THURSDAY NIGHT...

* WHAT...Southeast winds 20 to 30 kt with gusts up to 40 kt and 
  seas 7 to 10 feet possible.

* WHERE...Pt St George to Cape Mendocino out 10 nm and Cape 
  Mendocino to Pt Arena out 10 nm.

* WHEN...From Wednesday evening through late Thursday night.

* IMPACTS...Strong winds can cause hazardous seas which could 
  capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Mariners should consider altering plans to avoid possible
hazardous conditions.  Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter
course, and/or secure the vessel for severe wind and seas.

.SYNOPSIS...Dry conditions are expected to last into Friday with
temperatures warming to above average into tomorrow afternoon. By
this weekend, wetter and chillier conditions are expected to return
with rain and mountain snow possible.

.DISCUSSION...A strong high pressure system over the NE Pacific will
keep conditions mild across Northwest California for the rest of the
week. This high pressure system is expected to strengthen into
tomorrow. This will favor offshore flow with breezy east-
northeasterly winds over the ridges and increasingly dry air. A
strong pressure gradient along the coast will help to keep that
offshore wind component throughout the end of the week. Some coastal
afternoon temperatures are anticipated to reach into the 60s, while
interior valleys may potentially reach near 70, especially in
southern Mendocino County. However, north facing beaches may get
more of an onshore flow and as a result this might keep
temperatures down in these locations. Winds at ridgetops around
Lake county and some ridgetops in more northern areas of the
region are expected to be especially breezy into tomorrow
afternoon. Winds and temperatures will decrease into the end of
the work week as the high pressure system will be pushed west and
away from the region as a low pressure system drops down the West
Coast from the north.

A pattern change is forecast for the weekend. Ensemble models and
cluster analysis are in more of an agreement on the placement of an
upper level trough over the region. It is forecast to drop southward
over the West Coast this weekend and into early next week. An
increase in high-level clouds will spread through Northern
California as the trough approaches. Also, light rain is expected
later in the weekend and into early next week. Ensemble models
indicate that the trough will bring colder air to the region with
minimum temperatures potentially reaching freezing along the coast
by early next week. The ECMWF Extreme Forecast Index (EFI) indicates
a strong likelihood of colder temperatures in the region for the
beginning of next week.
Snow levels are anticipated to drop to about 2000 ft MSL, especially
in northern Trinity county. Light mountain snow is a definite
possibility for early next week. There are still some
discrepancies with the deterministic models in the timing and
location of the trough, but as the event approaches there will be
more confidence in the details.

.AVIATION...Mostly benign flying weather conditions continued across Northwest
California today. However, there are a few "lesser" impact flight
hazards that occurred today:  Along the far North Coast, An offshore
flow and fairly tight gradient, associated with an inverted
(thermal) trough, caused moderate breezes to diurnally rev up this
afternoon at CEC. Model data indicated weak LLWS at CEC and ACV
around 2000 feet overnight/morning. MVFR hazy Vis at the coast with
reported IFR CIG and VIS was due to sea spray...particularly at CEC.
The Mendocino Coast had a surge of stratus in the early hours, but
those conditions have since pushed offshore to the southwest.  Model
data is indicating a slight possibility of LLWS at UKI Thursday
morning, but confidence is quite low at this time. Otherwise,
expecting mostly SKC to prevail at the terminals with maybe pockets
of MIFG in the morning and further HZ obstruction by mid-morning at
the coast. /TA

.MARINE...North winds will decrease markedly tonight as a thermal
trough pushes off the coast. This will result in light southerlies
developing off the Mendocino coast Thursday. Steep seas will subside
in response to the decreasing winds at the same time as the westerly
swell moving through the waters today decays. A period of sub-
headline winds and seas is expected for all waters except the N
outer water zone where a Small Craft Advisory will continue into the
weekend.

Northerlies will increase again Friday into the weekend as two lows
dive south along the coast tightening the pressure gradient. It is
possible winds could get quite strong Sunday into Monday with gales
