A quiet and dreary day will likely be on tap today as mid-level
ridging moves into the region. Looking at the latest satellite
imagery, the lingering stratus left behind by yesterday's system
shows no signs of letting up any time soon. As a result,
temperatures will likely only slightly warm into the mid 20s to low
30s across the area today as northwesterly flow continues. By
tonight, cool and mostly cloudy conditions will set in as overnight
lows dip to the teens and low 20s. Our attention will then shift to
Rockies as the upper level trough that will likely bring our next
precipitation chances gets ejected in the central and northern
plains.
Confidence continues to increase in a very impactful winter storm
affecting the region Wednesday and Wednesday night. Unlike the
previous winter systems though, the thermal profiles for the system
are cold enough to have predominantly snow when the precipitation
starts. As mentioned in the previous discussion, deterministic
guidance continue to show that the heaviest snowfall will be south
of I-90 along a gradient extending from Gregory SD to Canton, SD
to Windom MN. At the same time though, the location of this
gradient could shift northward or southward depending on the track
of this system. Two distinct scenario are possible at that point.
If the system continues to shift its track to the north, snowfall
amounts will likely increase area wide with the axis of heavier
snowfall likely shifting further into parts of southeastern SD and
southwestern MN. If the system shifts its track further south,
snowfall amounts likely decrease with the axis of heavier snowfall
likely setting up in extreme northeast NE and along/south of the
highway-20 corridor in northwestern IA. Either way, both the GFS and
Euro ensembles continue to have high confidence (90%-100%) in the
probabilities of exceeding 3 inches of snowfall and medium to high
confidence (50-60%) in exceeding 6 inches. In light of the new
information and collaboration with neighboring offices/WPC, the
previously mentioned Winter Weather Watch has been extended to
include the rest of our northwestern IA counties, a pair of counties
in southwestern MN, and a few more counties in southeastern SD.

Snow looks to linger into Thursday morning east of I-29 as the upper
wave moves to the east. With upper forcing for ascent and isentropic
lift decreasing rapidly through the morning any additional
accumulations will be less than an inch. Otherwise, northwest winds
will continue through much of the day with the strongest winds east
of I-29. Wind could gust up to 30 mph - especially in the morning
and that may produce some blowing and drifting snow through Thursday
afternoon which may impact travel - especially on east-west roads
with higher snowbanks. Cooler temperatures are expected Thursday and
Friday with highs generally in the low to mid 20s.
Looking ahead to the weekend, another short wave will move through
the area on Saturday. None of the deterministic models produce
precipitation - primarily due to dry air below 850 mb. However,
30-50% of ensemble members from the GEFS and CMC do produce light
snow during the day on Saturday. Given that the probability of 0.1"
of precipitation is less than 20%, any snow would be light and would
only last a few hours. At this point, did not add snow into the
forecast but it will be something to be aware of. Regardless of
whether snow falls or not, westerly flow will bring in a little
warmer air for the weekend. Highs will generally be near normal
to a little above normal. There is the potential that west of the
James River, highs could rise above freezing if warm air at 925 mb
can mix to the surface. Confidence decreases on Sunday and Monday as
ensemble show a wide variance in solutions and timing of waves in
northwest flow. 00Z ensembles do show a low probability of light
snow on Monday but, similar to Saturday, the probability of more
than a tenth of an inch is less than 20% so any snow would be
brief and light.
