Flurries/light snow continues over the far northern RRV but has
showing decreasing trends. There are some pockets of dense ground
fog that formed in the Sheyenne River Valley (Cooperstown to
Valley City), but the obs have been sporadic/impacts very
localized.

UPDATE Issued at 606 AM CST Fri Mar 10 2023

Winds have come down, and although there are still winter impacts
in areas due to overnight light snow, there has been some
improvement and the no travel advisory has been lifted. Let the
advisory expire at 12Z. Could see a few lingering flurries, but
otherwise we should be in a bit of a lull through the rest of the
day.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday)
Issued at 319 AM CST Fri Mar 10 2023

The severity of winter impacts will be the main challenge for the
period.

For the immediate term, there continues to be some light snow
across much of the CWA. While additional accumulations are
expected to be well under an inch, there is still some impacts
from falling and blowing snow, with no travel advised in the
Valley City area. Think there should be some decrease in snow
shower coverage as the main lead shortwave pulls away from the
area, although flurries could linger on and off for much of the
day. The pressure gradient rapidly improves this morning, and the
high March sun angle will help improve conditions after sunrise.
Will keep the advisory going through 12Z, but at this point think
there should be some improvement as we go into Friday.

The break in conditions will be short lived, as the upper low over
the Pac NW moves into eastern MT tonight and out into northern ND
on Saturday. Some of the recent CAM runs track the system a bit
further north with more impacts in Canada, but with recent
northward bias will lean more towards the global models which are
fairly consistent. The somewhat stacked low will move across the
region tonight into Saturday, with warm air advection bringing
good synoptic lift across most of the northern Plains. 700mb
frontogenesis weakens a bit as it moves east into our area, but
think there will still be plenty for mesoscale banding potential.
NBM probabilities for 6 inches or more are over 60 percent for all
but our far northeastern counties by 00Z, and the probs for over
10 inches are still fairly high, in the 50 to 80 percent range,
for portions of eastern ND. Impacts from heavy snow are very
likely, the main question being timing and what areas will see
blizzard conditions. Blowing snow model rapidly ramps up
probabilities of less than half a mile tonight, but seems mainly

uncertainty if impacts will start this evening or wait until later
tonight/Saturday morning, will keep us in the watch for now.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday)

Saturday night and Sunday...Winter storm will be ongoing as the
upper low wobbles into the Red River Valley and then off into MN
by the end of the weekend. High NBM probabilities of over 6
inches of snow progress into western MN by Sunday morning, so will
expand the watch further east. There will be a lull in the winds
Saturday night as the surface low passes over the Red River
Valley. However, the northwest winds and cold air advection will
kick in behind the low, and winds and blowing snow potential will
pick back up again. Winter impacts will continue for at least part
of the day on Sunday even as falling snow starts to wind down.

Overview:

Lingering blowing snow impacts are possible Sunday night as the main
low pressure exits the region. Hazardous travel is possible, but the
main impacts will be during the morning timeframe Sunday. Near
seasonal temperatures next week, with an active pattern potential.

Sunday Night and onward...

Lingering blowing snow will be possible Sunday evening and overnight
as the main low pressure system exists the region. Patchy snow
showers are possible from the cold air advection wrapping around the
main system. Recent snowfall across the region combined with 20-25kt
sustained winds and gusts nearing 30kts could bring blowing snow
impacts. The severity is less certain on Sunday evening and
overnight, but the chances are there for at least minor impacts.
Soundings show sufficient, but shallow mixing near the surface with
lapse rates around 6.5-7.5 C/km. Confidence is low on the strength
of the winds and how long they will be sustained at 20-25kts.
However, in any isolated snow showers combined with stronger winds
visibility reductions are possible especially away from urbanized
areas. We will continue to monitor the lingering impacts from the
storm system affecting the region over the weekend.

Cluster analysis early to mid next week show varying shifts of upper
level flow. 25% of clusters indicate SW flow, 50% show zonal flow,
and 25% show ridging building into the region. The 75% chance is
there for a more active pattern to develop across the northern
plains, while the lower chance of 25% is there for a quieter pattern
set up. Ensembles have indicated a vast array of potentials, but are
clustering further toward a more active pattern during the mid week
time frame. Confidence is low on the placement, development, and
track of any type of system. However, signals are there that an
active pattern is possible mid week, with the potential for systems
to move and affect the central and northern plains.

Pockets of stratus and ground fog have been clearing early in the
TAF period across eastern ND with VFR prevailing at most
terminals (lingering IFR at KDVL). A winter storm should develop
west to east later tonight with IFR to VLIFR aviation impacts due
to heavy snow and blowing snow. This should last through midday
Saturday (end of the TAF period) with a period of improvement
possible Saturday afternoon or evening before conditions possibly
deteriorate later tonight into Sunday.

Some lingering flurries today, but otherwise a bit of a lull
before snow starts in earnest tonight. Snow will begin to move
into the Devils Lake basin by late evening and push eastward
during the morning hours. Increasing winds from the southeast will
bring a combination of falling and blowing snow that will
severely limit visibility late tonight and blizzard conditions
will be possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Accumulating snow will continue into Saturday and Sunday. There is
high probability (over 70 percent) of over 6 inches of snow and
even some lower probabilities of 12 inches in northeastern North
Dakota. Gusty southeast winds on Saturday will diminish a bit
Saturday night, but pick up again behind the system from the north
on Sunday into Sunday night. However, there still some
uncertainty in how strong these winds will be. Snow covered roads
and significant reductions to visibility are possible from heavy
snow or blowing snow.
