Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED

.SYNOPSIS...
Temperatures remain above average through today and across the
far south Friday as ridging builds along the East Coast. A
strong cold front crosses the area on Friday, bringing an end to
the near record warmth. Mixed precipitation is foreseen tonight
in the mountains, and then for the rest of the area Friday.
High pressure moves through New England this weekend, with
temperatures warming up again late this weekend and early next
week. A generally unsettled pattern is expected early next week,
with a more significant system possible in the middle to later
portion of the week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1130 AM Update: Further adjustments to near term temperatures/
dewpoints but no significant changes as we near the noontime
hour as high cloudiness begins to encroach on the region from
the southwest.

920 AM Update: Have surpassed the record high at PWM last
hour...reaching 53F already (Previous record 51/1981). Forecast
is in good shape and made some near term adjustments to match
temperature trends with a very spring like day ongoing before
winter returns from the north beginning to night spreading
south through the forecast area Friday.

650 AM Update...No changes other than to cancel the the wind
advisory as the core of the LLJ has exited the advisory area.

Previously...

Wind advisory remains in effect for the eastern slopes of the
Whites and western ME mountains as inversion continues to drop
toward mountain top levels. This should facilitate strong
downslope winds this morning. However, these winds should be
relegated to the east slopes of the mountains only, i.e, they
don't spread downstream much more than that. Once mixing
commences elsewhere there should be some 25 MPH gusts this
morning elsewhere which will diminish this afternoon.

Temperatures will be the big story today as it will be warm.
Temperatures across eastern Massachusetts are already in the mid
to upper 50s. In fact some locations in our forecast area, as
far north as the White Mountains with middling elevation are
already in the 50s. With little in the way of air mass change
today, have gone above most guidance with respect to highs
today as even modest mixing should easily allow the temps to
jump appreciably. Went close to the NBM 90th percentile for
highs which brings 60s to portions of southern NH and 50s
elsewhere outside the highest elevations. See climate section
below for record temp data.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
A short wave trough will approach from the west this evening
allow for sufficient ascent for showers to develop from west to
east this evening. At the same time, low level cold air will
begin oozing southward into the mountains and foothills. The
result will be any rain changing to snow, sleet, and freezing
rain in these areas overnight with slippery travel expected by
early Friday morning.

As low pressure develops over southern New England on Friday,
the low level cold airmass will continue sagging southward.
Precipitation should increase in intensity Friday morning as the
forcing for ascent intensifies. The result will be rain changing
to mixed precipitation from north to south as the day
progresses, with sub-freezing SFC air likely making it to the
immediate coast and portions of southernmost NH by late in the
day. Slippery travel is expected for most zones by Friday
afternoon and especially the afternoon/evening commute as frozen
or freezing precipitation is expected for most locations by 21z
Friday afternoon. Will likely have to extend the advisory
southward a good ways south of the current one once the speed of
the front edge of the SFC sub-freezing air is a little more
certain. Northerly winds are expected to increase and gust
around 30 MPH Friday afternoon as the cold air pours southward
making for a rather nasty afternoon and early evening.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Overview...

A brief period of colder air arrives behind the frontal
boundary Friday night, with high pressure setting up over New
England for the weekend. Temperatures quickly start to moderate
above normal by Sunday as the high moves offshore, with
seasonably warm conditions expected early next week. Several
weak disturbances bring the threat of rain or snow showers at
times early next week, with the best chance on Monday. The best
chance for a more significant system likely wouldn't arrive
until at least midweek next week.

Details...

Colder air continues pouring into the area Friday night behind
the cold front as the low pressure moves away from the area.
Gusty northwesterly winds gradually ease through the late
evening, with any lingering snow showers or mixed precip also
expected to wind down through the late evening. Any untreated
surfaces could quickly become slick with flash freeze conditions
possible Friday evening.

By later overnight, a seasonably cool night is expected with
lows falling into the teens and single digits. This will be the
short-lived extent of the cold however, with temperatures
rebounding to near of just above normal on Saturday. The ridge
axis associated with the high pressure center crosses New
England by late in the day on Saturday, with WAA already
underway Saturday night leading to lows mainly in the 20s to mid
teens.

By Sunday temperatures rebound into the 40s in most spots with
a mix of sun and clouds. Mild conditions continue into early
next week with highs in the 40s to near 50.

An area of low pressure is expected to move through southern
Quebec during the day on Monday, with a weak coastal low likely
developing during the afternoon on Monday. The front associated
with the primary low brings the chance for showers during the
day, but the coastal low brings a better chance for some
steadier light rain, especially across eastern areas. There
remains a considerable amount of spread amongst the models with
the coastal feature. The GFS and it's ensembles are mainly out
to sea, the Canadian is the most robust with significant
rainfall for central and eastern Maine, while the Euro has a
more modest a realistic looking widespread light rain for most
central and eastern areas. There has been a gradual trend toward
a wetter solution with this feature, so this trend will need to
continue to be monitored over the next couple days. This
forecast keeps with high chance/low-likely for POPs with this
feature.

Afterwards, a generally mild and showery pattern continues into
the middle of next week. A system for Wednesday that had been
on most of the long range models for several days has gradually
trended to be less impressive over the last few runs, but
remains the next chance for more widespread precipitation across
the area. With this still being almost a week away, we will
continue to monitor it accordingly. Another one may then be hot
on its heels for the end of next week.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Short Term...

Summary: Low pressure approaches the region from the west tonight
and crosses over the area on Friday bringing deteoriorating
conditions with rain changing to a wintry mix before ending Friday
evening with improving conditions Friday night.

Restrictions: VFR attm will continue through this evening with
deterioration through the categories to LIFR/IFR towards daybreak
Friday with these restrictions continuing in rain and fog Friday
morning before preciptation changes to a wintry mix or snow
before ending Friday afternoon/evening with improvement to VFR
Friday night. AUG will likley see precipitation start as a
wintry mix before ending as a brief period of snow.

Winds: West winds 5-15kts this afternoon will diminish this evening
and shift to northeasterly and remain less than 10kts through early
Friday before slowly shifting northwest and increasing to 15G25kts
Friday evening with these gusty northwest winds slowly diminishing
overnight.

LLWS: LLWS is not expected through Friday night.

Snowfall Rate / Character: No snow expected through 18Z Friday.
Beyond this...a brief period of light snow is possible as
precipitation ends Friday evening with little in the way of
accumulation.

Lightning: A few isolated rumbles of thunder are possible after
midnight through Friday morning.

Long Term...Snow showers and gusty northwest winds to 25kts
ease late Friday evening, with generally VFR conditions then
expected late Friday night through Sunday. IFR conditions and
showers are possible on Monday. Mainly VFR conditions are likely
Monday night through Tuesday night, but some MVFR ceilings or
restrictions in fog are possible with a mild and unsettled
pattern early next week. Rain or snow is then possible on
Wednesday, depending on the track of a storm system.

.MARINE...
Short Term...Southwesterly winds up to 30 kts will continue
through early this morning with seas of 4-7 ft across the outer
waters. Winds will then largely remain below 25 kts later
today and tonight before increasing again early Friday
afternoon in the wake of a cold front.

Long Term...SCA conditions are likely, and low end gales
possible, with northerly winds Friday night. Conditions ease on
Saturday as high pressure crosses the waters, with southwesterly
winds then freshening Saturday night. After easing on Sunday,
southerly winds increase ahead of an approaching cold front,
with gales possible late Sunday night and Monday.
