Clouds and virga continue to cover the area. This evening, the air
should saturate enough with the trough passage to have some
showers begin to form in SE ND and slowly spread north and
eastward. Forecast remains on track.

.SHORT TERM...(This afternoon through Sunday)
Issued at 310 PM CDT Thu Apr 13 2023

-Several periods of light (possibly moderate) rain showers and
isolated thunderstorms move through the region tonight into this
weekend. This may help accelerate the melt of lingering snow pack
particularly where moderate rainfall occurs.

-A brief mix or changeover to snow is possible Saturday into Sunday
morning as much cooler temperatures arrive. Travel impacts are not
anticipated as even light accumulation (dusting to 1") will be very
low.

SW flow aloft is in place with elevated WAA and steep 2-6km lapse
rates supporting occasional showers, however as based remain very
high the actual amounts reaching the surface have been less than
0.1" where they occur. Moisture advection is shown to increase as
the main mid/upper trough transitions east, and a more organized
impulse of PVA moves into the region later tonight into Friday along
with a cold front later Friday into Friday night. MUCAPE increases
across our south-southeast in the warm sector (100-300 J/KG), but
mid level lapse rates may still be steep enough for organized
showers (moderate) to form. HREF shows a more organized period of
showers by Friday morning transitioning quickly east through the day.
6hr probs for QPF 0.25" or more with this round are less than 20%,
so we are likely looking at a widespread light rain event with
isolated moderate pockets.

As the trough moves east it is shown to pass over our CWA as an open
wave, with a cold front possibly followed by drier northerly flow
which could lead to a sharp cutoff in where any additional precip
lingers. There is only a subset of clusters showing a more organized
700MB low and inverted trough close to our MN counties, which will
be the determining favor on lingering moderate (brief heavy?)
precipitation rates and current trends are showing this towards the
east/southeast if it happens (24hr probs for 0.25"+ QPF has
decreased as a result of this trend for this weekend). How long this
lingers will also determine whether there could be a change over to
snow on the back side of the system as CAA increases (probs for
0.5"+ snow are less than 20%).

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Thursday)

Evolution of the pattern will be back towards shortwave
ridging/rising heights later Sunday night into early next week,
which should support moderating temperatures and a break in
organized precipitation chances. There is decent agreement/clustering
in the large scale evolution of this ridge as it transitions east.
However, there is still increasing spread regarding the western
flank of the ridge and how the pattern evolves aloft. There is a
general trend towards west-southwest flow, which could allow for
additional precip chances (though the features are subtle/less
organized through Tuesday night). There is a signal for another
possible organized mid-upper low towards the middle to later part of
next week, that could bring better rain chances. There is high
variation with 5 different clusters showing different
timing/evolution of the pattern in those periods. It will still need
to be monitored as at least some potential for higher precipitation
amounts (24hr probs of 1"+ QPF of 5-10% Wednesday into Thursday).

conditions. Showers and thunderstorms are moving into SE ND, and
should move north and east in Friday. Winds will shift as a
surface trough passes through, shifting to the north and picking
up to 10-15 kts sustained into Friday morning and afternoon.

Temperatures above freezing over the last several days is creating
snow melt, with some areas in the southern basin seeing most of the
snowpack melted. Temperatures will cool over the next few days
slowing the rate of melt with low temperatures dropping below
freezing. However, this will be short lived and temperatures will
rebound early next week. Overall, this is expected to further ripen
the snow pack where it still exists and, with anticipated continued
melting, will cause increased flows of water into the rivers. There
will be variations as to degree of snow melt depending on how high
temperatures will get over the next four to seven days. This will
impact rate of rise in many locations, with some rivers responding
quickly and other forecast points seeing a delay in rising levels.
At this time, precipitation will be limited. However, if rainfall
occurs later over the next few days, it will have an impact on
