* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 31 expected.

* WHERE...Portions of central, east central, north central,

* WHEN...From 2 AM to 10 AM EDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other
  sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor
  plumbing.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent
freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should
be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have
in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-
ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

.SHORT TERM...

As a deep trough and associated surface low continue to move
eastward into the Atlantic ocean, northwesterly upper level flow
will set up over Georgia ahead of a pronounced ridge centered over
the Great Plains and High Plains. Surface high pressure will build
into the Southeast CONUS ahead of the ridge as it translates
eastward over the course of the short term period. The influence of
the high will keep skies mostly clear and inhibit rain chances.
However, as is often the case under northwesterly flow and high
pressure in March, freezing temperatures, frost, and fire weather
will be the primary concerns today and Wednesday.

Winds have stayed breezy so far this morning, which has inhibited
radiational cooling. However, low temperatures this morning are
expected to be in the mid to upper 20s roughly to the north of I-85
and in the 30s to the south. Locations in the higher elevations of
far northeast Georgia could furthermore see temperatures in the low
20s. The Freeze Warning has been maintained for areas north of a
line from Harris to Jones to Hancock counties through 11 AM EDT this
morning. Some patchy frost will also be possible to the south of the
existing Freeze Warning. Winds will pick up once again by this
afternoon, with northwesterly low level winds increasing to 10-15
mph with gusts of 20-25 mph before diminishing once again overnight.
High temperatures this afternoon are forecast to be in the upper 40s
to low 50s in northwest Georgia and in the mid to upper 50s
elsewhere across the forecast area. With strong diurnal mixing
anticipated, have elected to run on the lower side of dewpoint
guidance, and blended in hi-res solutions. As a result, RH values
are forecast to drop below 25 percent for a few hours in portions of
central and east Georgia this afternoon and early evening.
Considering NW winds also continue to dry out 10 hr fuels across the
area, a Fire Danger Statement has been issued for this afternoon and
evening.

Winds will begin to diminish after sunset as the center of the
surface high draws closer to the forecast area. Low temperatures
Wednesday morning are expected to be cooler compared to this
morning, dropping into the 20s and low 30s area-wide. The existing
Freeze Watch remains in effect from 11 PM EDT this evening until 11
AM EDT Wednesday morning, but has been expanded southward and now
includes all but our far southeastern counties. This Watch will
likely be upgraded to a Freeze Warning in the next several hours.
With lighter winds overnight, the development of patchy frost will
also be more likely compared to this morning. Temperatures will
begin to moderate under the high on Wednesday, rising into the upper
50s to low 60s in the afternoon. With a dry airmass and strong
diurnal mixing still expected, minimum RH values are expected to
drop below critical thresholds across the area on Wednesday, ranging
from 17-22 percent, which will likely warrant another Fire Danger
Statement.

(Wednesday night through Monday)

Moving into Thursday, the center of the surface high that has
supported a multi-day stretch of clear and dry conditions is
situated across the Southeast, and, like the axis of our weak mid-
level ridging, will begin to be pushed offshore. However, with
northwesterly winds aloft supporting continued CAA, along with
moistening near the surface aided by winds shifting to the
south/southeast, conditions will be ripe for frost development on
its way out. Low temperatures look to be right around/just a few
degrees below freezing for areas along and north of a line extending
from Macon to Columbus, so assuming trends continue, a Frost
Advisory (and perhaps a Freeze Watch) will likely be needed
Wednesday night into Thursday morning. On a semi-related note, with
such dry air lingering through the column, caution will need to be
taken regarding Fire Weather concern Thursday, as minimum values of
RH look to dip below critical thresholds.

Moving into the Friday to Saturday timeframe, our mid-to-upper level
flow pattern becomes much more progressive, with a stout trough
digging southward across the Northern Plains (ensembles prog the
associated 500mb height anomaly ~1-2 stdev below average). Strong
surface cyclogenesis accompanies this, with an expansive frontal
boundary beginning to sweep eastward across the Deep South by mid-
day Friday. Currently, and as has been the case in previous events,
we look to be well-removed from strongest synoptic-scale forcing
(with the parent low situated across the Great Lakes). However,
subsequent runs of global models suggest our primary features of
concern will be a series of lobes of low pressure that develop
across the Gulf Coast in the vicinity of several shortwave
disturbances rounding the base of the broader trough. This combined
with the formation of a jet streak across the ArkLaMiss to the Ohio
River Valley in response to confluent flow aloft seems to support
low-end potential for a high-shear, low-CAPE setup Friday afternoon
into Saturday... with the caveat being that instability is looking
very anemic (even by HSLC standards) for now. Our forecast area does
not look to fall within favorable regions of jet dynamics at present
to support mention of potential for severe weather, but much can
(and likely will) change between now and then. Either way, this is
certainly something that bears watching over the next several days,
and at the very least looks to support periods of heavy rainfall.

Following the passage of this system, another surface high slides
into place to dry the region back out and support another cold snap
Sunday and Monday morning, with lows once again in the upper-20s to
low-30s. Otherwise, highs look to be in the upper-60s to 70s through
Friday, and in the 50s after the frontal passage.
