.SYNOPSIS...Some light rain is moving into the area this
afternoon. Additional rain is expected Sunday with periods of
moderate rain. Heavier rain and periods of strong winds are
expected Monday and Tuesday. Drier weather is expected Wednesday
and Thursday with more rain possible late in the week.

.DISCUSSION...A warm front is moving across the area this
afternoon bringing light rain and snow to the area. Snow levels
are generally rising as expected. The challenge is in Trinity
county where there is a lot of uncertainty on when the snow levels
will rise. It doesn't look like they will stay as low as they did
in the last event, but they may be slow to rise. The current
forecast has them rising slower than the model guidance suggests,
but still rising above most hwy passes by Sunday night. So have
issued a winter weather advisory for snow above 3,000 feet in
northern Trinity county for tonight and Sunday. Elsewhere across
the area snow levels will be over 5000 to 6000 feet. Rainfall
amounts through he weekend will generally be fairly light with
only short periods of heavier rainfall on Sunday. The first round
of stronger winds is expected Sunday late in the afternoon and
evening. a few gusts of 45 mph are possible over the higher
terrain of Del Norte and northern Humboldt counties are possible,
but they don't look to be widespread and in populated areas enough
to warrant a wind advisory at this time.
Monday afternoon through Tuesday the Atmospheric river bringing
heavy rain is expected to move into the area. This is a rather
complex system with some model solutions showing a strong low
moving into the coast. There is a warm and moist airmass that will
likely yield considerable rain, but the timing and location is
still rather uncertain. Adding even more uncertainty is the
unusually deep snowpack. Above a certain elevation this will
likely just absorb much of the rainfall, but below that the
snowmelt will add to the runoff. As such, have not issued any
flood watches yet. The rivers are expected to rise with the Eel,
Navarro and the Russian rivers expected to reach flood stage.
This flooding isn't expected for several days so have held off on
watches for them as well.
Late Tuesday or Tuesday night the front moves through and snow
levels are expected to fall. There is still a lot of uncertainty
on how quickly these will fall and how much precipitation will
still be falling when they do fall. Currently have some light
snow amounts Tuesday night and Wednesday, but confidence is low on
these.
At some point Wednesday precip is expected to taper off, however
models are in poor agreement on the timing of this. Confidence is
higher that rain will end by Wednesday night. Early Thursday
morning fog is expected to develop in the inland valleys and may
be dense in some locations. Some areas may see freezing fog as
well. Dry weather is generally expected to continue into
Thursday. Late Thursday or early Friday another system is expected
to start to move into the area bring more rain and snow. At this
point it doesn't look notably cold or wet. MKK

.AVIATION...Rain showers are expected to affect the region throughout
the TAF period. Current radar shows showers moving through the area
from south to north. HiRes models indicate this pattern to continue
into early next week. General cloudiness has set in at all area
terminals. Before the warm front moves through the terminals, clouds
will be high enough for VFR conditions; however, as the warm front
moves north across the region, ceilings will drop to MVFR levels
and, during particularly heavy rain showers, IFR can occur. The warm
front will move through the whole region by midday tomorrow. Toward
the end of the TAF period, a cold front will move in bringing more
rain and higher winds.

.MARINE...Winds and seas will gradually rise into tomorrow. Another
low pressure system is approaching the region. As a result, the
winds have turned southerly as the warm front associated with the
low moves through. Then a cold front associated with the low will
move through and increase the southerly winds and seas to small
craft criteria by Sunday. There is a potential for gale force gusts
Monday afternoon and evening and potentially into Tuesday as well.
Higher winds and seas are expected into the middle of next week. A
long period W swell will settle into a mid-period swell by early
next week.

.HYDROLOGY...Rivers will begin a rising trend this weekend as
subtropical moisture returns amongst increasing rainfall and some
snow melt contribution. Sharper rises into minor flood stage can
be expected Monday through Tuesday as another atmospheric river
and area of low pressure impact the region. The russian River at
Hopland, Navarro and The Eel River at Fernbridge are currently
forecast to reach Minor Flood Stage on Tuesday.
Areal flooding is a bit more tricky with the snowpack. The deep
snowpack will likely absorb most of the rain and limit runoff at
the higher elevations. The lower elevations will likely see minor
flooding in low lying areas. This Will be most pronounced in Del
Norte county where they have close to a 4 foot deep snowpack as
low as 2000 feet. Farther south a snowpack this deep will likely
be higher up. The threat is still expected to be limited, but more
flooding is possible. A flood watch may be needed for portions of
Mendocino and Lake counties. MKK
