.SYNOPSIS...Coastal clouds will persist through much of the next
week. Across the interior, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are
expected today, with gradually decreasing chances through the
weekend. Temperatures along the coast will remain slightly below
normal. Temperatures across the interior will gradually warm
through the coming week.

.DISCUSSION...An upper low was centered over the WA Cascades this
afternoon, with the basal portion of the low situated across NRN
CA. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forming within that
feature, with local development focused over the Trinity Alps and
Yolla Bolly Mountains. Showers/storms will persist across the
interior mountains through evening, and then dissipate as the
boundary layer cools and stabilizes. Elsewhere, marine stratus
will persist along the coast, and penetrate inland tonight. The
weather pattern during the weekend is forecast to be similar to
today, though interior shower/thunderstorm probabilities are
expected to trend downward during the next several days.
Otherwise, seasonable weather conditions will occur through early
next week. Thereafter, multi-model guidance shows upper troughing
being replaced by the development of a West Coast ridge, which
will support much warmer high temperatures across interior
portions of NWRN CA during mid to late next week.

.AVIATION...A deeper marine layer resulted in the stratus layer
being able to spill into interior/coastal mountain valleys such as
UKI. Cloud bases were generally in MVFR category with Cig bases
averaging 1200- 2700 feet through morning. The Del Norte Coast and
portions of the Humboldt Coast were exceptions with Cigs remain
in IFR through most of the day due to the influence of an offshore
eddy. Do not expect significant mixing out of clouds today at the
coast due the amount of stratus intrusiveness and generally light
winds. Greater than 3000 feet cloud tops allowed for spillage
into near mountain valleys...especially in the southern most
flying areas. Across the interior mountain ranges...there is a
convective threat affecting general aviation this
afternoon/evening. Overnight, expect the coastal terminal to
continue with fog and stratus through Saturday morning. However,
UKI will not have the same southerly wind component, so do not
expect stratus to advect into the Valley... although spillage over
higher terrain could occur if the marine layer depth stays fairly
deep. /TA

.MARINE...Light to nearly calm westerly winds have persisted over
the waters today with a very light southerly breezes near shore.
Seas are mostly tranquil with residual short period seas below 4
feet. Surface low pressure moving onshore and east this weekend
will help build northerlies back. Gusts will reach near 21 kts in
the outer waters by late Saturday. NBM is indicating a brief
period of gale force gusts Sunday night, but most deterministic
models imply this forecast is a bit strong. In any case, steep
short period seas building near 9 feet during the day Sunday will
create hazardous conditions. NWPS shows the northern waters
staying more protected but waves will likely build above 6 feet in
the southern inner waters during the strongest winds. Advisories
have already been hoisted for the outer waters in response. /JHW
