Area Forecast Discussion UPDATE National Weather Service Hanford CA 439 PM PST Sat Feb 25 2023 .Update to Air Quality Issues Section... .SYNOPSIS...The large low pressure system which bought widespread precipitation the the area Friday and today will will move out of the area tonight. Drier weather will prevail on Sunday then another low pressure system will bring more rain and mountain snow to the area on Monday through Wednesday. Cool and dry conditions will prevail on Thursday and Friday. && .DISCUSSION...A large cold upper low pressure system currently centered off the Socal coast continues to pull moisture through Socal and into our area today with radar composites showing widespread showers over Tulare, Kings and Fresno Counties. This after numerous daily precipitation records for February 24 were shattered across our area with many stations in the San Joaquin Valley picking up between 1.5 and 3 inches of rainfall and several feet of new snowfall over the mountains with numerous road closures as a result. There were even some reports of light snowfall in portions of the San Joaquin Valley this morning. Meanwhile, the SREF is indicating the upper low will move east and cross Socal tonight. Showers and even isolated thunderstorms will be possible through early this evening then the precipitation will taper off by early Sunday as the low moves east of our area and shifts into the four corners region. A weak shortwave system is then progged to move through central CA late Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening brining a chance of light precipitation into our area by late Sunday afternoon with the snow level between 3000 and 3500 feet. A stronger system is then progged to follow between late Monday and early Wednesday as a large trough pushes across the PAC NW and Norcal. This system is expected to bring another round of significant precipitation to our area with the Sierra Nevada expected to pick up another 3 to 5 inches of liquid precipitation while the Sierra foothills are progged to pick up 1 to 3 inches of liquid precipitation and the San Joaquin Valley is progged to pick up another half inch to an inch of rainfall. This system is also expected to be a cold one with snow levels ranging from 3000 to 3500 feet at the onset on Monday lowering to 1500 to 2000 feet by Wednesday. Medium range ensembles are in fairly good agreement with shortwave ridging prevailing over CA on Thursday and Friday resulting in dry but cool conditions across our area. Another cold upper trough is progged to drop into the PAC NW next Saturday and into CA by the end of next weekend likely providing our area with another round of rain and mountain snow. && .AVIATION...In the San Joaquin Valley and West Side Hills, widespread MVFR conditions in low clouds with local IFR in low clouds and mist. In the Sierra Nevada, Tehachapi Mountains and adjacent foothills widespread mountain obscuring IFR conditions in precipitation through this evening and low clouds afterwards.
