.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moves off the Carolina coast today as chances for
showers and a few storms increase from late today through Saturday
morning. Very windy conditions will develop behind the front
Saturday into early Sunday. Dry weather returns for Sunday then more
chances for rain expected ahead of the next cold front which will
arrive from the west during the middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 1000 AM Friday: Extensive mid clouds are slowing the temps
a bit, but otherwise, the forecast is on track. Updated the wind
and wind gusts with latest guidance and will make a decision on
the High Wind Watch for the noon update. Meanwhile...some shower
activity was moving across east TN and north GA is on a downward
trend, and this is in the PoP grids.

After this initial precip moves past and/or dissipates, the balance
of the day should be relatively quiet across most of the fcst area,
or at least most of the area east of the mtns. With the axis of a
broad and flat upper ridge off the Eastern Seaboard and sfc high
pressure offshore of the Carolinas, moisture should gradually
return to our region thru the day, but it may take until the
mid/late afternoon before we develop much in the way of shower
activity over the southerly upslope areas. High temps should end
up a few degrees above yesterday as warm advection improves this
afternoon. Precip probs will be kept in the chance range mainly
over the mtns from the afternoon thru the late evening to account
for this steadily-improving upslope flow.

At this point, it doesn't appear that the main precip associated
with the approaching cold front will reach the fcst area before
midnight, but precip probs go up quickly from 06Z onward based on
the CAM guidance. The consensus is that a broken band of showers
and a few thunderstorms will move east across at least the mtns
in the pre-dawn hours, with the leading edge perhaps reaching
Anderson/GSP/Hickory at daybreak Saturday. The first concern
is the severe weather potential. There is some indication that
a robust convective line will try to make a run at the NC/TN
border, but once again as in last week's example, we lose most
of the sfc-based instability before the line would get to NC,
thus limiting the potential beyond perhaps the counties on the TN
border. A few strong/severe gusts would not be unexpected there,
but the depiction in the various CAMs that make up the HREF looks
not particularly impressive at this time. Winds pick up with this
convection, but not yet to the point where we would reach even
Advisory level over the higher terrain.

We will employ a high precip prob as what is left of the band of
convective precip moves east across the Piedmont of the Carolinas
and northeast Georgia on Saturday morning. Guidance indicates
the convection should make quick eastward progress and then
should exit the fcst area in the early afternoon. Confidence is
low regarding the severe weather potential east of the mtns on
Saturday morning. Timing is poor as we may not destabilize much
at all before the line makes it off to our east. It would take
a model solution even slower than the NAM to hold the potential
over the eastern zones, and that seems unlikely. The next concern
is the potential for high winds. The new model guidance suggests
a lull in the low level winds in the wake of the passage of the
convective precip Saturday morning, such that our gust potential
doesn't really pick up until maybe the mid/late afternoon similar
to the last event. With that in mind, we will ride with the High
Wind Watch for this fcst cycle and see if the next model run gives
more clarity and confidence.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 200 AM Friday: Winds will remain elevated Saturday night,
especially across the mountains as CAA continues to filter in
behind the departing cold front and the leading edge of a surface
high sliding in from the west. Expect dry and cooler conditions
as a result as the mountains will likely drop into the mid to low
30s, with freeze conditions possible, mainly at elevations above
3500'. Locations outside of the mountains should remain near-normal,
with frost/freeze conditions not expected to be a concern. Surface
high will set up shop across the CFWA on Sunday as the upper trough
axis shifts offshore and quasi-zonal flow aloft builds in over the
eastern-third of the CONUS. Vertical profiles depict a very dry
sounding for Sunday, which indicates very low RH values (20-30%)
will be possible across the CFWA and thus, fire weather conditions
will uptick. Fire Danger Statements will most likely be needed,
especially in northeast Georgia. Luckily, the pressure gradient will
relax with the surface high over the area, so conditions should
remain below Red Flag Warning criteria. Expect high temperatures
on Sunday to be near-normal for most locations.

Surface high quickly pushes offshore Sunday night as an embedded
shortwave develops within the quasi-zonal flow aloft, and travels
across the Deep South and into the Southeast. Decent return flow
will filter into the area, ahead of the incoming shortwave and could
develop a few showers on the southwest fringe of the CFWA by the
end of the forecast period. Mid- to high-level clouds may enter
the CFWA in response and could alter low temperatures slightly,
but still expect values to be near- to a few ticks above normal,
depending on how extensive the overall cloud cover is.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 230 AM Friday: Outside of a few passing showers in our
western zones, the sensible weather on Monday seems mostly tranquil
across the area. The flow aloft gradually becomes more amplified by
Monday night into Tuesday as upper ridging begins nosing into the
Southeast, in response to a digging upper low the slides across the
Great Basin. Deep layer southwesterly flow will begin to filter into
the CFWA as a result. The upper ridge should shift offshore by the
middle part of the week as a few shortwaves ride within the extended
area of southwesterly flow aloft. Expect enough moisture advection
to go along with weak upper forcing and isentropic lift to allow for
chance PoPs to meander in the forecast from Tuesday into Wednesday,
especially across the mountains and the Upper Savannah region.
Better frontal forcing arrive Wednesday night into Thursday as the
upper low lifts into the Northern Great Plains and the trailing
frontal boundary encroaches from the west-northwest. In this case,
PoPs will linger into the end of the work week as model guidance
struggle to produce a clean fropa across the CFWA. The frontal
boundary becomes quasi-stationary over the area or just south of the
CFWA. With multiple embedded shortwaves riding along this boundary
under quasi-zonal flow aloft, expect for the synoptic pattern to
become unsettled by the latter half of the forecast period. Any
severe threat will vary based on the arrival time of the front and
how much upper support the embedded shortwaves can produce with each
passing blow. For now, confidence is low on any severe threat, but
it's Spring after all. Temperatures will be on an upward trend
Monday through Wednesday as most locations could reach up to 10-15
degrees above-normal by Wednesday. With an active pattern underway
and extensive cloud cover, temperatures should slightly modify
Thursday, while values remain 5-10 degrees above-normal.

.AVIATION /15Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: VFR thru 06Z at all terminals. A passing
shower could impact some of the terminals this morning, but should
not impact vis significantly. Clouds will increase thru the day,
but cloud bases should stay up at mid-levels. Wind should veer from
SE to S or SSW early this morning as high pressure moves away to
the east and we feel the approach of the next weather system. Won't
rule out a few gusts this afternoon. Some shower activity could
start to develop this afternoon/evening in the southerly upslope
areas, but overall most places are likely to stay dry. Low clouds
will arrive with a band of showers after 09Z Saturday, so most
terminals get an MVFR ceiling restriction along with gusty SW
wind. This CAMs are in agreement that a band of showers will move
thru KCLT during the middle part of the day on Saturday.

Outlook: Restrictions will be likely with precip chances primarily
Saturday morning. A line of showers and possibly a few strong storms
will cross the area with a cold front Saturday morning. Very gusty
west to southwest winds expected behind the front from late morning
thru Saturday aftn. Dry high pressure returns Sunday, but precip
chances may return as soon as Monday.
