and a gradual warming and drying trend are anticipated next week as
this system exits.

.DISCUSSION...Latest satellite imagery shows a rather stout,
early-season trough digging into the western US. Derived motion
winds indicate the base of the trough has almost formed a closed
circulation at 500mb, with a center near the Reno area. Model
guidance suggest that a closed low will develop and slowly
translate east across the Great Basin this weekend, keeping our
weather unsettled. The most widespread impact will be strong
winds, with 700mb flow around 35-45 knots. Sufficient diurnal
heating this afternoon has allowed these winds to mix down to the
surface, with widespread 40-50 mph gusts already being reported.
Wind Advisories remain in effect across the area through this
evening. Winds will wane tonight in many locations, but areas
along and northeast of higher terrain are expected to remain windy
overnight. Wind Advisories remain in effect for these locations
through the night to account for this. Tomorrow, gusty winds
resume, primarily for areas along and each of the I-17/Highway- 89
corridor where a Wind Advisory will be in effect. Hi-res guidance
is picking up on an area of enhanced wind potential in the White
Mountains Sunday morning and afternoon. This morning's HREF gives
a solid 50-90% chance of wind gusts of 58+ mph between Highway 60
and the mountain peaks. As such, the High Wind Watch has been
upgraded to a warning from 10am to 8pm on Sunday. On the fire
weather side, moisture values will remain low enough for near-
critical fire weather conditions, especially across northeast
Arizona where relative humidity values could drop below 15% for a
brief period in the afternoon.

The other notable aspect of this system will be precipitation
potential, mainly this evening through Sunday night. Latest CAMs
depict a line of showers/storms developing in our far western area
in the late afternoon and early evening. Some of these storms could
be strong to severe, with wind being the main concern. The SPC has
contoured our northwestern areas a Marginal Risk of severe winds. As
the sun sets and the line progresses east, intensity will wane and
precipitation should be predominantly in the form of showers. Best
chances of rain are expected along and west of the I-17/Highway-89
corridor. Limited moisture and fast storm motion should greatly
limit any flash flood potential. Light, scattered showers are
forecast to linger tonight and through the day tomorrow in these
same locations.

On Monday, the base of the trough will still be over northern
Arizona, but the primary vort max is forecast to be on its way out
of the area. As a result, gusty conditions and rain chances should
largely be confined to eastern sections of the CWA. A secondary vort
max dives into the trough and reinforces it on Tuesday, but doesn't
really do much in terms of sensible weather. By Wednesday, models
take the trough axis out of our CWA, allowing 500mb heights to rise
and a gradual warming trend ensues. From Monday to Friday,
temperatures warm 6-10 degrees across the region while winds remain
light and dry conditions prevail.

.AVIATION...For the 18z TAF Package...Gusty south-southwest winds and VFR
conditions anticipated across the area this afternoon, though
occasional MVFR visibility will be possible near KFLG, KSEZ, and
KPAN (due to smoke), as well as KINW (due to blowing dust). This
evening and tonight, showers and storms moving in from the west may
bring impacts to areas along and west of a KPRC-KFLG-KPGA line. With
gusty winds already in place, main concerns will be reduced
visibility and low CIGs. Light showers may linger through the night
and into tomorrow morning near KFLG, KPGA, and KSEZ. Aviation
discussion not updated for TAF amendments.

.FIRE WEATHER...Today through Sunday...South-southwest wind gusts
increasing to 40-50 MPH area wide today, then mainly east of
Flagstaff on Sunday. Minimum humidity values ranging from 12-20%
today, with scattered near-critical fire weather. A 20-40% chance of
showers and thunderstorms tonight across northwest Arizona.
Thunderstorms may become severe. Much cooler on Sunday with
increasing humidity.

Monday through Wednesday...The cool temperatures persist. Slight
chance of showers from Flagstaff northward on Monday. Breezy west to
southwest winds on Monday, decreasing and becoming northwesterly on
Tuesday, followed by northeasterly winds on Wednesday.
