.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 239 PM CDT Wed Mar 29 2023

A stormy period with two significant cyclones bringing heavy
precipitation and potentially a wide array of weather types to the
area.

A very active weather pattern is in place across North America.
Ridging near Greenland/Baffin Bay will result in persistent
troughing over Hudson Bay/eastern Canada. Meanwhile strong Pacific
jet and shortwave energy heading toward the continent at a fairly
high latitude will be forced to turn southeast and divert around
the blocky pattern in the east. Major shortwaves digging through
the West and then ejecting across the Plains will bring a series
of intense cyclones through the Great Lakes region, resulting in
heavy and possibly excessive precipitation. Temperatures will
generally range from near normal on some days to considerably
below normal on others, with variations due to cloud
cover/precipitation and the change of air masses associated with
the passage of the cyclones.

The first cyclone will affect the area late this week, bringing
the potential for heavy rain, heavy snow, some freezing
precipitation (mainly north), thunderstorms, strong winds, and
possibly some flooding (areal and river) due to runoff from the
rainfall. Another cyclone (perhaps on a bit more westerly track)
appears on tap for the middle of next week.

.SHORT TERM...Tonight and Thursday

The quiet before the (first) storm. A cold anticyclone will shift
southeast across the area tonight, then off to the southeast on
Thursday as a warm front begins to approach from the southwest.
Tended toward the colder guidance products for tonight--especially
across the north where temps will fall quickly after sunset due
to clear skies and diminishing winds.

The arrival of the isentropic lift over the warm frontal surface
looks a bit slower than with the previous forecast package. So
slowed the arrival/increase of the PoPs. Although Thursday will
be off to a cold start, early day sunshine should allow temps to
warm quickly during the morning as the strong surface-based
inversion is eradicated. The slower arrival of the clouds and
precip should allow temps to continue to warm into the afternoon--
especially over the far N/NE. That will result in mixing out of
dew points in the northeast again. It will also mean a little more
liquid precip at the onset as temps will have farther to wet-bulb
before cooling enough for snow.

.LONG TERM...Thursday Night Through Wednesday

A still complicated forecast for Thursday night into Friday
morning as some of the models do not push the 0C 850mb isotherm
through our northern counties. This is problematic for the fact if
this does not occur, precipitation types could end up differently
than currently forecasted. This would impact snowfall and icing
amounts. Currently have 1 to 3 inches of snow and ice amounts
up to two tenths of an inch. Across central and east-central
Wisconsin, the precipitation will go over to snow for awhile due
to the intense lift from the low level jet, fairly potent f-gen
band and aided by steep mid level lapse rates before changing
over to all rain by mid to late evening.

On Friday, there will probably be a lull in the heavier precipitation
during the morning as the warm advection precipitation shifts to
the east while rain from the main system moves back into the area
during the afternoon. Precipitation type issues still a concern
over the far north Friday morning. The forecast has come into
better agreement that a band of heavy snow of 6 inches or more
will fall across northern Wisconsin, north of a Wausau to
Marinette line Friday night. The models yesterday were not in
agreement, but are now in agreement with this occurring. The are
some slight differences in where the axis of heavy snow will fall,
thus amounts may be adjusted slightly over the next day or two.

The models today are slower with the precipitation exiting
eastern Wisconsin Saturday morning. Per coordination with
surrounding offices, have increase the chances of precipitation
across the east. Wind gusts over 40 mph are possible late
Friday night into early Saturday afternoon. Winds will diminish
late Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening with dry conditions
expected Saturday night.

Weak disturbances moving through the mean flow will bring a
chance of light rain or snow Sunday and Monday. A stronger system
Monday night into Tuesday night will bring another round of rain
and snow. The best chance of snow will be across the north at this
time. Windy and colder conditions are expected on Wednesday.

.AVIATION...for 06Z TAF Issuance
Issued at 1048 PM CDT Wed Mar 29 2023

Good flying conditions are expected to prevail overnight as high
pressure slides over the Great Lakes. Only possible issue could be
some patchy ground fog, especially at RHI, due to clear skies,
light winds and very shallow low level moisture produced by the
recent snowmelt. Atmosphere will be very dry so the threat is very
low and will not include.

The high pressure will push into the Ohio Valley on Thursday, as
low pressure develops in the Plains and a warm front approaches
from the south. Flying conditions will deteriorate fairly quickly
Thursday afternoon/early evening (mainly in the IFR category with
some LIFR conditions possible) as clouds will lower and thicken
and precipitation blossoms over the area. Looking like a rain/snow
mix at GRB/ATW/MTW changing to rain Thursday evening, a rain/snow
mix at AUW/CWA with a little freezing possible changing to rain
by late Thursday evening, and snow changing to a wintry mix of
snow, freezing rain and possibly sleet at RHI. Isolated
thunderstorms will be possible Thursday evening.

Winds will remain light tonight, then turn to the south on
Thursday then southeast Thursday evening with gusts to 20-25 kts
by late afternoon or evening. LLWS is possible Thursday evening
as southeast winds increase aloft, especially at GRB/ATW/MTW.

Hazardous travel can be expected across northern Wisconsin
Thursday night into Friday morning. Snowfall totals of 1 to 3

with the highest totals north of Highway 64.

A strong low pressure system is expected to bring heavy rain,
snow, and thunderstorms from Friday into Saturday morning. It now
appears that a heavy band of snow of 6 inches or more is possible
across northern Wisconsin, especially north of a Wausau to
Marinette line, resulting in poor visibilities and snow covered
roads for motorists. Strong northerly winds may gust over 40 mph
late Friday night into early Saturday afternoon.

A total of 1 to 3 inches of precipitation is expected across the
area from Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning. The
precipitation that falls as rain combined with runoff from
melting snow will result in rising levels and increasing flows on
area streams and rivers through early next week. Anyone living
near a river or stream should be alert for the possibility of
flooding. More widespread minor low-land flooding is possible
across central and east-central Wisconsin. Urban flooding is also
possible where lingering snow and ice blocking storm sewer
grates restrict the flow of runoff into the drainage system.
