Guidance is no longer showing any signal for fog on the edges of
our CWA tonight, and trends are matching well with current
forecast through Tuesday morning. Will continue to monitor trends
for the Tue-Wed AM system as new data comes in tonight. So far
there hasn't been a shift in probs/timing/expected impacts from
previous discussion, and the watch remains in effect.

UPDATE Issued at 645 PM CDT Mon Mar 20 2023

The forecast is on track for tonight, and only minor adjustments
were made to wind/sky cover to reflect current trends a little
better. Overall, should be quite with lighter winds and high
clouds increasing. There is some signal for fog develop in short
range guidance near our far south and west, but this would likely
be ground fog and very localized/patchy if anything (very weak
signal).

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

Snow totals and what to do with headlines are the main forecast
problems for the period.

Surface ridging will continue to keep conditions fairly quiet and
cold overnight. Winds will shift from the north to the east, and
there will be a bit more high clouds, but no impacts are expected.
Temperatures will remain well below normal and bottom out mostly
in the single digits.

A strong shortwave trough moving into the Dakotas tomorrow will
bring another chance for accumulating snow late Tuesday into
Tuesday night. There is good synoptic lift and some mid-level
frontogenesis evident, although the system will be very quick
moving and residence times of heavier snow will be short. There is
some 40 to 70 percent chances for 1 inch per hour snow rates as
the snow moves through. Probabilities for over 2 inches are high
across most of the area, so at least advisory level snow will be
possible in most areas. There is still the potential for a narrow
band of warning level snow, and models have been shifting that
band a little further northwest. However, given recent model
biases am not sure about this solution, and probabilities of 6
inches or more are 20 percent or less. Given the uncertainty, will
keep the watch going, expanding it a bit further northwest to
account for the shift in solutions and to match neighboring
offices.

Winds will be relatively tame as low pressure only starts to close
off once it moves off to the northeast. There could be some
drifting snow in some spots, but bigger impacts will be with the
falling snow. The snow should taper off fairly quickly Wednesday
morning as weak surface high pressure builds back into the Plains.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday)

A quiet long term period is expected late this week into the
beginning of next week.

There's a slight chance for snow showers along the south dakota
border (south of I-94) Wednesday night into Thursday morning as a
system slides south of us, but it will be pretty isolated if it
occurs. Accumulation will be a dusting at most.

There's some indications in guidance that we could see more
precipitation over the weekend, but confidence is fairly low right
now as there is a fair amount of variance in timing, amounts, and
track of the system. POPs are fairly low, and weak flow aloft is
present in the UL, so not really any indications at this time that
there will be a significant event.

Temperatures will be in the 20s and low 30s
through the weekend, so a bit below normal for this time of year.
Winds could become a bit breezy over the weekend, but nothing too
impactful.

VFR conditions and light winds less than 10kt should prevail
across eastern ND and northwest MN through Tuesday morning. By
Tuesday afternoon MVFR stratus is shown to overspread the region
as low level moisture increases in easterly flow ahead of an
approaching system. This system is on track to bring widespread
snow to the region by late afternoon, with better chances for
moderate to heavy snowfall from southeast ND into west central MN
Tuesday evening into the early morning period Wednesday period
before quickly moving east.
