.SYNOPSIS...Periods of light rain will continue tonight into
early Tuesday, followed by a strong, very windy storm arriving
early Wednesday. More heavy rain, possible strong winds and
thunderstorms are expected to arrive later in the week.

.DISCUSSION...
An active weather pattern with multiple hazards and impacts are in
store for NW California this week. In the meantime, we are expecting
more non-impactful rain (hydrologically) tonight into Tue.
The shortwave trough will also generate some gusty winds (30-40
mph) over the higher terrain and over wind-prone coastal
headlands. 24hr rain amounts will generally be less than 0.10in
(or perhaps only sprinkles) tonight through Tue. Granted the
higher elevations in Del Norte and the King Range with favorable
orographic support will probably get 0.25in. Some drying is then
forecast in advance of a frontal wave later on Tue into Tue night.

A strong barrier jet is forecast develop in advance of a frontal
wave over the coastal waters Tue night. High resolution models,
particularly the ARW has 925mb wind speeds (roughly 1800-2000 feet
MSL) over 70kt, while surface winds hit 50kt by 12Z Wed. Thus
expected winds over the higher elevations and in wind channeled
(venturi-effect) terrain to gusts to 70 mph or more. Gusts in
populated centers probably will not be as strong, 50-60 mph, but
still plenty sufficient to bring down trees, blow down tree
branches and create power outages. For now will stay with the
existing wind advisories with the National Blend of Models (NBM)
24hr probabilities for max gusts over 46kts around 32% for wind
prone headlands such as Pt St George and under 10% for lower
elevations around Humboldt Bay. 24 hour probabilities for over 65
mph are over 80% for the lost coast and King Range.

Now when will the "real" rain hit. Heavy rain rates appear to
hold off until Wednesday with frontal passage. Both the NAEFS and
ENS mean integrated water vapor transport (IVT's) exceed the 90th
climatological percentile for about 12-18 hours on Wed. NBM 24hr
probabilities for over 1 inch in 24 hours (more likely in 12
hours) increase to 70-80% for southern Humboldt and much of
coastal Mendocino and northwestern Mendocino. Due to the
progression of the front and short duration (less than 12 hours)
of heavy rain, flooding concerns are not elevated at this point.
There will certainly be minor flooding of low lying areas with
poor drainage. Streams, creeks and rivers will also likely have
sharp rises. This will need to be monitored for possible nuisance
advisory type flooding. Right now, none of the main stem rivers
are forecast to reach even monitor or action stage with this first
round of heavy rain on Wed.

The convective threat does not appear all the formidable with
this frontal passage. There does appear to be some instability
over the coastal waters and nearby the coast with some
topographic enhancement after frontal passage. The SREF calibrated
thunderstorm guidance (based the cloud physics thunder parameter)
does show a 5-10% chance over land areas, mainly along the coast
and a narrow ribbon over the southeast portion of the area
(southern Lake county). This narrow line appears to be associated
with the surface frontal boundary. None of the deterministic
model soundings indicate favorable thermodynamic profiles for
thunderstorms. The most probable period appears to be late Wed or
Wed night near the coast and over the coastal waters.

The least exciting part of the this storm will be the high snow
levels. Impacts will be confined to the higher elevations above
about 4000-4500 feet in Trinity County, Scott Mtn Pass where
accumulations may be sufficient to warrant a winter weather
advisory. It has been a low snow winter so far.

The other concern going into mid week, particularly Wed evening
through Thu evening will be the arrival of 20+ ft long period
west-northwest swell and 30 foot surf. A high surf warning will
likely be forthcoming in the next 12 to 24 hours. The large
westerly swell, southerly winds and large high tides may combine
to yield inundation of normally dry coastal areas (coastal
flooding). This will need further evaluation over the next day or
two for possible issuance of a coastal flood watch.

Precipitation probabilities and amounts will diminish on Thu as a
weak ridging builds in advance of the next frontal system. High
surf and coastal flood concerns will still persist on Thu,
however. The next frontal system with precipitable water in excess
of 200% of normal will progress across the areas Friday into
Friday night. Probabilities for an inch or more of rain will
increase. Some of the area with topographic enhancement, S and SW
facing slopes, will probably receive over 2 inches. Once again
snow levels appear to remain high and the thirst for snow will
persist even for high elevations like Scott Mountain Pass. Strong
winds sufficient to bring down trees and tear branches off trees
will again be a hazard (Thu night and Fri). Even the NBM v4.2 is
starting to pick up on that signal. Both the GFS and ECMWF have
925mb winds ramping up to 50kt or more offshore over the waters.
This is another good indicator for strong and possibly damaging
winds. Higher elevations and wind prone coastal headlands will no
doubt rip, however impacts in population centers (Humboldt Bay and
vicinity) are still vague and uncertain.

Additional storms will certainly be possible for the weekend into
early next week, however the the flow becomes more chaotic with
large discrepancies between the various ensemble systems and the
deterministic models. The next storm could end up heading
southward or take a track right toward NW California. National
Blend of Models appears to be the best option at this point with
mid range precipitation probabilities (50%) with low impact precip
amounts. Granted this could change and we may be in store for yet
a third storm next weekend or early next week.

.AVIATION...VFR-MVFR Cigs and mostly meager rain amounts were the
result of a passing warm front that brushed across the North
Coast this morning. Before 18z, both CEC and ACV were reporting
predominately mid-high clouds; around noonday, Vis Satellite
indicated lower clouds advecting into Del Norte and Humboldt. Haze
was reported at the coast. Ahead of an approaching cold front
this evening, wind data is indicating increasing surface winds,
and model data is showing probable LLWS that started by late
morning. The front will usher in more rain and lower Cig/Vis. UKI
reported LIFR conditions this morning due to southerly moisture
advection. Similar conditions expected Tuesday morning. /TA

.MARINE...A series of long period swells will increase wind speeds
and wave heights this week. Small craft advisory currently increases
to gale warnings by Tuesday night into Wednesday, with potential for
storms level winds in northern outer waters. Then combined seas of
18 to 25 can be expected Wednesday night into Thursday and more gale
force wind potential toward Friday will keep the marine forecast
active. A high surf advisory for Thursday looks consistently likely.
