.SYNOPSIS...
Chances for mainly light rainfall persist over the area today,
peaking as a cold front crosses the region. Gusty southwest winds
can also be expected ahead of the cold front during the day, and
continuing into tonight particularly at high elevations. Surface
high pressure then returns Friday into Saturday before a Gulf low
lifts northeast into the region increasing precipitation chances
Saturday night into Sunday night.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 250 AM: Sfc low pressure centered over IL/IN is supported
by upper low centered in KS/NE. Cold front extends southward near
the Mississippi River. A narrow band of heavy rain is seen on
radar over Middle TN and NW AL and will continue eastward this
morning, seemingly being boosted by a pocket of upper level
divergence seen on model progs. Warm front will shift across
the CWA early this morning; isentropic upglide with that feature
should peak in magnitude prior to daybreak. Areas of drizzle and
a few embedded showers are shifting northeast across the CWA,
now primarily occurring over the NC zones. Dense fog may at least
briefly develop in the wake of the precip, but with winds picking
up a few kt within the effective warm sector of the approaching
system, it has been unable to set in on a large enough scale to
warrant a Dense Fog Advisory.

The warm front should be north of the CWA soon after sunrise, and
per CAM consensus, the narrow band of rain should reach the SW NC
mountains by 9-10 AM. The aforementioned upper level divergence
is depicted as shifting northward along the front, such that
its support of the sfc front will weaken by the time the precip
reaches the mountains. Guidance has continued to show precip rates
diminishing as the band enters the CWA and especially once it pushes
east of the mountains. Furthermore, our PoPs still appeared a little
broad in light of the current appearance of radar and good agreement
of CAMs. With this package, extent of categorical PoPs has been
trimmed back to roughly the western third of the CWA, with values
remaining no better than likely across the middle longitudes, and
then only chance in the I-77 corridor. Values also taper off more
quickly on the back side, and most of the CWA will be free of PoP
by 00z. Thunder chance still looks too small to mention; profiles
are just too warm in the midlevels to warrant a slight-chance,
but a rumble or two might be heard across the region. Temps today
will be 10-15 degrees above normal in general, pushing 70 along
our the southeastern border; windy conditions tonight should limit
radiational cooling despite mostly clear skies, and mins should
remain several degrees above normal. Flurries or rime icing could
be seen along the northern TN/NC border.

Per regional VAD winds, 850 mb winds are already on the order of
40 kt across the CWA, and should peak closer to 50 kt at midday. By
that time the actual front should be near our western border; onset
of CAA should encourage mixing of strong winds to the surface. The
current extent of Wind Advisory, in the higher elevations of SW
NC, looks good thru the morning for the possibility of sustained
winds > 30 kt in those areas. By afternoon, the concern will be
more in terms of the gust potential. By evening even some lower
elevations are likely to see gusts near or above 40 kt. The Wind
Advisory will effectively expand throughout the NC mountain zones
(plus northern foothills) at 21z, and remain through Friday morning.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 130 AM Thursday...A broad ulvl trof continues to pull north of
the area early Fri replaced by an incoming h5 ridge thru Sat. This
ridge will bring a lowering subs inversion and deeply dry air thru
the column with PWATS hovering arnd 0.20 inches. Some upper clouds
will pass each day, but mainly expect mostly sunny conds. The
stronger high elevation wind gusts will weaken thru the day Fri as
the p/grad loosens and CAA wanes, however, still expect low to
moderate gusts across the NC mtn valleys and peaks into the
afternoon. High temps will reach a few degrees abv normal Fri with a
measure of downslope warming east of the mtns. On Sat winds ahead of
of an incoming sfc high will shift n/ly and hold max temps right
arnd normal.

The column begins to saturate Sat night ahead of a warm front and
expect precip to begin across the srn zones aft midnight then
become widespread across the FA before daybreak. The latest guidance
is still in general agreement with the thermal profiles ahead of
this system, which features an insitu sfc wedge becoming a little
stronger in diabatic cooling. This pattern will likely hold sfc-
layer temps below freezing across nrn NC mtns, while temps drop
below freezing diurnally across the srn and central NC mtns. Expect
light snow over the srn mtns before a warm advective layer aloft
reaches the area and produces a wintry mix of -fzra/sn or
predominant -fzra across the nrn mtns into mid day Sun. Still not
expecting much snow, around an inch or so in the higher elevations,
yet ice accums look to total a couple tenths. The going model trends
keep confidence abv average on wintry precip occurring and if this
holds up over the next couple days, a winter weather advisory would
be warranted or perhaps even an ice storm warning with any modest
uptick in moist adv or an earlier warm nose development. Any frozen
precip shud change over to rain by the afternoon as the WAA layer
descends and increases sfc temps abv freezing across all locales.
Sunday will not be a great day across the rest of the FA either as a
llvl thermal trof and precip hold temps in the low to mid 40s
outside the higher mtn elevations.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 255 AM Thursday...The ext range looks to remain active as
another srn stream system is progged to move into the fcst area
by Tue. Before that, lingering precip will be maintained across
the NC mtns in wrap-around moisture from the previous storm.
The higher elevations of the NC mtns will be cold enuf to
support snow, however, amts currently look to remain rather low-
end as the flow within the moist layer remains w/ly until arnd
06z before it shifts nw/ly and mech lift is increased. In any
regard to available llvl lift, overall moisture levels will be
decreasing as another cP sfc high works in from the west arnd
18z Mon.

This high will cross the area rather swiftly Mon and potentially set
up another pattern similar to the previous one. A pattern featuring a
highly moist Miller-B warm front interacting with and strengthening
an area of instu cold air damming. Early profiles show deep
saturation with a developing warm nose across the sub-freezing NC
mtns by Tue night. Thus, snow and -fzra will once again be possible
over the nrn NC escarpment areas during this time, while light snow
possibly lingers across the wrn NC/TN border areas thru most of Wed.
There is moderate uncertainty with the timing of the warm front as
the GFS system is abt 12 hrs faster than the other op models. So,
the expected precip amts and p/types will be better gauged as we
near the event. Temps are anticipated to be near or a little below
normal thru the period.

.AVIATION /09Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Low stratus is widespread over the region in
warm upglide ahead of an approaching cold front, along with light
precip too shallow to be depicted well by radar. Precip is likely to
induce IFR cigs (or worse) at all sites, with KAVL most in question
due to downsloping off the ridges S and SW of the field. Precip
may diminish to -DZ or end completely toward daybreak, and cigs
could improve to IFR or low MVFR. Any improvement is likely to be
short-lived, with front reaching the SW NC mountains by midday. MVFR
to IFR SHRA will be possible along the front, though frontal forcing
will be in a diminishing state and coverage may prove increasingly
sparse as it tracks across the region. Thus carrying IFR only in
PROB30 at KCLT. A TS is still not out of the question although
chance remains much too low to mention. Drying will occur from
west to east in the afternoon restoring VFR at all sites. Strong
LLJ winds will ride over the region early this morning, prompting
LLWS mention at KAVL/KHKY, and gusts at all sites later this
morning. Peak gusts appear likely to be near 30 kt this afternoon.

Outlook: High pressure builds in behind the front with continued
improving conditions Friday night through Saturday. Another system
likely brings precip and restrictions on Sunday with dry high
pressure returning for Monday.
