Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio TX 725 PM CST Sun Jan 29 2023 ...New UPDATE... .UPDATE... Issued at 723 PM CST Sun Jan 29 2023 A quick update issued to account for the rapid cooling trends over Central TX. With this are deviating the most from the forecast trends, the min temps for AUS and areas north were bumped down a degree or two. Rest of the forecast is in good shape. && .SHORT TERM... (Tonight through Monday night) Issued at 313 PM CST Sun Jan 29 2023 Radar trends show a gradual weakening of returns across the Hill Country, with light showers continuing across portions of the coastal plains. A few lightning strikes are noted east of Highway 77 and for the remainder of this afternoon, it looks like any stronger convection will remain across far eastern Fayette and Lavaca counties. Otherwise, we are seeing a clearing trend from west to east across the region as subsidence behind some mid-level disturbances temporarily moves across the region. A cold front can also be seen in surface observations and visible satellite imagery and currently stretches from southern Llano into northwest Williamson county. Early this evening, some lingering showers will be possible across the coastal plains, especially DeWitt and Lavaca counties. Additional rainfall amounts will likely remain below one-tenth of an inch. Otherwise, look for some brief clearing this evening before low clouds develop behind the above mentioned cold front. Overnight lows will be much colder for most of south central Texas, with lower 30s in the Hill Country to the lower 50s along the Rio Grande. Precipitation chances will return to the region on Monday as the shallow, cold air undercuts the warm and moist air in place. Outside of far northern Burnet county, we expect temperatures to be warm enough for all liquid Monday morning. However, this will change as cold air advection increases and weak upper disturbances in the southwest flow aloft move across the region. Forecast soundings show the initial concerns for rain mixing with freezing rain will begin across the Hill Country early Monday afternoon with temperatures beginning to trend closer to freezing in the higher terrain. The freezing rain potential continues across the Hill Country Monday evening and Monday night with cold air advection continuing at the surface and weak disturbances moving in from the southwest. We have kept the dominant winter precipitation type as freezing rain for now based on the shallow, cold air near the surface. Some brief sleet may occur in heavier showers, but prefer to leave this out of the forecast at this time. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued beginning early Monday afternoon through the morning hours on Wednesday. It is important to note that we will likely not see a continuous period of wintry precipitation through the duration of the Watch. Much will hinge on surface temperatures and it appears the late evening through mid morning hours Monday/Tuesday and again Tuesday/Wednesday will be favored for ice accumulations. Our main concern for ice accumulation is across the higher terrain of the Hill Country. However, we did include Williamson and Travis counties in the Winter Storm Watch, mainly to account for the higher terrain in the western portions of these counties. As of now, any ice accumulations would be favored over the western portions of Williamson and Travis counties, generally west of the Austin metro area. && .LONG TERM... (Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 313 PM CST Sun Jan 29 2023 ...Increasing Potential for Freezing Rain/Freezing Drizzle Monday afternoon through Wednesday morning... Key Messages: 1) Repeated rounds of light to moderate precipitation are expected through mid-week as a cold airmass remains in place at the surface. 2) Ice accumulation due to freezing rain/drizzle is possible across the Hill Country where temperatures are forecast to be the coldest. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Monday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Please see the text product associated with the Watch for more information on forecast ice accumulations, associated impacts, and precautionary actions. 3) While precipitation is expected to be fairly continuous through Thursday, temperatures will not be at or below freezing across the watch area for the entire time. The main period of concern for freezing rain/drizzle in the long term will be Tuesday morning and Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The Tuesday through Wednesday morning timeframe will see persistent warm and moist air advection within the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere over a shallow cold airmass at the surface. Then, late Wednesday into Thursday, an upper level trough will quickly move into and through the region from the southwest. The result is expected to be a fairly continuous period of widespread precipitation through Thursday morning across south-central TX. The main periods of concern for impacts due to freezing rain will be Tuesday morning and Tuesday night into Wednesday morning when temperatures are at their coldest. The exact location and duration of freezing temperatures remains the most difficult part of this forecast due to due the shallow depth of the cold airmass, terrain influences in the Hill Country, and the resulting lack of consistency across model guidance. At this time however, the best potential for freezing rain accumulation appears to line up pretty well with the Escarpment, with much of the freezing rain accumulation expected to be across the Hill Country. As of now, the I-35 corridor is NOT expected to be impacted. However, if temperatures become just slightly colder than what is currently forecast then this could change, so it will be important to stay tuned to the latest forecast updates. As the aforementioned upper trough approaches Wednesday into Thursday, low temperatures will warm to above freezing across all of south-central Texas, so no freezing rain is expected beyond Wednesday morning. Precipitation will clear from west to east through the day Thursday, with fair weather expected through the remainder of the period as high pressure moves in at both the upper and lower levels. With a drier airmass also moving in in the wake of the exiting trough, lows are expected to cool again with widespread morning temperatures in the 30s for Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will be able to warm significantly during the day, however, so warmer highs in the 50s and 60s can be expected heading into the weekend. A reinforcing weak and dry cold front looks to arrive during the day Sunday. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 544 PM CST Sun Jan 29 2023 Dense post frontal air is bringing an MVFR cig into AUS while the MAV and MET guidance have no idea what's going on. Thus the TAFs for this cycle will continue a somewhat simple layout. Over DRT/SAT/SSF MVFR cigs may lag behind the front a couple hours since mixing was more prolific through the afternoon. MVFR cigs should develop by mid evening at SAT/SSF, but probably not until after midnight at DRT. The denser air mass over AUS could occur before 04Z as an IFR cig has already been noted at nearby GTU. While model confidence in the MOS guidance was tested in this 00Z TAF update, we'll keep with a general trend of steady IFR skies for the latter periods and adjust to a more pessimistic solutions if necessary. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
