.SYNOPSIS...Low elevation snow will continue this evening into early
Friday morning with the heaviest snow shifting south and east. Very
cold temperatures will build in behind the snow with record breaking
lows likely along the coast Friday and Saturday. Another round of
heavy snow and cold is on tap next week.

.DISCUSSION...A deep trough dipping over northwest california has
brought very cold air to the region. At 500 mb, temperatures have
neared 40 degrees below zero. Cold air aloft has helped bring
continuous pockets of instability onshore, generating showery
precipitation. Snow has fallen as low as sea level today. Snow of 1
to 4 inches has been reported all the Humboldt and Del Norte Coasts.
Just a thousand feet up, accumulations have exceeded 10 inches with
nearly 2 feet at Berry Summit.
Showers are expected to tapper off this evening with an additional 1
inch of snow and graupel along the coast and up to another 4 to 10
inches on the high elevation ridges of eastern Humboldt. Heading
into early Friday morning, the focus of snow will quickly shift east
and south. The high elevations of Highway 101 in Mendocino County
can expect another 8 to 12 inches overnight. By morning, an inch of
snow is even possible in Ukiah. Similarly, the upper elevations of
Lake County could see 8 to 12 inches like around Cobb with 1 to 4
inches possible around the shores of Clear Lake itself. Eastern
Trinity County is actually likely to get snow last with up to 12
inches expected near Buckhorn Summit early Friday morning and 2 to 5
inches at lower elevations along the Trinity Valley.
As snow moves east of the area Friday, record breaking cold
temperatures will arrive, especially along the coast. NBM shows a 90
percent chance temperatures below 28 degrees along the coast Friday
and Saturday mornings. The record temperature for Eureka of 29 and 30
respectively are likely to be easily broken. Ironically, both of
these records were just set in 2022. Interior areas can expect
temperatures falling into the low 20s and upper teens. Otherwise,
relatively calm and clear weather is on tap this weekend.
Looking a little further out, another deep, cold trough is expected
to drop over the area early next week. This will likely bring
another round of showery precipitation. Currently, 500mb
temperatures are several degrees warmer than the current event, with
NBM generating snow levels around 1000 feet at the lowest. This will
restrict winter impacts at the coast to periods of thunder and
accumulating small hail. Upper elevations, however, could see another
1 to feet of snow. While the coast will stay warmer, this event will
likely be cold enough to bring Heavy snow along interior valleys,
especially the Trinity River Valley. Another round of bitter cold
weather is likely to follow snow mid next week. At least 80% of
cluster ensembles show some light ridging and calmer weather
returning to the area at least briefly late next week. /JHW

.AVIATION...Snow showers will continue to spread inland this
evening, with heavier snowfall rates causing vibility to drop to a
half mile at times. Later tonight, the heaviest snowfall activity
will become focused over Trinity, Mendocino, and Lake Counties. This
will cause flight conditions to improve at KACV and KCEC, while
lowered visibility and ceilings persist at KUKI due to snow. After
Friday morning, conditions will then improve at KUKI as a dry
airmass develops across the region.

.MARINE...Steep hazardous seas continue to subside across the
coastal waters this afternoon, and that trend will persist into the
evening. In addition, winds will generally be weak as an area of low
pressure moves south along the coast. Snow showers will occur with
the low pressure system tonight, and then gradually exit the region
during Friday. Otherwise, another round of gusty northwest winds is
forecast to occur on Sunday and Monday. Hazardous seas will also
build Monday into Tuesday.
