Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Green Bay WI 1022 PM CST Wed Mar 8 2023 Updated aviation portion for 06Z TAF issuance .SHORT TERM...Tonight and Thursday Issued at 258 PM CST Wed Mar 8 2023 Skies were mostly sunny across northeast Wisconsin with mostly cloudy skies across portions of central and north-central Wisconsin. Temperatures were in the middle 30s to lower 40s. For tonight, skies should turn mostly cloudy across the entire area. The snow across Minnesota will move east into Wisconsin but much of that should dissipate as it reaches our area. Did contemplate adding some flurries later this evening, but decided to hold off based on the bufkit soundings suggesting a lot of dry air near the surface. There appears there will be enough breaks in the clouds for temperatures to drop across far northeast Wisconsin. Did lower temperatures the greatest in this area. Lows should range in the teens north to the lower to middle 20s south and upper 20s at Manitowoc. On Thursday, skies will be mostly cloudy. Snow, maybe mixed with rain will move towards central Wisconsin late in the day. There are some timing differences between the quicker NAM/ECMWF and the slower Canadian/GFS. Took a blend of the model solutions for precipitation timing which matched up well with surrounding offices. Highs will be in the 30s. .LONG TERM...Thursday Night Through Wednesday Issued at 258 PM CST Wed Mar 8 2023 The main focus of the extended forecast will be the winter system at the beginning of the forecast period, Thursday night through Friday. Thursday night through Friday...Snow will be moving into the region at the beginning of the extended period, as a surface low crosses central Illinois. Moisture and warmer air wrapping around the northern end of the surface low will provide the primary ingredients for snow production on the northern end, aided by the LFQ and a mid-level shortwave aloft. Overall qpf has increased slightly over the area with the latest model runs, bringing some higher snow totals a little further north. However, snow-liquid ratios provide a challenge as this snow does have the potential to be on the heavier side, keeping accumulation at the surface slightly lower than would be initially suggested. Thus, lowered some of the snow ratios for the overnight period. Finally, short term meso models have finally begun to pickup on the lake enhancement potential for this system as winds turn to the northeast. Delta-T values will be around 10 to 15 degrees, which isn't the most impressive, but with the other dynamics at play will certainly prove enough to bring some additional snow to the lakeshore. All that said, uncertainty remains on exactly how much lake enhancement will occur and whether the track will hold steady over the next day and a half. Additionally, the 18 to 21 hour duration of the snowfall, even if most of it will fall within 12 hours, makes the headlines a bit tricky. Forecast snowfall amounts do have areas approaching 6 to 7 inches and some higher amounts along the lakeshore are possible, but given the uncertainty, decided to go with a high end winter weather advisory at this time. There will be the possibility of a future upgrade to a winter storm warning if future forecasts keep the current storm track and the lake enhancement signal persists. The snow will exit fairly quickly over the later portion of the day Friday, bringing back quieter conditions for the early weekend. Rest of the forecast... The next chance for light snow will arrive on Sunday as a fast moving shortwave crosses the area. A quick couple of inches are possible before this shortwave exits the region. Models have hinted at another quick round of snow for Monday, so retained the pops from initial guidance for this snow as well. High pressure then builds in for early next week, bringing back dry and sunny conditions along with near normal temperatures. && .AVIATION...for 06Z TAF Issuance Issued at 1022 PM CST Wed Mar 8 2023 Good flying weather should continue through at least mid afternoon Thursday. Middle clouds may produce light snow but dry air below 8000 feet should keep precipitation from reaching the surface. Light snow and MVFR conditions could arrive west of a Rhinelander to Oshkosh line by late afternoon Thursday as a winter storm approaches from the southwest. Light to moderate snow and IFR conditions are likely Thursday night through around noon Friday.
