.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure to build across the area today offering cooler
temperatures and dry conditions. Deep low pressure to track
northeast from the lower Mississippi Valley across the Ohio
Valley Friday. As the system moves through, gusty winds and
widespread precipitation can be expected, with the potential
for heavy rainfall. High pressure and dry weather to return
this weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
No major changes from previous forecast. Did bump up cloud cover
a bit as current satellite imagery depicts the cloud shield to
our south extending a bit further north than previously
anticipated. Otherwise, all else on track.

Previous discussion:
Westerly mid level flow with surface cold front exiting ILN/s
southeast counties. In the wake of this front surface high
pressure to guild across the Great Lakes. Drier air will advect
into the region on northwest to north winds around 10 mph.
Morning clouds to decrease -- leaving partly cloudy sky
conditions. Cooler temperatures with highs from the upper 40s
northwest to near 60 southeast.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Multiple impacts are expected from a very strong storm system
Friday/Friday night. Threats for heavy rain/flooding, strong
synoptic winds and severe weather all exist.

Looking at the details...a negatively tilted mid level shortwave
to eject from the Lower MS Valley thru the Ohio Valley Friday
and into the Great Lakes Friday night as 100-110 KT jet rotates
around the base of this trof. Very deep surface low to track
thru northwest Ohio late Friday afternoon and Friday evening.

In response to a 60-65KT low level jet ahead of this system --
widespread rain showers to overspread the area late tonight
into Friday morning. This widespread warm advection
precipitation shifts north thru the FA Friday.

Some of the hi resolution model solutions are showing a thin
ribbon of surface based instability advecting into northern
KY/Southern Ohio, Friday afternoon ahead of cold front. Given
the intense wind fields, if even marginal instability develops,
damaging winds will be possible -- with also the potential for
a few tornadoes. Some of the CAM solutions show favorable
updraft helicity with supercell storms Friday afternoon.

The pressure gradient tightens with strong winds outside of
storms and the potential for wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph Friday
afternoon into Friday evening.

A signal for heavy rain also exists with PW values of 1.2 to
1.4 inches which is 250-300 percent of normal. HREF mean QPF
showing values of 2 to 3 inches -- with the highest totals over
the west and southwest. Have issued a Flood watch from late
tonight through late Friday night for all but the far southeast.

Will continue to highlight the severe and wind potential in the
HWO product.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Occluded front ahead of a strong surface low pressure system will be
pushing through the region to start the extended period Friday
evening. While there will likely be showers along this boundary, the
main concern will be strong, gusty winds. Forecast soundings show
the boundary layer becoming well mixed with the 12-km NAM exhibiting
shallow instability below 700mb. This could allow winds aloft in the
range of 45-60 knots (depending on model) to mix down with the
potential for advisory-level gusts continuing through around
midnight. Late Friday night, rain should decrease as cold air
advection drops temperatures into the 30s.

For Saturday and Sunday, surface high pressure builds across the
Ohio Valley. Many areas will see sunshine break through the clouds
as high temperatures continue above seasonal normals.

A much weaker low pressure system looks to shift east across the
Great Lakes Monday and Tuesday. An associated cold front could bring
some showers to the Ohio Valley Monday night. A reinforcing trough
drops temperatures back to near normal by mid-week.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A shield of high clouds slowly works its way east this
afternoon and VFR conditions prevail the rest of Thursday with
winds out of the northwest around 10 knots.

Big weather maker arrives overnight into Friday. Have SHRA at
all TAF sites throughout the morning with VSBYs and CIGs
dropping to MVFR then IFR into the afternoon hours as the warm
front moves through the area. Some embedded thunder is possible,
but confidence on timing is low at the moment, so did not
include in TAFs.

As the low pressure system moves through the area, wind
direction will transition to northeasterly, to eventually
easterly but will be very strong with sustained winds upwards to
20+ knots and gusts up to 35 knots. Some LLWS lit up in hi-res
models, but lacked spatial or temporal consistency, so did not
include in TAFs. Should note that a potent LLJ will be out of
the south around 2500 ft late morning/ early afternoon.

.OUTLOOK...Thunderstorms are possible on Friday afternoon with
stronger storms expected at southern sites. Strong winds
continue Friday PM. MVFR ceilings will likely continue into
Saturday.
