AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 235 PM PDT Sat Aug 26 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will be near to slightly below normal across Northwest California during much of the next seven days. In addition, breezy northwest winds are forecast to occur next week, and cool showery conditions may spread across the region late next week. && .DISCUSSION...An upper low was positioned offshore from OR this afternoon. Dry subsident southwesterly flow aloft was occurring along the south-southeast periphery of the low over NRN CA. Dry weather and seasonable temperatures were subsequently observed across the EKA CWA. Going into early next week, the upper low is forecast to open up into a trough and eject east across WA/OR during Tuesday. A tight post-trough surface pressure gradient combined with brisk north-northwesterly gradient flow in the 925-850 mb layer will favor winds gusting to 30 mph across exposed ridges, coastal headlands, and terrain gaps from roughly Tuesday through mid to late week. In addition, a second upper trough is forecast to dig south along the coast of NWRN CA during next Friday and Saturday. Increasing ascent and deep layer moistening occurring within the downstream portion of the trough combined with cold air aloft and resultant steep lapse rates will support shower and possible thunderstorm development over NWRN CA during the extended range forecast period. Garner && .AVIATION...Widespread stratus remains entrenched along the coast this afternoon. Smoke from nearby wildfires continues to impact CEC, and somewhat at ACV. Ceilings are lifting the IFR/MVFR levels. Overnight, ceilings will trend back down to IFR/LIFR level. By the early morning hours, expect more solid LIFR ceilings and visibility, with a chance for TEMPO FG. Smoke will continue to impact CEC, especially overnight through the morning hours. Ceilings will begin to lift towards the end of the 18Z TAF period. && .MARINE...Light winds persist today with seas less than 5 feet in all zones. The NE Pacific upper low parked offshore, responsible for this relative tranquility will begin nudging back NW Sunday. As weak high pressure fills in, the northerlies in the southern zones around the cape will slowly trend upward and expand in coverage beginning Sunday afternoon. The low will kick eastward Tuesday, when northerlies will further strengthen and begin expanding northward to include the northern zones. Seas remain primarily locally generated, tied to the nearshore northerlies...although a small mix of NW and SW swells move through the weekend and next week. && .FIRE WEATHER...A series of upper disturbances moving across the region next week will aid in north-northwest winds gusting to 30 mph across exposed ridges and through terrain gaps from roughly Tuesday through mid to late next week. Temperatures will not be particularly warm during that time period, and relative humidity values will not be substantially low, but locally elevated fire weather conditions will be possible due to the gusty winds. In addition, multi-model guidance is beginning to support a cool showery weather regime over NWRN CA late next week, which could aid in mitigating ongoing fire activity.
