...NEXT ROUND OF WINTRY WEATHER APPROACHES...

.A second round of snow will arrive for tonight, as precipitation 
transitions over to a wintry mix from north-central WI 
southeastwards. Snow totals will be highest across far northern WI. 
Initial snow will likely be heavy and wet before gradually becoming 
relatively lighter as cold air pushes in from the northeast. 
Increasing winds overnight will likely create blowing and drifting 
snow, especially towards Saturday morning. A fairly sharp cutoff in 
snow totals is expected on the southern end of this system, mainly 
just northwest of the Fox Valley.

.Rain or a wintry mix will change to snow from northwest to 
southeast overnight. A band of heavy snow will set up across north 
central and far northeast Wisconsin, with less snow farther south.  
Strong north winds gusting to 45 mph will cause considerable blowing 
and drifting snow later tonight into Saturday morning, especially in 
open areas of north central and far northeast Wisconsin. A sharp

.SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Saturday
Issued at 352 AM CDT Fri Mar 31 2023

Freezing rain and snow will continue across far Northern Wisconsin
until surface temperatures warm above freezing by mid morning.
Will keep the current Winter Storm Warning going until then. A new
Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisories will be issued
later today to replace the current Winter Storm Watch.

Otherwise, warm and moist air overrunning a surface warm front
moving slowly north will produce periods of rain and a chance of
thunderstorms today. If the warm front makes it into the Southern
Fox Valley this afternoon or evening there could be a few
thunderstorms with hail as temperatures aloft are still cold at
this time of the year. The rain and melting snow could produce
minor street flooding in Central and East central Wisconsin during
periods of heavy rain.

The rain will change to snow from northwest to southeast tonight
as the upper low approaches and temperatures aloft cool. Strong
low level warm advection and convergence, combined with a coupled
jet aloft should produce a band of heavy snow across the northwest
two thirds of the forecast area. the reminder of the area will
get lighter snow.

While the snow will initially be wet, gusty north winds later tonight
and Saturday could produce blowing and drifting snow across the
Northwoods. Some tree branches and power lines could come down due
to the weight of ice and snow and the strong winds.

The snow should end quickly from west to east late tonight and
Saturday morning, but the gusty winds will continue into the
afternoon.

.LONG TERM...Saturday Night Through Thursday

Mean flow to briefly turn zonal this weekend before the next
significant upper trough dives southeast into the western CONUS
Monday, then turns northeast and reaches the Great Lakes by the
middle of the next week. The associated surface low is forecast to
track to our west which would bring rain showers/potential
thunderstorms to northeast WI. An open gulf could bring another
swath of locally heavy rain and aggravate any localized flooding
from this current system. Temperatures for the most part to be at
or above normal for the first half of the week, then trend below
normal.

Saturday night and Sunday...
High pressure will move toward the eastern Great Lakes region
Saturday night with a return flow already underway over WI after
midnight. Onset of WAA to our west could bring an increase in high
clouds into central WI before daybreak. Anticipate temperatures to
tank across northern WI due to fresh snow cover and light winds.
Look for min temperatures to range from 5 to 10 above zero over
our typical cold spots north, upper teens to lower 20s south. This
push of WAA, coupled with a mid-level shortwave moving through the
mean flow across northern sections of the Great Lakes, will bring
a chance of light morning snow and light rain/snow mix to
northern WI on Sunday. Cannot rule out a few stray rain or snow
shower across central/east-central WI, but nothing of consequence.
Even across the north, any limited accumulation would melt as
temperatures rise into the upper 30s to around 40 degrees. For
central/east-central WI, max temperatures to reach the middle 40s
to around 50 degrees (warmer values west of the Fox Valley).

Sunday night and Monday...
Low pressure is forecast to move across southern Ontario and help
to pull a cold front across WI Sunday night. Models show limited
lift associated with the cold front and any mid-level forcing to
remain to our north through the night, thus do not have any
precipitation in the forecast. Under partly to mostly cloudy
skies, min temperatures to range from the upper 20s north-central
WI, to the middle 30s over east-central WI. A weak disturbance is
expected to move along a quasi-stationary front draped across
central sections of IL and IN on Monday. It appears that most if
not all the associated precipitation would remain to our south,
therefore have reduced pops over central/east-central WI. Max
temperatures to be in the middle 40s north, upper 40s to lower 50s
south.

Monday night and Tuesday...
Attention then turns to the central Plains where the next early
Spring storm to be strengthening. Clouds will be on the increase
Monday night with a surge of isentropic lift and gulf moisture
overspreading northeast WI by Tuesday afternoon. Depending on the
thermal profiles, northern WI could see snow or a wintry mix at
the onset with more of a rain/snow mix thereafter. There could
also be a few rumbles of thunder in the afternoon over central and
east-central WI. Max temperatures to be around 40 degrees north,
around 50 degrees over our southern tier of counties.

Tuesday night and Wednesday...
The strong surface low is progged to lift north-northeast from the
Midwest to the Upper MS Valley Tuesday night with showers/possible
thunderstorms preceding the passage of an occluded front. Behind
this front, models show that a dry slot will sweep into WI later
Tuesday night and diminish the precipitation. Depending on the
timing/location of this dry slot, anticipate winds to really crank
up late Tuesday night into Wednesday with potential gusts reaching
40 to 50 mph. There are some model issues with respect to the
movement of the low pressure and associated wrap-around moisture
that would bring precipitation back to parts of northeast WI on
Wednesday. The ECMWF is faster with the surface low's exit, thus
more bullish on precipitation chances. Too much uncertainty at
this time, therefore will mention chance pops over the entire
forecast area on Wednesday with max temperatures in the lower to
middle 40s north, upper 40s to lower 50s south.

Wednesday night and Thursday...
Any wrap-around moisture will come to an end Wednesday night as
the system pulls farther north into Canada. High pressure to then
build into the Great Lakes region for Thursday bringing a return
of sunshine to northeast WI. Temperatures will be noticeably
cooler with readings to only be in the upper 30s north-central WI,
lower to middle 40s elsewhere.

storm system approaches from the Central Plains.

Freezing rain and snow is expected north of a RRL to IMT line
this morning. It will change to rain by afternoon. Periods of rain
and a chance of thunderstorms are likely to the south.

Rain will change to freezing rain and then snow from northwest to
southeast tonight, before diminishing Saturday morning. Significant
snow is likely north of a Wisconsin Rapids to Marinette line.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely across central and
east-central Wisconsin this afternoon into this evening. The
strongest storms could produce hail to around 1 inch in diameter.

Rain will change to snow from northwest to southeast tonight.
Snow accumulations of six to fourteen inches are possible across
northern Wisconsin, especially north of a Wausau to Marinette
line. Strong northerly winds may gust over 40 mph late tonight,
which could create blowing and drifting snow, and knock down some
trees branches and power lines. Very difficult travel conditions
are likely tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Light snow over eastern Wisconsin should end by midday Saturday.
Strong northerly winds are expected to continue to gust over 40
mph into Saturday afternoon, which could create blowing and
drifting snow. Very difficult travel conditions are possible.
