Unseasonably cool weather will continue through the weekend, with
opportunities for frost or freezing conditions both tonight and
especially tomorrow night. Next week will be less chilly, albeit
still cooler than normal for late April, with multiple chances for
precipitation throughout the week mainly south of I-72.

At 315 AM the most recent MRMS radar imagery shows the last of
the showers exiting our area, while the next wave of activity is
already evident across central Iowa. These showers, associated
with a shortwave that will translate across central Illinois mid
to late morning, will become prolific across the northeast half of
the area by lunchtime, when surface based instability
materializes. Elsewhere, we've added sprinkles, since QPF is not
likely given the dry layer up to 5kft evident on forecast
soundings but light precip is still possible given instability and
weak forcing beneath the shortwave disturbance.

HREF continues to advertise higher conditional probabilities for
snow than rain north of I-74 mainly with the earliest activity
today. Forecast soundings don't look cold enough to support snow,
however dynamic cooling in the stronger showers could chill the
lower atmosphere enough for some flakes to reach the surface. More
likely, the showers, even into the afternoon north of a Galesburg
to Lacon line, will produce some graupel with NAM and GFS
soundings each showing sub -7C/km sfc to 700mb lapse rates which
extend into the dendritic growth zone (~ -12C to -18C layer). With
high temperatures running nearly 20 degF below climatological
"normal," for many folks' intents and purposes it will be a
cloudy, dreary, and winter-like day suitable for staying in with a
book or movie.

Tonight, concerns begin for frost/freeze conditions. The Freeze
Watch which was in effect for Fulton, Knox, and Schuyler Counties
has been converted to a Warning, though confidence was barely high
enough to do so. Cloud cover will mitigate radiational cooling
across our northern counties, where nocturnal winds are forecast
to be most persistent; further south, however, clouds will be
fewer and winds lighter, and with temps forecast to dip into the
mid 30s concern over frost was sufficient that we pulled the
trigger on an Advisory there. There's still a chance that further
north frost could be an issue, but with forecast winds at 5-10
mph throughout the night and a 50-80% probability for cloud cover
confidence was not high enough to warrant an Advisory poleward of
a Macomb to Terre Haute line at this juncture.

Frost and freeze concerns are greater for the Sunday night period,
for which NBM has 50-70% probabilities for a freeze area-wide,
while its probs for frost-conducive temps of less than 36 degF are
upwards of 95%. Blending a bit to ConsAll guidance for sustained
wind speeds, our forecast features variable and generally sub 5 kt
winds by sunrise Monday morning; in addition, on the western edge
of the upper trough where QG divergence suggests positive omega
(subsidence) we should be virtually cloud free, as NBM suggests.
Hence, even with temps aloft beginning to increase as the upper
low moves away, radiational cooling should be sufficient for at
least a widespread frost, if not a freeze.

By and large, the extended forecast period will be characterized
by below normal temps and a lack of precip, though one opportunity
for rain will be late Monday into Tuesday, when a subtle
shortwave trough will present an opportunity for a few showers
along a quasistationary boundary somewhere across/near our area.
Around 30% of the EPS ensemble puts QPF across the region with
this activity, while around double the percentage of members in
the GEFS have it. For now, NBM's slight (20-30%) chance PoPs were
left in the forecast, but these may need to be tweaked up in
forthcoming forecast packages if ensemble guidance continues to
advertise higher confidence in precip.

Beyond Tuesday, the deterministic models and their ensembles are
in general agreement that we'll be on the benign west side of the
parent trough which will keep on spinning across the eastern Great
Lakes through mid-late week. However, ensemble guidance suggests
considerable uncertainty in the upper pattern develops by the end
of the forecast period, driven primarily by differences in the
evolution of another upper trough to form somewhere across the
eastern two thirds of the CONUS. By Friday, one cluster, driven
mostly by the EPS and CMCE, suggests the core of this trough will
be developing in the northern High Plains; another, dominated by
the GEFS, suggests it'll be broadly situated across the
Mississippi/Tennessee River Valleys; a third, only comprised of
about 20% of the grand ensemble (GE), has its center over the
Upper Midwest; another still, just 15% of the GE, has it across
the southeast. The deterministic models each have a surface low
developing somewhere in the Mississippi/Ohio Valleys, but with so
much uncertainty in even the upper pattern it's difficult to speak
with any confidence on precise weather heading into next weekend;
for now, our forecast looks slightly chilly, cloudy and possibly
rainy, but that's certainly subject to change.
