Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Green Bay WI 517 AM CST Sun Feb 26 2023 Updated aviation portion for 12Z TAF issuance .SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Monday Issued at 321 AM CST Sun Feb 26 2023 Satellite imagery showed mostly clear skies across the region early this morning with a ridge of high pressure over the western Great Lakes region. Mostly sunny skies are expected today as the high pressure slides off to the east. Highs today are expected to mainly be in the upper 20s to lower 30s. A low pressure system developing over the central Plains will lift northeast towards south Iowa late tonight, then continue tracking east near the Wisconsin and Illinois border on Monday. This system will bring a wintry mix of weather to the region, with a warm layer aloft starting the precipitation off as freezing rain late tonight. Precipitation will then become a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow Monday morning as colder air gets pulled in from the north, with an eventual changeover to mainly snow Monday afternoon with some rain possible across central and east-central Wisconsin. The timing of the system has come in later this run, with precipitation not starting until late tonight versus just after midnight per previous runs. In addition, snowfall amounts across north-central Wisconsin have come in a bit higher this run, with the possibility of reaching 6 inches in 12 hours a tier north of the current watch. Freezing rain amounts are still around one quarter of an inch across much of central Wisconsin. Across the rest of the area icing amounts are generally 0.1 to 0.2 inches with snowfall amounts of2 to 4 inches. Given all these factors will push back the start of the watch across central Wisconsin 3 hours and include another tier of counties north to the UP border across north-central Wisconsin with the current Winter Storm Watch. Areas not in the current Watch would likely see a Winter Weather Advisory if the current trends hold from the 00z models. Lows tonight are expected are expected to range from the middle teens across the north, to around 20 across central and east- central Wisconsin. Highs Monday are expected to range from around 30 across north-central Wisconsin to the middle 30s across east- central Wisconsin and portions of central Wisconsin. .LONG TERM...Monday Night Through Saturday Issued at 321 AM CST Sun Feb 26 2023 Fairly progressive fast moving flow Monday night into Tuesday... The last of the wintry system from the short term will work its way out of the region Monday evening, with quieter conditions expected to return overnight. Weak surface high pressure will then establish itself over the region due to the arriving colder air from the west. Expect a quieter and sunny day for most of Tuesday, with high temperatures in the middle 30s to lower 40s. Tuesday night through Wednesday... The next chance for precipitation will be a fast moving shortwave that will arrive in the middle of the week. Models still diverge on the exact timing, from a more aggressive late Tuesday night to a slower Wednesday morning timing. Currently this system is forecast to predominantly snow, but a lack of ice aloft could see brief drizzle or freezing drizzle mix in at times. Most of the area will likely see at least a dusting of snow, with higher snow totals possible in northern Wisconsin. Amounts up to 2 to 4 inches will be possible near the Upper Peninsula border with the current forecast, but this may change if the timing becomes more defined as this will likely be a relatively fast event. Rest of the forecast... Another strong upper trough will dig into the southwestern US during the late week, developing a strong low pressure system that will cross CONUS into the Ohio River Valley.
