EVENING...
* WHAT...Up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-
lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
* WHERE...The lower Cape Fear River including downtown
Wilmington.
* WHEN...Until 11 PM EDT this evening.
* IMPACTS...The lowest portions of Battleship Road and USS North
Carolina Road observe minor coastal flooding of about one foot
in depth. In downtown Wilmington, several blocks of Water
Street observe shallow flooding from one half to one foot in
depth. The low-lying areas along River Road and adjacent
residential roads, south of River Road Park, will begin to
flood. Route 133 at Little Mallory Creek may begin to flood.
Check with local officials for any road closures or impacts.

average tide conditions. Additional locations may experience
flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, high winds, or

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 750 PM EDT Tue Sep 26 2023 .SYNOPSIS... A cold front will move further south of the Carolinas through Wednesday. Breezy northeast winds with at or slightly below normal temps to follow for the remainder of the week as high pressure over Canada builds southward. Isolated showers may occur near the coast Thursday and Friday. High pressure returns this weekend. Look for temps to rebound to slightly above normal this weekend with dry conditions. && .UPDATE... Small line of showers currently settled over western Horry to Williamsburg counties, either along or just north of the stalled front. Bit of back building/training with these showers that may lead to minor flood issues in poor drainage areas, with increased cirrus cloud coverage hindering the showers from building into thunderstorms. Coastal flood advisory has expired for the local beaches. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... A mid-level impulse moving NE from the NE Gulf of Mexico will bring increasing clouds to that area tonight into Wednesday. There also could be isolated to scattered showers and a few storms southern and coastal areas, nearer the front that moved off the coast, tonight into Wednesday but much of the FA will remain dry. Lows tonight will fall to the low to mid 60s with highs Wednesday in the mid 70s. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... Prefer to stay on a dry bias during this fcst period. Mid-level 5h s/w trof over the southern Great Lakes at the start, will close off and only drift East to the Eastern Great Lakes by Fri morning, with a trof axis extending to Pensacola Fl. The reason for the slow movement E is that a decent upper ridge stands in its way. At the sfc, 1030 mb high will continually ridge/wedge S across the Carolinas while at the same time, a rather impressive inverted trof will extend offshore from the Southeast U.S. States Coast. There will be a decent sfc pg, with continuous NE winds thru the period. As the 5h Trof approaches late in the period, the inverted sfc trof gets pulled closer to the coast, but still remaining just offshore. Via various model rh time height, low levels, below 800mb stay moist thru the period with the threat for patchy light rain or isolated showers thru the period but mainly at the coastal counties and eastward to off the Carolina Coasts. The threat for fog should not be as great each night due to active NE winds but low stratus remains a good possibility. During Thu the stratus may thin out but enough moisture for diurnal Cu to occur. Temps at or a category below normal for daytime highs, with lows at or a category above the norm. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... The 5H low is progged to move from the Eastern Great Lakes to the Atlantic waters off the Mid-Atlantic Coast by Sat, with its trailing upper trof pushing off the Carolina Coasts. This in response to an expanding upper ridge across the Central U.S. pushing east. This will ignite a sfc low on the inverted sfc trof offshore from the Carolinas, pushing ENE and eventually caught by the 5H low Sun. Fri will see a repeat of Thu but a slightly better threat of POPs at the coast, still low chance. Once the 5H trof swinging off the coast, will shunt the deeper moisture away from the Carolinas, further E and S of the FA. The 5H low progged to lurking well offshore from the Carolinas slowly weakening as it turns and burns into early next week. Meanwhile,, the upper ridging will be our mainstay while at the sfc, high pressure to ridge across the Carolinas from its center over central Appalachians. This means NE flow at the sfc will continue, keeping widespread morning fog at bay but stratus and daytime Cu(vertical development limited) will be common each day. Temps will be near normal at the start of this period, increasing to atleast a category above normal by the end of this period. && .AVIATION /00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Predominantly VFR for the start of the TAF period, with some MVFR cigs across southern counties near a stalled front. Expect conditions to worsen after 4z as low stratus moves in yet again from the northeast with low level moisture trapped at the surface. Abundant high clouds overnight will hinder fog development in any areas with delayed stratus coverage. Initially MVFR ceilings will lower to near IFR, with best chance of prolonged IFR conditions across inland SE NC (KLBT). With reinforcing NE winds tomorrow and a solid cloud deck in place, stratus will likely linger for most of Wednesday, especially at LBT and ILM, though ceilings are forecasted to rise to above 2kft by midday. Extended Outlook...VFR conditions to dominate through the period. MVFR conditions from BR or isolated shower by midweek as a wedge of high pressure sets up across the interior Carolinas along with weak low pressure off the Coast. && .MARINE... Through Wednesday...NE to E winds of 10 to 15 KT will become mainly NE at 15 to 20 KT by Wednesday afternoon. Seas of 2 to 3 feet this afternoon will build to 3 to 5 feet by Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday Night through Sunday... For Wed night thru Fri, the FA will be sandwiched between ridging from the north across the central carolinas and an inverted sfc trof offshore and parallel to the Carolinas. The will result in a pinched gradient with active NE winds across the waters thru Fri. Seas will be on the cusp of SCA, especially south of Cape Fear where the fetch is better. Overall, seas should run 3 to 5 ft with periods at 6 to 8 seconds bordering on a fresh/pseudo swell status. Fri night thru the weekend, an upper low well offshore from Midatlantic States will drop south to well offshore from the Carolinas. Sfc low having developed on the inverted sfc trof will get caught by the upper low during the weekend and basically churn and burn well offshore. This will result in continued NE winds thru the period, possibly reaching SCA gust thresholds. Seas will also be bordering SCA especially across the NC waters, generally Cape Fear north. Globalwave models indicate a 10+ second period ENE-E swell from the well offshore low will likely help push seas to SCA thresholds across the aforementioned area. && .ILM WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
