Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 356 PM HST Tue Feb 7 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Shower activity will diminish tonight as moderate to locally breezy trade winds hold. Trade winds will ramp up on Wednesday and will be strong and gusty through Friday before slowly easing during the weekend. && .DISCUSSION... Moisture will diminish across most islands this evening as breezy trade winds hold through the night. A surface ridge several hundred miles north of the islands will weaken, but as high pressure far northwest moves toward the central Pacific, little change in local winds are expected. The narrow band of low level moisture in the trade wind flow produced less than a quarter of rainfall from windward Kauai to Molokai today, but a lingering upper level trough to the east generated enough instability to trigger some heavy showers over windward Big Island and Maui, where three quarters of an inch to 2 inches of rain was measured during the past 12 hours. The moisture is already diminishing on most islands, but expect somewhat wet conditions to persist through the evening on windward Big Island, along with a few heavy showers along leeward Big Island slopes. Trade winds will ramp up on Wednesday and will likely remain strong and gusty through Friday. Trades will strengthen significantly Wednesday afternoon and Thursday night as surface high pressure passing 800 miles north of the state builds to 1035 mb. Over the islands, 850 mb winds will increase to around 35 kt as a mid level ridge produces an inversion between 5,000 and 7,000 feet. As a result, winds over and downwind of terrain should become strong and gusty, and a Wind Advisory has been issued starting at noon. The robust surface high will build further as it drifts eastward Thursday night and Friday, and with 850 mb winds possibly increasing under continued mid level ridging, the Wind Advisory will remain in effect. A drier air mass will settle of the region as the trade winds increase on Wednesday. This would suggest a general decrease in shower activity, but as mixing in the lowest portion of the atmosphere is combined with good orographic forcing, expect some windward rainfall with light showers occasionally being pushed leeward. Looking ahead to the weekend, trades will likely be breezy but should drop a notch as the surface ridge north of the state erodes. With trades blowing, showers will favor windward slopes, but troughing at the mid levels of the atmosphere could lead to increased instability and some shower enhancement. However, available low level moisture to fuel these showers remains uncertain. && .AVIATION... Breezy northeast trade winds will remain in place today and will strengthen tomorrow. Scattered light to moderate showers which are currently affecting windward locations of the State will decrease tonight as drier air moves in from the northeast. This will likely end the AIRMET Sierra in effect for the windward areas of Maui, Molokai, Oahu, and Kauai. However moisture should still linger over the Big Island through tonight, therefore the AIRMET Sierra currently in affect for windward Big Island will likely remain in place. AIRMET Tango will remain in place for low level turbulence over and downwind of island terrain during the next several days. && .MARINE... A large surface high centered far northeast of the islands is producing fresh to locally strong trade winds across the Hawaiian waters. Another high to the northwest will pass just north of the state tomorrow, while gradually strengthening, then linger northeast of the state Thursday into into the weekend. Trades will gradually strengthen to strong to locally gale force by tomorrow and persist through Friday. The Small Craft Advisory (SCA) remains in effect through tonight into tomorrow morning for strong trades across the typical windy waters around Maui County and the Big Island, as well as the windward Oahu and Maui waters. A Gale Warning has been issued starting 12 PM HST Wednesday through 6 PM HST Friday for the typical windy waters around Maui County and the Big Island. The SCA will also expand to all remaining waters during this time due to building seas and strengthening winds. The current northwest (310-320 degree) will hold into tomorrow, before fading Thursday. A north-northwest (340-350 degrees) swell is expected to arrive Thursday, with surf building near High Surf Advisory levels for north facing shores as it peaks into the evening. This swell will decline Friday into the weekend. Above average, rough sea conditions can be anticipated along eastern shores into the weekend in response to the strengthen trades over and upstream of the area. Surf heights may even reach advisory levels as early as Thursday through Saturday. Background south swells will keep south facing shore surf minimal through the week.
