3. Cold front brings rain chances Friday and cooler temperatures
into the weekend.

Today: A taste of summer today with favorable southwesterly low
level flow providing ample mixing into the 850 mb temperatures AOA
the 90th percentile of climatology. In areas that are free of snow
cover, should see highs push into the 80s to nearing 90 with even
70s over areas with residual snowcover. At the same time, these
southwesterly winds will gust toward the 30 to 35 mph range
resulting in critical fire danger further discussed in the Fire
Weather Section.

Tonight: Winds may remain elevated enough with broad WAA through the
925:850 mb layer to keep temperatures quite mild overnight,
generally 50s for low, perhaps not dropping much lower than 60 in
some locations.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

Wednesday and Thursday: Main forecast challenge through midweek will
be the placement of meandering thermal boundary and preceding
inverted trough axis. Within this trough axis, likely to see some
enhanced heating and behind the boundary cooler values as winds take
on a more northeasterly component. Current indications this boundary
may sink toward a Chamberlain to Huron line both days but still
plenty of time for adjustment to this. Atop this boundary, not
impossible that some higher based precip develops but forecast
soundings leave quite a bit of doubt that anything would reach the
surface.

Similar conditions as today ahead of the boundary however with
very warm temperatures in the 80s with the potential to push 90s
within the heart of the trough axis. Gusty winds will persist as
well, focusing more into northwest Iowa with time.

Friday: Trough finally cuts into the robust ridging by Friday
driving a stronger cold front through the region. This will set
temperatures into a non-diurnal trend behind it where passage
occurs during the daytime hours. It's passage will also result in
the return of rain and convection chances later Friday into Friday
night.

Saturday through Monday: A return to near to below normal
temperatures for Saturday and Sunday, moderating slightly by Monday.
Any precipitation chances should be fading quickly by Saturday
morning but should any lingering activity remain, thermal profiles
would leave the door open for a few wet snowflakes.

VFR conditions are expected to continue across the area for the
duration of this TAF period. Looking at satellite, mostly clear
conditions area expected to continue into the afternoon and evening.
Otherwise, periods of breezy to strong southerly to southwesterly
winds will continue into the overnight hours. Wind gusts between 30
to 35 kts are expected. The only other aviation concern will be
possibility of low level wind shear that is expected to develop from
02z to 12z across the area to end the TAF period.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 238 AM CDT Tue Apr 11 2023

Ample mixing within a favorable southwest flow today will allow
anomalously warm mid level temperatures to the surface and result
in widespread 80s to perhaps near 90 this afternoon, a bit cooler
over areas with remaining snowcover. This mixing will also help
pull down higher momentum air in the form of southwesterly winds
gusting 30-35 mph, with isolated gusts closer to 40 mph not out of
the question. Afternoon relative humidity values will fall
quickly by late morning into critical threshold of 10-25%. Going
Red Flag Warning still looks valid although did expand into Beadle
County where it appears enough of the area has been snow free for
long enough to allow for suitable fuel conditions. Counties
bordering the Red Flag Warning may also see meteorological
conditions approach critical thresholds, there is just higher
uncertainty with fuel status given more recent snow melt or even
remaining snowcover.

Similar conditions are expected for Wednesday and Thursday, with
perhaps a slight southeast shift where the main focus is as a
boundary works into central and northeastern South Dakota. Will very
likely need additional headlines for mid week but will handle one
day at a time.
