.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will move off the Carolina coast early tonight
ushering in much drier conditions to start off the work week. Dry
conditions and below normal temperatures should linger through most
of the week. Expect chances for rain to increase again next weekend
with temperatures returning to normal for this time of year.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 800 pm EDT: The passing cold front is slipping east of the
Charlotte Metro area at this hour and will continue to advance east
across the NC Piedmont through the evening. The forecast has been
updated to maintain isolated to scattered showers east of I-77 for a
couple more hours this evening before fropa and better drying occurs
from the west. Scattered westerly upslope showers in the NC
mountains will also return from eastern Tennessee this evening and
PoPs will be maintained along the higher ridges and near the
immediate TN border for several hours. Some high elevation snow
showers area starting to mix in already, with temperatures along the
peaks now dipping into the 30s. No accumulations are expected
tonight expect along the very highest ridges - and those will be
light. Winds will be the other concern, with briefly deep mixing
permitting some gusts above 30 mph early this evening. This will
quickly diminish east of the mountains with the loss of mixing after
sundown. Mountain winds, however, will be gusty through the
nighttime hours, with cold advection and 850 mb flow around 40 kt.
Anticipate most gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range, but higher ridges
could certainly see some 40 to 50 mph gusts at times. This generally
means that advisory gusts will be confined to just the peaks, so no
wind advisory will be posted at present, but this will need to be
monitored in case overnight mixing brings gusts down into the
valleys. Also, no frost is expected given the wind, and only the
highest peaks will see freezing temperatures.

The upslope precipitation potential should diminish early on Monday.
The cyclonic flow aloft will keep the boundary layer stirred up as
high pressure slowly edges in. We should expect frequent wind gusts
through the day with temperatures running on the order of 10 degrees
below normal.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 155 PM EDT Sunday: A large and highly anomalous upper low will
continue to remain centered over the Great Lakes region with
cyclonic flow entrenched across the eastern half of the CONUS. This
will keep a dry and cool airmass locked in across the area with
temperatures running 10-15 degrees below average. Winds will also be
quite breezy, especially on Tuesday as forecast soundings indicate
deep mixing up to nearly 700mb. Resulting momentum transfer will
support 30-40kt gusts across much of the area with higher gusts
across the high elevations where a wind advisory may eventually be
warranted. While the airmass will remain dry, an embedded piece of
shortwave energy diving into the area Tuesday night will interact
with an associated pocket of moisture which may result in an uptick
in northwest flow showers along the Tennessee border. Given cold
temperatures a few snow showers cannot be completely discounted,
especially above 5,000ft, but little to no snow accumulations are
expected. The upper low will gradually shift east on Wednesday, but
another bout of cool air spilling into the area will continue to
keep temperatures well below normal for early May.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 215 PM EDT Sunday: An omega block will become established
across the Great Plains by late week as broad troughing extends down
the east coast while the western trough reloads. This will leave an
amplified ridge centered across the heart of the country with broad
northwest flow across the Appalachians. Temperatures will begin to
moderate and return to near normal as the anomalous upper low and
associated cold airmass pull away from the region. The 12z suite of
global guidance continues to depict a wave sliding underneath the
omega block and potentially interacting with a clipper diving in
from the northwest late week into the start of next weekend. This
could bring a return of rain chances, but guidance diverges with
respect to timing and how long moisture may linger. Moisture return
would also have to ramp up and overcome the dry antecedent airmass
to support greater rain chances. Therefore, will keep the forecast
in line with the national model blend for now until guidance comes
into better agreement.

.AVIATION /00Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Rogue showers just north of the KCLT airfield
along the passing cold front will require a brief VCSH early this
evening. Otherwise, anticipate dry conditions throughout as the cold
front moves east of the terminal area. Gusty westerly winds will be
the primary concern, with flow remaining just south of west until
sundown and then toggling more WNW later this evening with gusts
abating east of the mountains. Mountain gusts will remain fairly
strong overnight in the cold advection flow, with up to G30KT
possible at times at KAVL. Any northwest flow showers impinging on
the NC mountains overnight should remain well northeast of KAVL.
Gusts to near 30 kt will return throughout on Monday with dry mixing
in the west to northwest to flow.

Outlook: Dry and cool weather, with VFR conditions, will prevail
through most of the week.
