.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday night)

Upper ridge will persists over the central plains today before
moving east tomorrow ahead of the next trough which arrives on
Thursday. Until then, warm, dry and windy conditions will prevail.
Critical fire weather conditions are likely today and again on
Wednesday due to the combination of low humidity, breezy to windy
south winds and dry fuels. High temperatures will be in the 80s
and lows in the 40s and 50s. As mentioned, an upper trough will
be approaching the central Rockies on Thursday. The surface trough
which has been parked over eastern Colorado will move into
northwest Kansas/southwest Nebraska Thursday afternoon. Critical
fire weather conditions will be possible once again with low
humidity and gusty winds continuing. Might see an isolated high
based thunderstorm develop near the surface trough, but with dew
points in the 30s instability will be rather weak at less than 500
j/kg along with weak shear, so no severe storms anticipated.
Scattered showers/isolated storms linger into Thursday evening as
they move northeast into Nebraska. Highs will be in the 80s and
lows Thursday night in the 40s and 50s.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Tuesday)

A few showers accompanying a cold front, freezing temperatures, and
dry conditions are expected in the long term.

Friday, an upper-level trough will push through the region. This
will cause a corresponding surface cold front to move through the Tri-
State area during the day from the northwest. Timing is the biggest
question with this front. The ECMWF shows the front being through
the CWA by 12Z Friday while the GFS only has the front about half
way through the CWA at that time. The CMC-NH shows the front
entering northwest Kansas around 18Z. The later that this cold front
moves through the region, the more likely we will have precipitation
as more moisture will have moved back into the area and more CAPE
will be available. Currently, some isolated showers look to be the
most likely, but the possibility of a few thunderstorm cannot be
ruled out. Depending on the timing and speed of the cold front,
precipitation could linger into the middle of Saturday.

Behind the cold front, stout north-northwesterly winds are expected
with sustained speeds of over 20 kts and gusts around 30 kts looking
possible. This will help usher in cooler temperatures Friday night,
possibly below freezing.

Behind the trough, a ridge will begin building in on Saturday,
likely in the evening or overnight hours. This will start slowing
the winds and clear out the sky. With light winds and clear skies
Saturday night, temperatures will drop below freezing for most of
the Tri-State area. Prepare vegetation for frost over the weekend.

Warmer temperatures will return Sunday and a warming trend will
continue into at least the first part of the workweek. Dry
conditions are expected to continue from Sunday and into the first
half of the workweek. This will create increased fire weather
concerns Sunday through Tuesday.

Gusty southerly winds will decrease around 02z but sustained

the Kansas counties bordering Colorado.
