AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
Warm, moist southerly flow ahead of deepening low pressure over
the Central Plains will bring periods of showers and
thunderstorms to the region today. As the low tracks northeast
to the Great Lakes tonight, an associated cold front will bring
additional showers and thunderstorms. A secondary cold front on
Saturday will bring strong winds and additional chances for
precipitation. Winds and precipitation will decrease Saturday
night as high pressure builds into the region.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
No significant changes for the morning update. Elevated
instability will bring showers with a chance for storms through
the afternoon hours. Wind gusts remain in the 25-35 mph range
due to strong flow just off the surface and just enough mixing
during the daylight hours. Bumped up max temperatures a bit to
match with latest blended guidance. These highs will likely be
realized late in the period due to a relative decrease in shower
coverage.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
By late this afternoon into the first part of the evening,
there will be a relative lull in the pcpn activity. Eyes then
turn to deepening low pressure to our west and an associated
cold front. CAMs continue to show a convective line of showers
and thunderstorms developing to our west in a region of low
level convergence associated with the cold front. These showers
and storms will be in a regime of high shear/strong winds with a
60 to 70 knot LLJ. This convective line is forecast to pass
across our area between midnight and 4 AM. One of the main
things to focus on with this feature is the amount of SBCAPE.
This will be decreasing as the feature moves east into our area,
but there should be enough for the potential for stronger winds
to be brought down to the surface. As a result, our region
remains under a slight risk/marginal risk for severe
thunderstorms overnight. Damaging wind is the primary threat.
Will continue to highlight this threat in the HWO and social
media. Once the convection/front pass, our area will be located
in a post frontal dry slot where skies will clear. Outside of
storms, synoptic scale winds will remain breezy to locally
windy. Temperatures will rise some this evening, but then will
lower with rain and frontal passage. Lows by morning will range
from the upper 40s west to the mid 50s east.

Strong low pressure is forecast to track northeast through the
Great Lakes on Saturday. A secondary cold front with the low is
forecast to push east/southeast through the region during the
morning into the early afternoon hours. It will start out mostly
sunny at first, but then clouds will increase as CAA and
moisture along and in the wake of the front occurs. Embedded
s/wv energy within the parent mid level trough will bring lift
along and behind the front to produces some showers, perhaps a
rumble of thunder, across much of the forecast area by the
afternoon hours. The biggest weather hazard on Saturday will be
the winds. A strong surface pressure gradient along with a
strong wind field aloft will certainly bring Wind Advisory
conditions to the entire region (sustained winds between 25 and
35 mph and wind gusts up to 55 mph). There is a small window of
concern for our eastern/southern zones for the potential for a
few gusts to reach low end High Wind Warning criteria due to the
chance for deeper mixing from mid morning into early afternoon
before mixing heights lower. Right now, am thinking this would
be isolated. Obviously if later model runs show a longer
duration higher confidence, then an upgrade could occur. For
now, a Wind Advisory has been issued from 12Z Saturday to 22Z.
Temperatures on Saturday will lower across the west with the
east seeing rising temperatures at first then temperatures
lowering later in the day. Highs will range from near 50
northwest to the lower 60s east/southeast.

For Saturday night, low pressure and its parent mid level
trough will quickly exit our region. Windy conditions will
diminish overnight as high pressure builds into the area from
the west. Any lingering showers will depart early in the
evening, followed by clearing skies overnight. It will be colder
with lows dropping into the mid 20s to the lower 30s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Surface high pressure forming under a confluent westerly flow
aloft will provide dry weather on Sunday. Thereafter, a large
area of low pressure developing to the west will bring a
prolonged period of unsettled weather. Isentropic lift along a
warm front extending eastward from the low will be the focus for
showers and a few thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday. As the low
tracks to the Great Lakes Tuesday night and Wednesday, a cold
front will swing across the Ohio Valley, pushing a band of
showers and thunderstorms from west to east. Strong synoptic
scale winds are also likely in the tight pressure gradient
accompanying the cold front. A few showers may linger on
Thursday in diminishing moisture behind the front.

High temperatures on Sunday ranging from the low 50s north to
the upper 50s south will be a few degrees below normal. Strong
warm advection on a southerly flow will boost temperatures to
around 70 on Monday and then into the 70s Tuesday and Wednesday.
A retreat back to the mid 50s to low 60s can be expected behind
the cold front on Thursday.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
This is a very active TAF period over the next 24 hours. Low
level moisture will continue to cause MVFR ceilings through most
of the daytime hours today. Can't rule out a few isolated
storms near the Cincinnati terminals early... but most activity
will likely be showers.

There appears to be a break in the wind shear conditions through
around 00Z this evening, but the LLWS will ramp up later as a
strong front approaches from the west. Along this front, a line
of showers and thunderstorms is expected, and there will likely
be gusty surface winds near this line as it moves through. There
may be higher wind gusts with any strong to severe storms during
the 03Z to 07Z time frame... will focus the threat in the TAFs
as timing becomes more clear.

Behind the front skies will likely become VFR and wind gusts
will return to less than 30 knots; though LLWS will continue due
to higher winds just above the surface.

Starting around 13-14Z all guidance is showing strong winds
from aloft mixing down to the surface. 35-45 knot gusts are
possible at times through the end of the 24-hour TAF period.
MVFR ceilings will likely move over the TAF sites during the
extended 30-hour TAF period.

.OUTLOOK...MVFR ceilings will linger into Saturday night. MVFR
conditions become possible again Monday night into Tuesday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for East Central Indiana,
Southeast Indiana, Northeast Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, Central
Ohio, South Central Ohio, Southwest Ohio and West Central Ohio.

.DAY ONE...This afternoon and tonight.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected tonight. A few strong to
severe storms are possible, with a primary threat of damaging winds.
Isolated tornadoes are possible. Best chance for strong to severe
storms will be between 10 PM and 4 AM.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday.
