AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 413 AM PDT Sun Sep 17 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are forecast to occur across the interior mountains this afternoon, and again during Monday afternoon. Drier weather will then develop early next week, followed by possibly cooler and wet weather late next week. && .DISCUSSION...A quasi-stationary upper low was positioned offshore from the Golden Gate terrain gap early Sunday morning. Modest mid/upper-level ascent and moistening was occurring downstream from the low over NRN CA. That regime combined with daytime heating and subsequent boundary layer destabilization across the Yolla Bolly and Klamath/Trinity Mountains will support another round of isolated shower/thunderstorm development this afternoon and evening, particularly across Trinity County. Model guidance yields an additional convective signal over roughly the same locations during Monday afternoon/evening. Impacts associated with these storms will be an increased risk of fire starts, as well as dangerous lightning and sub-severe hail/wind. Model guidance shows a weak cold front moving south across the region Monday night into Tuesday. The front will be dry, and will aid in clearing out convective potential, and also potentially increase the chances for stratus dissipation along the coast during the afternoon hours. Otherwise, confidence is increasing in an upper-level pattern evolution featuring a cold trough digging south from the PACNW into NRN CA Wednesday and Thursday. Cooler temperatures will be probable with that disturbance, and showers may form as cold air aloft and interior mountain afternoon heating yield a steep lapse rate environment. The potential for continued unsettled weather will exist next weekend as some model guidance shows a second trough deepening over the NERN PAC and aiding in a more organized rainfall event approaching the WA/OR coast, and perhaps points south along the NRN CA coast. Garner && .AVIATION...Coastal stratus persists this morning, with LIFR ceilings and mostly MVFR visibilities. Visibilities at the immediate coast may briefly dip down to IFR around sunrise before improving again later this morning. Ceilings are expected to remain LIFR to IFR for the coast through the day today and into tonight. Profiler data from Bodega Bay is indicating a deeper marine layer tonight over Sonoma county, and satellite data is showing much more expansive cloud coverage for areas south and west of KUKI. Ceilings are expected to move northward over KUKI early this morning, then mix out a little before noon. This pattern is not expected to significantly change across the region during the upcoming TAF period, although a slowly approaching low may deepen the marine layer and lift ceilings a bit...so expect another night of LIFR/IFR ceilings at the coast, along with IFR to MVFR ceilings overnight for portions of interior Mendo. && .MARINE...Winds remain light and diurnal near the northern coast today, with weak coastal southerlies from Pt Arena to the Eel Delta, while northerlies of about 20 kts develop this morning in the western portion of the northern outers. This pattern is expected to persist today, then northerlies are expected to quickly ramp up and spread to the southern outers Monday afternoon. Northerlies continue to accelerate during Monday night, possibly reaching gale force in the northern outer waters Tuesday afternoon and evening. Short period waves are mostly confined to the northern outers through Monday morning, while a few small mid period WNW swells and long period SW swells continue through. Short period seas quickly spread to all zones by Tuesday. A more significant NW swell is expected to quickly fill in Monday night, currently forecasted to peak early Tuesday morning around 9 to 10 ft at 15 seconds. This looks to be reinforced Wednesday night by another NW swell, peaking around 7 ft at 15 sec. && .FIRE WEATHER...Isolated thunderstorms are forecast to occur across portions of central and eastern Trinity County as well as northeastern Mendocino County this afternoon and evening. Isolated to scattered storms will then be possible Monday afternoon and evening over much of the the same area. These storms are forecast to be a mix of wet and dry, and thus will pose at least a slight risk for additional fire starts. Otherwise, a dry cold front is forecast to move south across NRN CA Monday night into Tuesday.
