.SYNOPSIS...A weakening cold front will bring very light rain to
areas North of Cape Mendocino today. However, cool and mainly dry
weather will occur across Northwest California through Friday.
Thereafter, a winter storm is forecast to impact the region
Saturday through early next week, with heavy snow occurring for
elevations above 1000 feet, along with hail, sleet, and a few
thunderstorms developing along the coast.

.DISCUSSION...Latest GOES-West satellite imagery shows high
clouds spreading across Northern California this morning, while
low clouds extended well up the Eel River as well as the Klamath,
and Trinity Rivers. Hard freeze conditions have been difficult to
reach this morning with the increasing cloudiness along with
light offshore flow. Surface observations reported temperatures as
low as 30 degrees along the coast, with interior valleys raging
from mid 20s to low 30s.
High pressure will continue to move east across the West Coast to
give way to an approaching weak cold front this afternoon. This
will bring some light rain showers to areas North of Cape
Mendocino, mainly for Del rainfall total amounts from few
hundredths to a tenth of an inch. Otherwise, generally dry weather
is expected to continue through Friday.
Heading through Saturday, a potent cold upper trough with 500 mb
temperatures from -32 to -36C will dig south-southeastward from
the Gulf of Alaska into the West Coast. The most recent operational
models are suggesting temperature aloft of -5C at 850 mb, -16C at
700 mb, and -37C at 500 mb. The cold airmass will aid in the
development of steep lapse rates promoting heavy precipitation
along with isolated thunderstorms and accumulating small hail
along the coast early Saturday into Sunday. Gusts from 30 to 40
mph are expected over the coastal headland and ridges ahead of
the frontal boundary.
Mountain snow is the number one of concerns with this system. Heavy
snow, with storm total accumulations at or above 1-2.5 feet
across the higher ridges, will be probable from Saturday morning
through early next week. Snow levels will be generally above 1000
feet. However, uncertainty exist with snow levels due to it could
be lower during convective showers. Travel impacts are expected
from Saturday into early next week.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions are predominantly expected until this
afternoon and evening along the coast, where MVFR ceilings and
visibilities are anticipated as a cold front approaches. Wind
direction will become north northwest behind the cold front
this evening. There is also potential for some drizzle/light rain
this afternoon/evening in association with the cold front passage.
Any precipitation should taper off by late Thursday night and VFR
conditions are expected to return to the coast. UKI should remain
VFR throughout this forecast.

.MARINE...Northerlies continue easing early this morning
while a northwest swell decays. Northerlies may briefly turn
southwest for some areas just ahead of an approaching cold front
from the northwest, then wind will become north northwest behind
the cold front with increasing speed. For today, southern outer
and inner waters are in a continued small craft advisory. Southern
outer and inner waters may very briefly dip a bit below criteria
later this morning, but will quickly return to small craft
advisory criteria this afternoon behind the passing cold front
with increased wind speeds and wave heights. The new northwest
swell on Friday will build in and create small craft advisory
conditions, resulting in a small craft advisory for all waters
Friday through early Sunday morning.
