AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
Conditions briefly dry out today before a strong low pressure
system brings gusty winds and additional rain on Thursday. Some
precipitation may return on Friday before high pressure dries
out conditions for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Fog will burn off this morning as winds begin to pick up.
Surface high pressure remains in control most of the day,
keeping conditions dry. High temperatures continue to trend
above seasonal normals today. Based on latest hi-res guidance
coming in, the onset of rain ahead of the warm frontal boundary
seems more favorable after sunset.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Phase 1: Warm front lifts northward, producing a band of rain to
cross the area from south to north between ~6 PM Wednesday
through 5 AM Thursday. For now, the best chances for rain are
across the tri-state, eastern Indiana and western Ohio. While
chances for rain are in the forecast for areas to the east
(Columbus/Scioto River Valley/northern Kentucky), any
weakening of the band of rain on the eastern side will limit the
overall amounts.

Phase 2: Chances for showers continue in the forecast between 5
AM and 10 AM, however, much of this will be associated with the
upper level diffluent flow, warm-air advection, and modest
moisture advection. Most areas may stay dry during this time
window. Southeasterly winds ahead of the cold front will begin
to increase during this time frame. The Wind Advisory and
current High Wind Watch begin at 7 AM, but the wind gusts should
be sporadic in nature due to the unfavorable efficiency in
mixing. It should be noted that if a High Wind Warning were to
be issued later today, it would likely start beyond this
specific window.

Phase 3: First round of wind along and immediately behind the
cold front plus marginal risk for severe weather 10 AM through
2 PM. As is typically the case with these strong low pressure
systems, the cold front will contain convergence along the
boundary which will provide good surface lift. While instability
is negligible, any convective cell (even if slightly elevated)
that forms, could assist the transfer of potent low level winds
down to the surface. Even in the absence of convective cells,
the cold front boundary will act in a similar fashion as
localized pressure changes assist in mixing strong winds to the
surface. This feature likely provides the best opportunity for
advisory threshold winds area wide. Therefore, a Wind Advisory
has been issued for the entire area outside the High Wind Watch.

Phase 4: Second round of wind between 2 PM and 6 PM behind the
front. As the cold front and band of showers moves off to the
east, multiple hours of 45 to 55 mph winds are expected for much
of the area. The locations within the current watch area have
several factors suggesting the best chance for observing a
couple hours of 60+ mph winds. This area is climatologically
favored due to the terrain. Based on the path of the low
pressure, the responding pressure gradient will supply very
intense winds near the surface. Lastly, the cold air advection
wrapping around the low will help to supply steep low level
lapse rates increasing mixing heights. Ultimately decided to
hold on upgrading the watch to a warning to provide another
shift with another full set of guidance. Depending on this
guidance, some locations currently in the advisory may see an
upgrade to warning as well. Again, it should be noted that the
current start time of the watch at 12Z is likely too early for
warning level winds.

Wrap up: Winds should begin to taper toward the evening hours,
however, wind advisory winds could linger for several hours in
the northwest (current watch area).

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Surface low pressure will continue to lift off to the northeast
Thursday night. This will allow for a decreasing trend in the
winds and overnight lows in the mid to upper 30s. There are
still some phasing issues between the models for the upper level
trough axis that will swing east across the region Friday into
Saturday. With limited moisture, will just hang on to some
slight chance pops, primarily for Friday afternoon into Friday
night. Highs on Friday will range from the lower 40s in the
northwest to the lower 50s across our far southeast. Some cooler
air will filter into the area Friday night into Saturday with
highs on Saturday in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

Surface high pressure will build into the lower Ohio Valley and
Great Lakes region Sunday into Monday as a low pressure system
lifts northeast across the southeastern US. It looks like any
pcpn associated with this southern system should generally
remain to our southeast. Another low pressure system will move
from the mid Mississippi Valley into the Great Lakes region
through mid week. This will lead to an increasing chance of
showers for our area toward the end of the long term period.
Temperatures will slowly moderate through the first part of the
week with highs by Tuesday into the 50s.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Active second half of the taf period with the combination of a
low pressure system and strong LLJ building in. High clouds will
be the primary cloud type through the daylight hours. A warm
front will begin to lift through the region during the early
part of the night. This will lead to some light rainfall across
the terminals, along with some MVFR CIG/vsby reductions. IFR
reductions don't appear to be likely given latest guidance, but
northern terminals (KDAY/KCMH/KLCK) would be slightly more
favored for this occurrence. Winds will begin to increase
substantially after 06z tonight, shifting more towards the
southeast.

Once the warm front lifts through, there will be more breaks in
the rainfall late in the overnight period. This will change come
daybreak Thursday with an approaching cold front. This will be a
period to monitor -- the highest wind gusts are expected closer
to 18z and afterwards, but there is a possibility that wind
gusts become enhanced with the line of showers moving through
in the morning. While thunder doesn't seem likely, there still
may be convective enhancements with wind gusts in the early to
mid morning hours. MVFR CIGs still favored through Thursday
morning, with more sporadic MVFR vsbys with the rainfall.

Note that winds will continue to increase behind the cold
frontal passage when most of the rain ends. This is where gusts
could exceed 45 kts out of the southwest. Strong wind gusts will
continue into the afternoon hours.

OUTLOOK...MVFR ceilings possible through the rest of Thursday
and Thursday night. Wind gusts at or above 40 kt likely after
12Z Thursday, with LLWS possible as well. MVFR ceilings and
visibilities possible once again Friday into Saturday.
