERM...(Through Friday) ISSUED AT 316 AM CST Thu Mar 2 2023 A southern stream shortwave will lift and pivot out of the Southern Plains and toward the Mississippi Valley tonight with an attendant surface low tracking along the I-70 corridor of Illinois by Friday morning. The main forecast concerns with this storm system include: (1) gusty winds, (2) widespread heavy rainfall, and (3) the potential for accumulating snow. Winds: A deepening 980-mb surface low will move into the region Friday morning and bring 20-25 mph gradient winds with gusts between 35-50 mph. Some of the latest hi-res guidance (HRRR/NAMNEST) offer the potential for gusts near 60 mph, but an elevated warm layer should work to limit these high-end gusts from mixing to the surface. Using the HREF mean as a guide, we've issued a Wind Advisory for locations generally along and south of I-72 where the highest probabilities(> 75% chance) to exceed 45 mph exist. Heavy Rainfall: The greatest threat with this system will be widespread heavy rainfall. As upper-level jet cores loosely couple over the Mississippi Valley by Friday morning, strong synoptic lift and enhanced frontogenesis (850-700mb layer) will take full advantage of a moisture- laden airmass (PWATs exceeding 90th percentile of climatology). Trends from the latest Grand Ensemble (GEFS/EPS/CMCE) have moved the axis of heaviest QPF a little further north, now focusing on locations along and south of the Illinois River Valley where there exists a high chance (>75%) for QPF to exceed 1". Further south along I-70, there remains a low chance (10%) that QPF exceeds 3". The lack of instability should preclude the flash flood threat with convective updrafts/cold-pooling largely absent across our forecast area. Nevertheless, the strong frontogenesis and anomalous moisture in and of itself could support 0.25"-0.50"/hr rainfall rates for a couple hours Friday morning. Any flooding that does occur should be confined to small streams, creeks and other low- lying areas. Confidence in receiving heavy rainfall is now high enough for us to issue a Flood Watch along our I-70 counties, and it's not unreasonable to think we might bleed this northward later this afternoon. Accumulating Snow: There remains a stunning spread in both global and short-term, hi- res guidance, but it's getting too hard to ignore the upside of an accumulating snow event for some portion of central Illinois Friday afternoon. A quick glance at deterministic guidance reveals a pool of -1 to -1.5 PVU and steep lapse rates (7.5 C/km) within the DGZ atop a layer of enhanced F-gen (850-700mb layer). As a result of the strong dynamics/thermodynamics, it's no wonder the latest suite of hi-res guidance is resolving precip rates of 0.25"-0.50"/hr. The only questions that remain are: (1) where exactly will the deformation axis of heaviest QPF set up, and (2) how quickly might it transition to snow? (1) As much as we would have liked to have pinpointed the deformation axis, the reality is that we haven't. As alluded to above, the spread in model guidance remains stunning and the north-to-south cut-off in potential snowfall amounts is razor thin, especially as dry air begins to wrap into the occluding storm system. Rather than pick winners and losers, we continue to lean on ensemble guidance which currently resolves a baggy axis of accumulating snowfall along a line extending from Beardstown to Bloomington to Kankakee. This lines up fairly well with the old-school rule of thumb that the heaviest axis of snowfall will generally follow the northern periphery of the 700-mb low. (2) Using the Bourgouin method in BUFKIT to diagnose how quickly a transition to snow might occur, it appears that it could happen as early as Noon Friday despite temperatures in the 34-38 degF range. This timing lines up well with when the upper low lifts into central Illinois and provides the necessary dynamic cooling. Once the transition to snow does occur, it will likely accumulate efficiently. Thermo profiles are promoting a near isothermal layer near freezing beneath the DGZ, which should support large/sticky aggregates of snow, and given the dynamics/thermodynamics at play, 1-2"/hr rates are a good possibility. While much collaboration was done overnight with respect to Winter Weather Headlines, we have decided to hold off on a Winter Storm Watch for now -- confidence remains too low. .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Wednesday) ISSUED AT 316 AM CST Thu Mar 2 2023 Drier conditions settle into the region Friday night into Saturday behind the departing storm system. Fast mid-level flow and additional shortwave energy lifts across the Plains Sunday night into Monday bringing another quick frontal system through the Upper Midwest. Moisture return looks too paltry ahead of this system to support much rain, but it would be rain as temperatures bounce back into the 50s and 60s into next week. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday morning) Issued at 539 AM CST Thu Mar 2 2023 Lower ceilings are expected to shift back north later this afternoon along a surface trough.
