KEY MESSAGES:
1. Light snow for tonight, with any accumulation expected to be an
inch or less.
2. A more impactful system still on track for Friday night into
Saturday, with the biggest impacts still looking to be south of
Interstate 90.
2. Much below normal temperatures will follow that system, impacting
the region for the upcoming weekend into the middle of next week.
TONIGHT: An upper level and surface low presently situated over
northern ND will shift to the southeast tonight, pulling a frontal
boundary across our area overnight. Out ahead of the system, strong
midlevel warm air advection will overspread the region, with light
snow/mixed precipitation collocated with the boundary sliding
eastward across the area during the night time hours. Southwesterly
winds will begin to increase this evening as the surface pressure
gradient intensifies, and this in addition to warming thermal
profiles will result in temperatures steadying out or rising
overnight. Because of this, snow may actually mix with rain at times
as it moves to the east. Any one location will only have
precipitation for 2 to 3 hours, so any snowfall accumulations will
be light - ranging from a few tenths, upwards to a localized inch or
so north of Interstate 90. Cold air advection behind the boundary
will result in increasing northwesterly winds after 06Z, and areas
to the west of Interstate 29 could have wind gusts around 45 mph for
a few hours. Because of this, expanded the previous Wind Advisory -
although started it a little later than the previous one. With the
increasing winds, any snow that falls may blow around, though the
warming temperatures may work against this.
Friday: The aforementioned surface low moves into the Great Lakes
region during the day, finally pulling a cold front through our area
by late morning or early afternoon. With increasing cold air
advection behind the front, morning temperatures in the upper 20s to
lower 30s will fall into the teens and 20s by later in the
afternoon. Breezy northwest winds will make it feel even cooler.
.LONG TERM...(Friday Night through Thursday)

FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY: An upper level low over CO shifts
eastward through NE Friday night. With that, snow is expected to
develop across much of the area as midlevel frontogenesis increases -
especially south of Interstate 90 - collocated with the strongest
lift in the dendritic zone. In addition, there looks to be a bit of
instability above the frontal circulation through the lower MO River
corridor into northwestern IA later in the night. This may result in
increasing snowfall rates - with HREF ensembles indicating rates
nearing 1 inch an hour over that area. That being said, differences
remain among the various deterministic models and ensembles. The
deterministic GFS and GEFS ensembles still portray the most
southerly solution, with the heavier snow band just to the south of
the SD/NE line. Both the ECMWF and Canadian models/ensembles have a
farther north solution, with the heavier snow axis along and south
of the MO River corridor. Hi-res models are kind of split at this
point, with the HRRR/RAP similar to the ECMWF/Canadian, and the NAM
Nest/FV3/ARW closer to the GFS. Bottom line is that guidance has not
completely come together on a solution. However, the overall theme
has not changed - with the heaviest snow most likely through the MO
River corridor into our lower northwestern IA zones - where snowfall
amounts just either side of 6 inches will be possible. Back to the
north, amounts quickly drop off with 2 to 3 inches possible through
the Interstate 90 corridor, with less than an inch along the Highway
14 corridor. Obviously these values could change if the track of the
system shifts. Snow looks to continue through Saturday morning
before ending in the afternoon. Northerly winds will gust at 20 to
30 mph on Saturday, so there could be areas with blowing snow. Based
on the current snow totals for the period, kept the Winter Storm
watch going for the same area - though expanded it into a couple
more IA counties. Cold air begins to feed into the area through the
period, with lows on Friday night mainly in the single digits, with
highs on Saturday in the single digits and teens.
SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY: The main theme in the extended period of
the forecast remains to be the very cold temperatures. NAEFS/ECMWF
ensembles continue to indicate temperatures in the bottom 10th
percentile (or lower) relative to climatology - especially through
the beginning of the week. Highs look to be in the single digits to
mid teens, with lows in the single digits below to teens below zero.
Unfortunately, that being said, as stated in the previous discussion,
the currently forecasted NBM temperatures may be on the warmer side -
with forecasted highs on most days being closer to the NBM 75th
percentile. With ensembles indicating temperatures in the 10th or
lower percentile, that seems unlikely. So in effect, temperatures may
be a couple degrees cooler than presently forecasted. As has been
pointed out in previous discussions, it will not be especially windy
during the week, though with the currently forecasted temperatures
wind chills will be 20 below to 30 below at times. Although models
are not indicating any major systems through the extended period, we
cannot rule out periods of light snow sometime for next week.

As of 05z, a round of brief light rain or wintry mix continues
east through the region. Winds will shift from west/southwest to
northwest overnight, increasing slightly with gusts of 25 to 40
kts. Thus far winds have not been strong enough to loft blowing
snow for visibility restrictions upstream so removed this from the
TAF for now and will continue to monitor.
Ceilings should improve to above 2kft by daybreak for west of the
I-29 corridor. Further east, MVFR stratus may linger through mid
day, especially in southwest MN. Northwest winds will weaken in
the afternoon hours.
