Issued at 336 AM CST Thu Feb 23 2023 Windy conditions will develop across central Illinois today as a cold front passes through the region. High temperatures will be achieved during the morning...ranging from the lower 40s in the Illinois River Valley to the lower 60s far southeast around Lawrenceville. Readings will steadily fall through the afternoon. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 336 AM CST Thu Feb 23 2023 09z/3am surface analysis shows a 1004mb low over far eastern Iowa with a warm front extending southeastward along a Moline to Lafayette, Indiana line. Meanwhile the trailing cold front is crossing the Mississippi River. With southerly winds in place across the majority of the KILX CWA, am expecting temperatures to continue to rise over the next couple off hours before the cold front pushes eastward to the I-57 corridor by mid-morning, then into Indiana by around midday. Resulting temperature forecast will be tricky, but think daytime highs will range from the lower 40s in the Illinois River Valley...to the lower 60s along/southeast of a Robinson to Olney line. Once the front passes, brisk westerly winds gusting 25-35mph will cause temps to fall throughout the remainder of the day. Breezy and cold weather will be on tap for tonight as lows drop into the teens and lower 20s...and wind-chill values dip into the single digits along/west of I-55. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) ISSUED AT 336 AM CST Thu Feb 23 2023 After a chilly Friday, a warm and mostly dry weekend is expected...with highs in the middle to upper 40s on Saturday and in the middle 50s on Sunday. After that, attention turns to the next approaching storm system slated to impact the region early next week. Short-wave energy evident on latest water vapor imagery off the coast of Washington/Oregon will dive southward, forming a closed upper low over California this weekend. As additional short-wave energy drops southward, it will eject the California low E/NE into the Midwest by Monday. This system and its associated surface low will take a similar track to the previous system. Given vigorous upper dynamics, a stronger surface low, and adequate deep-layer moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, confidence is growing that another potentially heavy rainfall event will unfold Sunday night into Monday. Early projections suggest storm total rainfall of 1 to 1.50 across central Illinois, but these numbers could rise...especially if convection comes into play. Have added slight chance thunder to the forecast Sunday night, but thunder may also be needed during the day Monday as the surface low arrives. Once the system departs, mild and dry weather will return for Tuesday and Wednesday. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday morning) Issued at 557 AM CST Thu Feb 23 2023 Cold front is currently pushing across the I-55 corridor. Based on area obs, FROPA will be accompanied by an abrupt wind shift to the W/NW with gusts of 20-25kt and a lowering to MVFR ceilings. A brief one-hour period of IFR ceilings is likely at both KSPI/KDEC. While the initial band of low clouds associated with the front may scatter for a short time after sunrise, a larger area of MVFR ceilings across Iowa/northern Missouri will pivot eastward into central Illinois later this morning, then linger through the afternoon.
