.SYNOPSIS...Cool and dry fall-like weather will prevail across
northern California through the weekend. Gusty ridgetop winds will
be probable Saturday night, and that will be followed by a return
to wet weather by the middle of next week.

.DISCUSSION...Moist westerlies were spreading east toward the CA
coast this afternoon. However, an upper-level shortwave trough was
also digging south across the PACNW. The northern stream feature
will preclude deep-layer moisture from penetrating inland this
evening...and thus the forecast remains dry for the EKA CWA.
Otherwise, an increase in mid and high level clouds will cause
overnight lows to be a few degrees warmer across inland valleys
compared to Wednesday night. Nevertheless, another round of frost
and freeze conditions will be likely for colder interior wind
sheltered valleys.
Attention then turns to the weekend, which will feature an upper-
level shortwave trough moving south across the Great Basin into
the SWRN CONUS. Offshore-directed winds will develop in the wake
of the upper wave, with gusts from 30-50 mph becoming probable
across many exposed ridges, particularly Saturday night into
Sunday morning. Winds will then weaken by Sunday afternoon. Going
into early next week, an upper ridge located over the NERN PAC is
forecast to break down. A series of upper disturbances will then
move east across the West Coast and aid in periods of rain,
potentially locally heavy, during mid to late next week.

.AVIATION...Widespread clearing will soon be interspersed with
high cirrus moving into the region. VFR will prevail across all
forecast terminals through the remainder of the day and evening,
with very light offshore flow helping to keep visibilities clear
overnight. As an upper level shortwave edges into the PNW,
ceilings could descend to 10,000 to 15,000 ft beneath a scattered
cirrus layer early Friday morning. UKI is expected to dip into the
30's again tonight, but a lack of adequate moisture may prevent a
low level cloud layer from obscuring the valley. Light winds and
VFR conditions are expected to continue Friday.

.MARINE...Generally gentle to moderate northerly breezes from 5
to 15 kt are forecast through tonight and much of Friday.
Thereafter, gusts to 30 kt are forecast to develop across the
outer waters Friday afternoon through Saturday evening. Steep
short period seas to 8 feet combined with the gusty winds will
yield small craft conditions. Northerly winds and steep waves
will begin to diminish on Sunday and continue to trend down on
Monday.

.FIRE WEATHER...An exceptionally dry airmass with dewpoints near
0F and RH values in the low teens will spread across NRN CA
Saturday and Sunday as an upper-level disturbance slides south
across the Great Basin and into the SWRN CONUS. In addition, cold
air spreading toward the region will force the development of
strong east-northeast winds, with gusts across ridgetops ranging
from 30-50 mph. The combination of strong winds, low daytime RH
values, and very poor overnight humidity recoveries will yield a
critical fire weather threat from SRN Trinity across Lake and ERN
Mendocino Counties, with the most severe combination of strong
winds and low RH expected Saturday evening through Sunday morning.
