Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Grand Forks ND 1155 PM CST Mon Feb 27 2023 .UPDATE... Issued at 1015 PM CST Mon Feb 27 2023 Skies remain clear and surface ridging remains west, so winds have been slower to decrease (still ranging from 10-15 mph at some locations in ND). Guidance is starting to resolve a signal for ground fog to the west, but shows a much more disorganized signal in our area. Impacts are uncertain as we first need the surface ridge to move over our CWA (winds to drop off and stabilize the lower levels) and this may not be until closer to sunrise. Ultimately this will be a localized/patchy ground fog situation (limits impacts), so we will continue to monitor tonight. UPDATE Issued at 721 PM CST Mon Feb 27 2023 Clear skies are prevailing, while winds are still remaining breezy (mainly in ND) due to lingering surface gradient ahead of an approaching cold front and surface ridge. This is keeping temperatures relatively mild despite the good clearing. As surface the front slides east and surface ridging moves our CWA CWA winds should decrease and it is possible we see some ground fog. Hi res guidance at most shows very localized/patchy fog. I made some near term adjustment to reflect current trends this evening, and left fog mention out for now. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday night) Issued at 237 PM CST Mon Feb 27 2023 Key Message - Another winter system will spread impacts (snow & blowing snow) mainly along and south of the Interstate 94 corridor Tuesday night into Wednesday Starting off with current conditions, there are still various amounts of cloud cover and fog to the east of the Red River Valley. Other than being impactful for the aviation community, the bigger impact to the general public is the fog. For the most part, visibilities have improved, however there are still some lower visibilities (brief 1/4-1/2 mile) on the back edge of the cloud deck from Roseau to Fosston to Elbow Lake. Surface winds increase in this area too, so the lower visibilities will not last all that long. There is still some cloud cover within the Red River Valley, but it is clearing to the west of the Valley. So expect the evening to see decreasing clouds and steady west winds. These west winds may die down late tonight, and with the somewhat clear skies, could result in some patchy fog again toward Tuesday sunrise. Overall confidence in where or when is pretty low right now, so will leave out. Tuesday itself should be a decent day, with lower winds, some sun, and temperatures in the 20s to low 30s. Increasing clouds can be expected by afternoon. So for the main impact period, starting Tuesday night, there are still questions. There has been good consistency in the forcing mechanisms, ie, some warm advection, 700/500mb wave, and frontogenetical forcing. It does appear there could even be a little CAPE, with a decent residence time of forcing for banded snow. The best area appears to be along and south of Interstate 94 in North Dakota, but it could creep into adjacent areas of west central Minnesota as well. QPF amounts down in this smaller area could be around 0.50 inches. So the ingredients are there for 4 to 6 inches of snow over southeast ND, with the potential for even higher amounts (6+) in some smaller areas within this region. Timing is significant, because it will fall over the Wednesday morning rush period. The wind potential should also be considered. Like yesterday, there is not a good unidirectional profile in the model soundings. Yesterday there was a good profile from the surface to 925mb, with the 850mb flow more from the E-NE to W-SW (a cross valley flow). Today even the 925mb flow seems to have shifted more from the E-NE to W-SW, and the surface winds showing more of a NE to SW component (whereas yesterday they were straighter N to S). There still appears to be possibly 20-22 knots of surface wind, but that would not be a really strong wind. However, with falling snow, it would still result in impacts though. All said, there are still several potential solutions to watch out for: - Most of the area along/south of I-94 seeing advisory type snow amounts (2-6 inches) with some wind (blowing and drifting) - A small area within this could see amounts greater than 6 inches (warning impacts). Where this area may be may not be certain until the band forms. There would also be wind with blowing and drifting - There is always the potential the expected snow area could shift north or south. If it shifts south, the falling snow and increasing winds may not overlap, resulting in lower impacts So there are still uncertainties. After coordinating with adjacent and our national Winter Weather desk, have decided to re-issue the Special Weather Statement that was issued on the previous shift. This message still highlights the uncertainties and potentials for this event. Other offices are planning advisories, but with the potential for some small areas receiving warning type snowfall, did not want to go that route in our area today. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 237 PM CST Mon Feb 27 2023 An active weather pattern continues into midweek and beyond. Winter impacts will be possible during the extended period, with chances for snow Saturday through at least Monday. At this distance, details remain uncertain; however, there is a strong signal for a wetter pattern heading into the end of the week. This will be supported by the development of a relatively deep trough over the Pacific Northwest, with a weakening H5 ridge across the Southern Plains. Temperatures from Wednesday through Monday will be near seasonal averages. Highs in the single digits to low 20s are expected Wednesday, with warmer highs for Thursday and Friday. At the surface, southerly winds on Wednesday and Thursday turn westerly on Friday, allowing temperatures to climb. The primary concern during the extended period is the persistence of ensembles regarding a potential system towards the end of the week and into Saturday and Sunday. Moisture will advect into the region ahead of the system, with a deep southerly fetch of moisture out of the Gulf region. Should this transpire, we could see heavy snow risk associated with any system that traverses the Plains and Upper Midwest. Confidence in any one solution at this point is very low, but it remains worth watching in the next several days. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night) Issued at 1155 PM CST Mon Feb 27 2023 VFR conditions should prevail through the TAF period through the first 12hr of the TAF period, though there could be patchy ground fog (low confidence).
