DJRWhat forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this river flood warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Grand Forks, ND wrote its last area forecast discussion before this river flood warning went out at Apr 17, 6:25 PM CDT, 3 hours 45 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Apr 17, 6:25 PM CDT, 3 hours 45 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Grand Forks ND 625 PM CDT Mon Apr 17 2023 .UPDATE... Issued at 625 PM CDT Mon Apr 17 2023 It is looking to be a quiet night, with winds becoming light and only some high thin cirrus spreading in. After peaking today in the 40s, lows tonight should fall back below freezing, into the 20s. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday night) Issued at 339 PM CDT Mon Apr 17 2023 Today and Tuesday Weather impacts are not anticipated today or Tuesday as mostly sunny skies prevail across the area. High pressure continues to dominate the Northern Plains through the remainder of the day as a shortwave H5 ridge pushes to the east. Look for an increase in high clouds during the overnight period, with a continued expansion of cloud cover during the day Tuesday. This will be in response to an approaching upper low that is expected to impact the area by mid- week. Highs for Tuesday will range from the low 40s in the Devils Lake Basin, to the low 50s in west-central Minnesota. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 339 PM CDT Mon Apr 17 2023 H5 low pressure impacts the area starting early Wednesday, with precipitation chances increasing late Tuesday night. Temperatures early Wednesday morning support snow from the Hwy 200 corridor and points north, but then rebound late in the morning, with snow changing to rain. Showers prevail across the area through much of Wednesday afternoon before changing back to snow late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The majority of ensemble members keep precipitation type as all snow during the day Thursday; however, with temperatures climbing above freezing, accumulations will be inhibited. Currently, the probability of receiving 1 inch or more snow is around 50 percent for Thursday into Thursday night, with the best chances occurring along and north of Hwy 200. Friday through Sunday: A chance for light snow lingers into Friday and Saturday , along with cooler than average temperatures. Highs are only expected to reach the 30s Friday and Saturday, with 40s on Sunday. It is uncertain at this time how much moisture will be available ahead of a second H5 low that traverses the region late Saturday. Current guidance keeps the flow rather transient during this period, which should serve to limit precipitation amounts. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening) Issued at 625 PM CDT Mon Apr 17 2023 Only thing to note for this set of TAFs will be changing wind directions. North winds early this evening will become light, then they will switch around to the east-southeast on Tuesday. && .HYDROLOGY...(Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 400 PM CDT Mon Apr 17 2023 Snowmelt continues across the Red River basin, with meltwater beginning to enter the river system in spots where it had been previously slow to enter. Overall, river responses are becoming more widespread, and are expected to continue to increase in the coming days. Temperatures trend toward normal to below normal through the week with the snowpack melt progression continuing through the week. The rate of rise and ultimate crests remain uncertain due to forecast temperatures, ongoing snowmelt runoff, and additional precipitation chances expected this week. However it is looking more likely that southern valley crests could come this weekend into early next week, with northern valley crests toward next week into early May. Overland flooding continues across much of the area. Areal flood warnings remain in effect to account for an increase in overland flooding across the basin. As the meltwater increases across the area, increases in overland flooding especially in areas of southeastern ND are expected. Ice jams remain a contributor to flooding in the Crookston area and near Neche. The Pembina River near Neche has rapidly risen today due to the ice jam, and is expected to continue to rise into tomorrow. Previous ice jam history with that amount of water flow has put the river back into moderate flooding, and that trend is possible again with the ice jamming currently ongoing. && .FGF WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
