.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Tonight)

Key Messages:

1. Another mild and mostly quiet day will be on tap Today

2. A significantly impactful winter storm is still on track to bring
heavy snow, strong winds, and potential blizzard conditions to the
region Tuesday through Thursday.

3. Colder air behind this week's system along with fresh snowpack
will likely bring chilly overnight temperatures and wind chills back
to the region Thursday night into Friday morning.

This Evening/Tonight: Looks like a another mild and mostly quiet day
will likely be on tap for the rest of the day today. Looking at
satellite imagery, mostly clear skies this morning will likely give
way to intermittent cloud cover this afternoon. Looking aloft, the
previously mentioned upper level trough is on track to move through
areas along the ND/SD boarder and portions of northern MN. What this
means for our area is as slightly more mild temperatures thanks to
the warm air advection out ahead of the trough. As of 18z,
temperatures are already starting to trend towards the 75th
percentile of NBM guidance this afternoon. Have adjusted our highs
accordingly, but most areas should at least top out in 40s with
areas along the Mo River reaching the upper 40s to lower 50s.

By tonight, the previously mentioned trough will swing into the
northern portions of MN tightening the surface pressure gradient
(SPG) across the area. The result will be strong northerly to
northwesterly winds with gust between 25-30kts possible. Looking at
the latest CAMs and high resolution guidance, most models have
started shifting tonight's precipitation chances further southwards.
As a result, have lowered POPs along the Mo River Valley to reflect
this. Looking at temperatures tonight, cold air advection on the
back side of the trough will drop temperatures across the area
especially in areas north of I-90. The resulting overnight lows will
be range between the negative singling digits to the teens with the
coldest conditions along the Hwy-14 corridor. Winds will drop off
overnight and shift to southeast by Tuesday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Monday)

Looking into the extended period, the main story continues to be the
upcoming multi-day system that is expected to bring significant
winter impacts to the Northern Plains Tuesday through Thursday.
After collaboration with our neighboring offices this afternoon, we
have decided to upgrade portions of southwestern MN and the Hwy-14
corridor into a Winter Weather Advisory starting 18z Tuesday through
12z Wednesday due to the potential for accumulating snow. The Winter
Storm Watch for all other areas will continue until further warning
decisions can be made tonight into tomorrow morning. Until then,
back to the storm.

Looking aloft, 06z deterministic guidance continues to show a
northern stream jet moving overhead from the northwest to southeast
Tuesday morning as developing warm air advection (WAA) spreads over
the area in the mid levels. As strong mid-level frontogenesis
develops with the previously mentioned setup, deterministic guidance
continues to show a band of snow likely developing in portions of
northcentral SD and spreading into areas north of I-90. Forecast
soundings continue to show instability above the frontal band, so
snowfall amounts may intensify as the band tighten initially
Tuesday afternoon.

The area that will likely be affected by this band will likely be
portions of the Hwy-14 corridor and southwestern MN hints the
upgrade to a Winter Storm Advisory. As far as amounts during this
time, areas in the advisory could receive snow amounts between
3-5 inches. Other surrounding areas could see between half an inch
to an inch of snowfall. Shifting our focus to the winds, strong
southeasterly winds are expected Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday
night with wind gusts between 20-30kts possible. Snow intensity
should begin to slow Tuesday night as frontogenesis likely
decreases aloft. Broad synoptic support via the right entrance
region of the another upper level jet should continue snowfall
development across the area, but this should be lighter fluffier
snow.

Heading into Wednesday and Thursday, our main longwave trough
finally gets ejected into the central/northern plains. This will
place our forecast area in broadly diffluent pattern related to the
strong jet streak aloft. As alluded to in the previous discussion,
lee cyclogenesis will likely occur at the surface due to strong
potential vorticity anomoly passing nearby. This will likely lead to
the return of strong winds with gusts between 35-45 kts at times.
Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected to start Wednesday afternoon
through Thursday morning with the potential for rapid accumulation
in most areas. This in combination with the strong winds will likely
result in near white conditions across parts of the area as well as
nearly impossible travel. In terms of overall amounts, areas along a
line stretching from Yankton, SD to Spirit Lake, IA and
southwards could expect between 6 to 10 inches of snow. Areas in
southcentral, northcentral, and eastern SD could anywhere between
11 to 16 inches of fresh snow. Areas in southwestern MN could see
anywhere between 14 to 22 inches of fresh snow. Until this system
fully ejects from the Rockies, these area are still subject to
change. Since significant travel impacts are expected, please try
to reschedule plans and stay indoors if possible.

After this system pulls through the northern plains by the end of
next week, much colder temperatures are expected to return to the
region Thursday night into Friday with lows in the negative teens
to negative double digits expected. Looking at ensemble guidance,
most areas will fall within the lowest 1 percent of climatology
Friday morning. This will be short lived though as a push of warm
air advection with a surface ridge should bring temperatures back
up above freezing to start the weekend. Deterministic guidance
continues show some precipitation chances later Monday, but timing
and progression differences continue to make confidence in this
occurring low.

Skies are clearing after the passage of a cold front this evening.
High pressure will settle into the area by daybreak, leading to a
variable wind direction for a period of time into mid-morning.

Meanwhile, mid-clouds will thicken by daybreak as a wing of warm
advection precipitation begins to develop over central and north
central South Dakota. This cloud cover will continue to lower,
developing into a narrow band of snow as it moves northeast. The
greatest area for initial snowflakes is likely from Huron to Sioux
Falls, with the band lifting east and northeast into the
afternoon. Brief period of MVFR visibility will be possible, but
once the snow moves away, ceilings may rise.

Stratus will begin to develop later in the day and towards the
evening and low-lvl moisture increases. Some snow may redevelop by
evening spreading along a corridor from Lake Andes through Sioux
Falls and into Southwest Minnesota. MVFR to IFR ceilings will be
possible.
